Prevalence of Metagonimus Metacercariae in Sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, from Eastern and Southern Coastal Areas in Korea

  • The present study was performed to determine the current infecion status of Metagonimus yokogawai metacercariae in sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, collected from several streams in eastern and southern coastal areas of Korea. The sweetfish collected were artificially digested with pepsin-HCI solution and examined under a stereomicroscope in August and September, 2007. Out of 145 sweetfish collected from 10 streams in eastern coasts (Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do), 88 (60.7%) were infected with Metagonimus metacercariae. The average metacercarial density was 61 per infected fish. Among 141 sweetfish collected from 10 streams in southern coasts (Gyeongsangnam-do, Ulsan Metropolitan city, and Jeollanam-do), 140 (99.3%) were infected with Metagonimus metacercariae, and their average density was 949 per infected fish. The present study confirmed that M. yokogawai metacercariae are still prevalent in the sweetfish from several eastern and southern coastal localities. The prevalence and metacercarial density were much higher in the sweetfish from streams of southern coasts than in those of eastern coasts. Therefore, attention should be paid to this small fluke infection, and consumption of raw sweetfish naturally produced in these areas should be prohibited.

동해안에서 자생하는 거머리말속 (Zostera Zosteraceae) 식물의 분포와 생육지 환경 (Distribution of Zostera (Zosteraceae) ana Habitat Characteristics in the Eastern Coastal Waters of Korea)

  • 한국산 거머리말속 중 동해 연안에 자생하는 식물의 분포와 생육지 환경의 특성을 파악하기 위해 1998년 6월부터 2000년 7월까지 중부 동해안의 화진포에서부터 남부 동해안 대변까지 조사하였다. 동해 연안에 자생하는 거머리말속은 거머리말, 왕거머리말과 포기거머리말 3종이 조사되었다. 거머리말 생육지는 기수호, 항과만의 수심 $1.3{\~}5.6 m$의 sand와 muddy sand 퇴적 환경에서, 왕거머리말은 수심 $8.5{\~}15.0 m$의 개방된 연안의 sand 퇴적 환경에서 출현하였다. 포기거머리말은 덕산항과 대변항에서 그 생육지가 처음 보고되었으며, 거머리말보다 깊은 지역에서 함께 생육하였다. 거머리말속의 식물 형태는 영양지와 생식지로 구분되었으며, 거머리말 영양지의 길이는 일산의 66.8cm에서부터 감포항의 110.0cm까지, 생식지의 길이는 화진포의 128.0cm에서부터 감포항의 277.8cm까지 생육 지역과 수심에 따라 다양하게 출현하였다. 왕거머리말은 영양지와 생식지가 $64.0{\~}75.7 cm$ 범위로 새로운 표현형으로 생육지의 수심에 영향을 받는 것으로 판단된다. 포기거머리말은 영양지와 생식지가 64.9{\~}70.3 cm$로 생식지가 좀더 길게 성장하였다. 영양염의 농도는 동해 남부 지역이 중부 지역보다 높게 나타났다. 동해안에서 자생하는 거머리말속 식물의 분포는 퇴적 환경보다는 종에 따라 생육 장소(만, 항구와 개방 연안 등)와 수심에 영향을 받고, 수심과 같은 생육 환경의 차이는 식물체의 형태 변이에 영향을 미치는 것으로 조사되었다.

Tropical Night (Nocturnal Thermal High) in the Mountainous Coastal City

  • The investigation of driving mechanism for the formation of tropical night in the coastal region, defined as persistent high air temperature over than 25$^{\circ}C$ at night was carried out from August 14 through 15, 1995. Convective boundary layer (CBL) of a 1 km depth with big turbulent vertical diffusion coefficients is developed over the ground surface of the inland basin in the west of the mountain and near the top of the mountain, while a depth of thermal internal boundary layer (TIBL) like CBL shrunken by relatively cool sea breeze starting at 100 km off the eastern sea is less than 150 m from the coast along the eastern slope of the mountain. The TIBL extends up to the height of 1500 m parallel to upslope wind combined with valley wind and easterly sea breeze from the sea. As sensible heat flux convergences between the surface and lower atmosphere both at the top of mountain and the inland coast are much greater than on the coastal sea, sensible heat flux should be accumulated inside both the TIBL and the CBL near the mountain top and then, accumulated sensible heat flux under the influence of sea breeze circulation combined with easterly sea breeze from sea to inland and uplifted valley wind from inland to the mountain top returning down toward the eastern coastal sea surface should be transported into the coast, resulting in high air temperatures near the coastal inland. Under nighttime cooling of ground surface after sunset, mountain wind causes the daytime existed westerly wind to be an intensified westerly downslope wind and land breeze further induces it to be strong offshore wind. No sensible heat flux divergence or very small flux divergence occurs in the coast, but the flux divergences are much greater on the top of the mountain and along its eastern slope than on the coastal inland and sea surfaces. Thus, less cooling down of the coastal surface than the mountain surface and sensible heat transfer from warm pool over the coast into the coastal surface produce nocturnal high air temperature on the coastal inland surfaces, which is not much changed from daytime ones, resulting in the persistence of tropical night (nocturnal thermal high) until the early in the morning.

