This study aims to classify climate zones for extreme climate indices over the Republic of Korea. First, frequencies and magitudes of extreme high temperature, spatial distributions for extreme low temperature, and extreme precipitation are analysed. Frequencies of summer days in inland region show more than coastal region. In frequencies of frost days, the characteristics of altitude and longitude are appeared. Heavy precipitation days show many frequencies in the southern coastal region and Jeju island, but little in Gyeongsangbuk-do region. The classification of climate zone for extreme climate indices by principal component analysis and cluster analysis is conducted for the first half, second half of study period, and climatology period for 1981-2010. Summer days are classified according to latitude. In case of frost days, the eastern and the southern coastal region and Jeju island are classified as same region. Heavy precipitation days are classified according to longitude in south region of Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do. This study will help to prepare adaptation and mitigation system for climate change in wide range of fields.

Yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata tagged with a Pop-up Satellite Archival Tag (PSAT) was released off the coast of near the Moseulpo, Jeju Island and the ecological data during about 40 days was obtained. However, it is difficult to determine the spatial location of underwater ecological data. To improve the accuracy of estimating the Yellowtail migration route using temperature, suitable background field of the oceanic environment data was evaluated and used for input data. After developing of the tracking algorithm for migration route estimation, three experiment cases were estimated with ecological data among the surface layer, the mixed layer, and the whole water column. All tracking experiments move from western to eastern Jeju Island. Additionally, tracking experiment using 3D ocean numerical model reveal that it is possible to estimate the migration route using the fish ecological data of the entire water column. Therefore, using a large number of ecological data and a high-accuracy ocean numerical model to estimate the migration route seems to be a way to increase the accuracy of the tracking experiment. Moreover, the tracking algorithm of this study can be applied to small pelagic fishery using small archival electronic tags to track the migration route.
This study is to evaluate the prior economic feasibility of the off-shore fisheries stock enhancement project. The main findings of this study can be summarized as follows: first, offshore fisheries stock enhancement project shall be implemented by dividing them into 1st·2nd·3rd projects for efficient promotion. The 1st·2nd·3rd projects will be conducted in a total of 50 locations (the eastern sea, the western sea, the southern sea, and the jeju sea areas), and the project period per unit will be five years, which will cost 1 trillion won. Second, according to the results of the survey on public awareness, the most consumed marine species in Korea over the past year were analyzed in the order of mackerel, hairtail, squid, yellow corvina, blue crab, and cod. The dominant response to the reason for consuming marine products in Korea was healthy well-being food and safe food. In addition, 67.9% of them have hesitated to purchase offshore fish species over the past year due to high prices, indicating that they are burdened by high prices. On the other hand, 79% of the respondents said that the government's policy was insufficient, according to a survey on whether the government's coastal marine resource creation policy was sufficient. Third, as a result of preliminary economic analysis of offshore fisheries stock enhancement project, the benefit-cost ratio is 4.01, net present price is 1,283.7 billion won, and internal rate of return is 91.7% per year, which means that the economic analysis ensures the feasibility of the projects. The results of this study provide useful information on securing or organizing budgets for offshore fisheries stock enhancement project by securing economic feasibility as a national infrastructure project that increases fishery income and public benefits such as consumption of marine products.

Distribution characteristics of phytoplankton community were investigated by HPLC and flow cytometry in Jeju Strait and the Northern East China Sea (NECS) in May 2004, in order to understand the relationship between physical environmental factors and distribution pattern of phytoplankton communities. Based on temperature and salinity data, three distinct water masses were identified; warm and saline Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), which is flowing from northwest of Jeju Island, warm and low saline water at the center of Jeju Strait, which is originated from China Coastal Water (CCW) and relatively cold and high saline water originated from Yellow Sea at the bottom of the Jeju Strait. At Jeju Strait, less saline water (<33 psu) of 15 km width occupied surface layer up to 20 m which located at 20 km offshore and strong thermal front between warm and saline water and cold and less saline water was found in the middle of the Jeju Strait. Vertical transect of temperature and salinity at the NECS also showed that low saline (<33 psu) water occupied the upper 20 m layer and cold and saline water was present at the eastern part. Chl a was measured as $0.06{\sim}3.07\;{\mu}g/L$. Spring bloom of phytoplankton was recognized by the high concentrations of Chl a at the low saline water masses influenced by the CCW and subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer appeared between $20{\sim}30\;m$ depth, which was at thermocline depth or below. Abundances of Synechococcus and picoeukaryote were $0.2{\sim}9.5{\times}10^4\;cells/mL$ and $0.43{\sim}4.3{\times}10^4\;cells/mL$, respectively. Dinoflagellate, diatom and prymnesiophyte were major groups and minor groups were chlorophyte+prasinophyte, chrysophyte, cryptophyte and cyanophyte. Especially high abundance of dinoflagellate was identified by high concentration (>1\;{\mu}g/L$) of peridinin at the bottom of the thermocline, which showed an outbreak of red tide by high density of dinoflagellates. Abundances of picoeukaryote in Jeju Strait were about $5{\sim}10$ times higher than abundance measured in Kuroshio water and showed a good correlation with Chl b (Pras+Viola), which implies the most of population of picoeukaryote was composed of prasinophytes. Prochlorococcus was not detected at all, which suggests that Kuroshio Current did not directly influenced on the study area. Based on the strong negative correlations between biomass of phytoplankton (Chl a) and temperature+salinity, the primary production and biomass of phytoplankton in the study area were controlled by the nutrients supply from CCW.