Seasonal Characteristics of Phytoplankton Dynamics and Environmental Factors in the Coast of Mara-do and U-do, Jeju Island, Korea

  • A study on seasonal characteristics of phytoplankton dynamics and environmental factors was carried out at four stations including Mara-do and U-do located in the western and eastern coast of Jeju Island in southern Korea from April 2003 to March 2004. Out of 101 phytoplankton species identified, 84 belong to Bacillariophyceae, 9 Dinophyceae, 6 phytoflagellates and 2 coccolithophorids, and the highest value of species diversity was observed in April. Phytoplankton was more abundant at the western coast than at the eastern coast from March to September and its highest abundance was 49.24 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cells L$^{-1}$ at Mara-do in July. The pennate diatoms were more abundant at the western coast than at the eastern coast with the highest abundance of 38.75 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cells L$^{-1}$ at Mara-do in July, and during this period Nitzschia longissima contributed 68.5% of the total phytoplankton abundance. Naviculaceae was more abundant at Gosan (western coast) in November when Stauroneis membranacea represented 80.1% of the abundance. Leptocylindrus dances contributed 49.4% of the abundance at U-do in November. Dinophyceae was more abundant at U-do in August. Water temperature and pH fluctuated from 11.7${^{\circ}C}$ to 27.1${^{\circ}C}$ and from 7.31 to 8.70, respectively. Water temperature of Mara-do was about 1-2${^{\circ}C}$ higher than the other stations. Salinity varied from 30.4 to 35.0 psu with the minimum in rainy season and the maximum at the end of winter. The concentration of NH$_4$-N, NO$_3$-N, NO$_2$-N, PO$_4$-P and SiO$_2$-Si ranged 0.07-6.79, 1.0-62.0, 1.0-8.0, 1.0-7.0 and 7.0-191.0 $\mu$g-at L$^{-1}$, respectively. Chlorophyll a concentrations varied from 0.10 to 1.17 $\mu$g L$^{-1}$. NH$_4$-N concentrations were high at U-do from May to December, and at Mara-do from January to February. The high concentrations of NO$_3$-N were found at Mara-do from June to September and at U-do from January to May. The effects of various physicochemical parameters on the seasonal distribution and succession of phytoplankton population suggest that there is a classical pattern of phytoplankton dynamics in Jeju coastal waters.

영남지방 지역 및 지대별 담배거세미나방과 파밤나방 성충의 발생소장 (Seasonal Occurrence of Tobacco Cutworm, Spodoptera litura Fabricius and Beet Armyworm, Spodoptera exigua Hübner Using Sex Pheromone Traps at Different Locations and Regions in Yeongnam District)

  • 영남지방의 지역 및 기후지대별 담배거세미나방과 파밤나방의 발생소장을 각각의 성페로몬을 이용하여 조사하였다. 경람지역에서 담배거세미나방은 3월 중하순부터 11월 중하순까지 발생하였다. 경북지역에서 담배거세미나방은 4월 중하순부터 11월 상중순까지 발생하였으나, 울진에선 5월 하순부터 10월 하순까지 발생하였다. 기후지대별 담배거세미나방의 발생최성기는 남부해안지대에서 9월 중순, 내륙지대 및 분지지대에서 8월 하순, 내륙산간지대에서 8월 중순, 그리고 동해안중부지대에서 9월 상순이었다. 담배거세미나방의 지역별 발생비율은 경남의 경우 진주에서 20.0%로 가장 높았으며, 창녕에서 8.6%로 가장 낮았고, 경북의 경우 성주에서 3.3%로 가장 높았으며, 울진에서 0.8%로 가장 낮았다. 기후지대별 발생비율은 내륙지대에서 43.7%로 가장 높았으며, 다음은 남부해안지대에서 36.3%, 분지지대에서 8.4%, 내륙산간지대에서 7.0%이었고, 동해안중부지대에서 4.6%로 가장 낮았다. 한편, 파밤나방은 경북의 동해안중부지대를 제외하곤 3월 상순부터 11월 중순까지 발생하였다. 포항, 영덕 및 울진의 동해안중부지대에서 파밤나방은 대체로 4월 중순부터 11월 중순까지 발생하였다. 기후지 대별 파밤나방의 발생최성기는 내륙지대, 분지지대 및 내륙산간지대에서 8월 상순, 남부해안지대 및 동해안중부지대에서 8월 하순이었다. 파밤나방의 지역별 발생비율은 경남의 경우 창녕에서 1.6%로 가장 높았으며, 부산에서 0.4%로 가장 낮았고, 경북의 경우 성주에서 37.2%로 가장 높았으며, 울진에서 2.7%로 가장 낮았다. 기후지대별 발생비율은 분지지대에서 약 54.3%로 가장 많았으며, 다음은 내륙산간지대에서 29.9%, 동해안중부지대에서 9.3%, 내륙지대에서 3.9%이었고, 남부해안지대에서 2.6%로 가장 낮았다. 따라서 담배거세미나방은 경남지방에서, 파밤나방은 경북지방에서 다발생 되었고, 기후지대별 담배거세미나방의 발생량은 경남의 내륙지대, 파밤나방의 발생량은 경북의 분지지대에서 가장 많았다. 영남지방에서 담배거세미나방의 발생량은 파밤나방보다 2.4배 많았으나, 최초 발생시기와 발생최성기는 담배거세 미나방보다 파밤나방이 약간 빨랐다.

우리나라 연안역의 기후특성 및 해안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Climatic Characteristics of Korean Coastal Area and Marine Casualties)

  • By use of the Climatological Report(1982~1991) and the Marine Casualty Report(1982`1992), marine casualties caused by meteorological factors and climatic characteristics along Korean coast were analysed. Marine casualty by meteorological factors can be classified into three kinds such as collision, aground and sinking. On the whole collision was mainly caused by dense fog and heavy precipitation, and aground and sinking was caused by strong wind and high sea. As results of analysis of the distribution of wind, fog and precipitation at major ports in Korea, climatic characteristics along Korean coast are as follows. in the eastern coast, wind was relatively weak and fog was not so frequently formed, while strong wind blew all the year round and fog appeared from April to August in Ulleung Island. In the southern coast, the wind was strong in both winter and summer, fog formed frequently in late spring through mid-summer and heavy precipitation was in summer. Typhoon affecting Korea was usually passing this area to the East Sea. In the western coast, strong wind was prevailing in winter at southern region and fog was formed very frequently throughout the year.

조선시대(朝鮮時代) 자고(煮?) 생산과정(生産過程) - 동해안(東海岸)(영해(寧海))을 중심(中心)으로 - (Salt Production on the Young-Hea of Eastern Coast in Yi-dynasty)

  • In order to survey the traditional salt production at the eastern coast, Young-Hae, in Yi-dynasty, data of salt production were collected through interviewing with whom had received the skill from ancestors and analyzed the data. The results obtained were as follows. Salt-producer take the salt water containing much salt and then he transported the salt-water by having water buckets an back in with using the water-toting device (Mul ji ge). Finally he carried out the irrigation (Mul dae gi) to a ditch (Dorang). It is noteworthy that the East-sea salt production method was not selecting a method of salt-pond style with a bank for salt production but using the salt water transportation fashion without a bank for that. Judging from these facts, we could conclude that traditional salt production method was handed down into the Yi-dynasty from ancient times.

On The Seasonal Variations Of Surface Current In The Eastern Sea Of Korea (August 1979 - April 1980)

  • The seasonal variations of surface current patterns in the Japan Sea were drawn out from the results of drift bottle experiments, current measurements and hydrographic observations during 1979∼1980. The North Korean Cold Current(NKCC) and the East Korean Warm Current(EKWC) were common features of circulation in the eastern sea of Korea. The intrusion of NKCC along the Korean coast became strong in summer(average velocity of 47.4cm/sec off Jumunjin and 23.4cm/sec near Jugbyeon) when the Tsushima Current was strong. But there was no indication of the NKCC in November 1979. Dynamic topography(August & November 1979) and satellite picture(November 1979) seemed to show the topographic steering of EKWC beginning off Janggigab. Drift bottles arrived at the Japaness coast were affected significantly by the strong Tsushima Current in summer and by the predominant northwesterlies in winter instead of weak current.

Mysidacea (Crustacea) from the Sandy Beaches of the Eastern Coast of Korea with Four New Records in the Korean Waters

  • The present study reports mysids on sandy beaches along the eastern coast of Korea. Samples were collected with a dip net or a sled net in sandy shores in April 1995 and November 2006. 9 species representing five genera were identified from the present study. Of these, the genus Nipponomysis including N. lingvura, N. ornata, and N. imparis, and Acanthomysis nakazatoi were newly recorded from the Korean waters. Morphological descriptions and taxonomic key to species were given. The present study reports that 45 species belonging to 15 genera from the Korean waters have been recorded.

  • Algal vegetation in the subtidal zone between a small rock output and the Juckdo Island, eastern coast of Korea was investigated at several selected sites. The objectives of the survey were to descirbe the poorly known macroalgae community in this area and correlate the pattern of distribution as well as the change of zonatin with the environmental conditions. The water movement, light intensity and theinclinatin of substrate are considered as the environmental parameters. The upper and mid subtidal zones in sheltered area with less steep rocky surface are dominated by large brown algae Srgassum confusum; in the exposed area are characterised by species of Costaria costata. In the lower subtidal zone, the difference of vegetaton between the sheltered and the exposed areas is not recognized. At this depth the light intensity is an important ecological factor. Six narrow algal zones occur in the sheltered area, whereas two broad belts occur in the exposed area. the biomass value is 4 times greater in the sheltered area than in the exposed area.