In summer season of 1998, a huge flood occurred around the Yangtze River in the eastern China. The low salinity water less than 28 psu from the river was detected around the southeastern part of the Jeju Island which is located in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. We studied how to detect low salinity water from the Yangtze River, which gives terrible damages to the Korean fisheries. We got the relationships between low surface salinity, turbid water from the Yangtze River and digital ocean color using remote sensing of SeaWiFS satellite in the northern East China Sea in summer seanson of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The charts of salinity in the northern East China Sea were made by the regenerating of the satellite ocean color data with the formula from the relationships between low salinity, in situ turbid water (transparency) and satellite ocean color.
Frontal areas between warm and saline waters of the Kuroshio currents and colder and diluted waters of the East China Sea (ECS) influenced by the Changjiang River were identified from the satellite thermal imagery and hydrological data obtained from the Coastal Ocean Process Experiment (COPEX) cruise during the period between March $1^{st}$ and $10^{th}$, 1997. High chlorophyll concentrations appeared in the fronts of the East China Seas with the highest chlorophyll-a concentration in the southwestern area of Jeju Island (${\sim}2.9\;mg/m^3$) and the eastern area of the Changjiang River Mouth (${\sim}2.8\;mg/m^3$). Vertical structures of temperature, salinity and density were similar, showing the fronts between ECS and Kuroshio waters. The water column was well mixed in the shelf waters and was stratified around the fronts. It is inferred that the optimal condition for light utilization and nutrients induced both from the coastal and deep waters enhances the high phytoplankton productivity in the fronts of the ECS. In addition, the high chlorophyll-a in the fronts seems to have been associated with the water column stability as well.
This study uses mesoscale model WRF to investigate characteristics of wind fields in South Korea, a region with a complex terrain. Hourly wind fields were simulated for one year representing mean characteristics of an 11-year period from year 1998 to year 2008. The simulations were performed on a nested grid from 27 km down to 1 km horizontal resolution. Seasonal variation of wind speed indicates that wind is strongest during the spring and winter seasons. Spatial distribution of mean wind speed shows wind energy potential at its peak in mountainous region of Gangwon-do, the east coast, and Jeju Island. Wind speed peaks at night in mountainous and eastern coastal regions, and in the afternoon inland and in the southwestern coastal region. The simulated wind map was verified with four upper-air sounding observations. Wind speed was shown to have a more pronounced overestimation tendency relative to observation in the winter rather than summer. The results of this wind mapping study help identify locations with the highest wind energy potential in South Korea.
In the summer of 1998-2001, a huge flood occurred in the Yangtze River in the eastern China. Low salinity water less than 28 psu from the river was detected around the southwestern part of the Jeju Island, which is located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. We studied how to detect low salinity water from the Yangtze River, that cause a terrible damage to the Korean fisheries. We established a relationships between low salinity at surface, turbid water from the Yangtze River and digital ocean color remotely sensed data of SeaWiFS sensor in the northern East China Sea, in the summer of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. The salinity charts of the northern East China Sea were created by regeneration of the satellite ocean color data using the empirical formula from the relationships between in situ low salinity, in situ measured turbid water with transparency and SeaWiFS ocean color data (normalized water leaving radiance of 490 nm/555 nm).
The main objective of this study is to predict the wind power generation at the wind farm using various wake models. Modeling of wind farm is a prerequisite for prediction of annual energy production at the wind farm. In this study, we modeled 20 MW class Seongsan wind farm which has 10 wind turbines located at the eastern part of Jeju Island. WindSim based on the computational fluid dynamics was adopted for the estimation of power generation. The power curve and thrust coefficient with meteorology file were prepared for wind farm modelling. The meteorology file was produced based on the measured data of the Korea Wind Atlas provided by Korea Institute of Energy Research. Three types of wake models such as Jensen, Larsen, and Ishihara et al. wake models were applied to investigate the wake effects. From the result, Jensen and Ishihara wake models show nearly the same value of power generation whereas the Larsen wake model shows the largest value. New positions of wind turbines are proposed to reduce the wake loss, and to increase the annual energy production of the wind farm.
Colonies of three independent gametophytes (one that is filamentous and two that are ribbon-like) without sporophytes occur in Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Jeju-do, Korea. They have a moss-like appearance at first sight, with tiny plantlets and gemmae, and grow in cool, shaded, relatively deep dint places of large rocks, such as the small caves in high mountains, close to valleys. The gametophytes were identified based on morphological and molecular data by chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequence data (rbcL, rps4 gene and rps4-trnS intergenic spacer). Here, rbcL, rps4 gene and rps4-trnS intergenic spacer data of one independent gametophyte distributed in Korea have the same morphology, DNA sequence and monophyletic group as Crepidomanes intricatum from the eastern United States. They also share the same cpDNA data with Crepidomanes schmidtianum recently reported from Korea. The other independent gametophyte should be Hymenophyllum wrightii based on cpDNA data. The last one was presumed to be Pleurosoriopsis makinoi based on molecular data. The taxonomic status was confirmed to be the forma of Hymenophyllum wrightii through a revision of Hymenophyllum wrightii f. serratum based on molecular data.
