  • Purpose: This study examines the factors influencing the body image of Korean children with type-I diabetes. Methods: The data were collected from 65 children (ages 9-15) who attended a DM management camp in 2004. Nine items from Offer's Self-Image Questionnaire (OSIQ-revised), which was modified and standardized to the Korean population by Hong, Kim, and Shin, were used to measure the self body image. Descriptive and correlational analyses were performed by using SPSS 13.0. Results: Although not statistically significant, children's self body image decreased as they became older. The body image and age were found to be significantly correlated. Conclusions: The results suggest the need for an effective intervention program to improve the self body image among children with type-I diabetes. In this regard, nursing intervention or educational programs may be beneficial for inducing positive self body image.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with childhood obesity. Methods: In this descriptive study, the number of participants was 78 4-6th grade students in a primary school, and the subjects were overweight or obese. Data were collected for 10 days from June 1 to 10 in 2009. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-test, $X^2$-test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: Mother's occupation is a statistically significant factor in a bivariate analysis. In multiple logistic regression analysis, the statistically significant factors were mother's occupation (OR=0.17, 95% CI=0.04-0.70) and dietary attitudes (OR=0.08, 95% CI=0.01-0.66). Conclusion: For an effective obesity management program in childhood, it is necessary to consider a mother occupation and dietary attitudes.

Methods: A Q methodology was used to analyze the subjectivity of relapse experiences among 55 participants with alcohol use disorder. Fifty-five Q-statement were derived from interviews and literature review. Q-statements were classified into normally distributed shapes using a 9-point scale. Data were analyzed using the QUANL program. Results: Four types of relapse experiences were identified: failure to self-regulation drinking cravings, fear of relapse and awareness of the need for treatment, drinking as a coping mechanism and defensive coping, and lack of motivation to change drinking behavior. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that patients with alcohol use disorder need a differential approach based on four types of relapse experiences in the recovery process.

  • Purpose: This study aims to provide basic data for the development of measures and promoting home health nursing by examining the current status and trends in home health nursing for long-term care (LTC) insurance beneficiaries. Methods: Secondary data, including annual LTC insurance statistics reports for 2010-2017 and LTC manpower data, were used to compute current status and trends in the provision of home health nursing. Results: Beneficiaries of home health nursing under LTC insurance, insurance-covered costs for home health nursing, home health nursing provider, and home health nursing providing institution only accounted for 3% of all insurance-covered home care services, and were on a consistent decline since 2010. In particular, vulnerable rural regions with high proportion of individuals had poor infrastructure in terms of home health nursing institutions and manpower, but had a higher home health nursing utilization rate compared to urban regions. Conclusion: In addition to measures to support home health nursing service beneficiaries, policy measures are needed to support home health nursing service personnel and institutions. Furthermore, programs to cultivate the expertise of home health nurses and improve quality of home health nursing services should be developed in order to promote home health nursing utilization in vulnerable rural regions.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the correlations between transitional shock, incivility and nursing professionalism among nursing students. Methods: A total of 143 nursing students completed transitional shock, incivility and nursing professionalism, using structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using the t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The results showed that nursing professionalism was significantly correlated with gender (β=.20, p=.001), major satisfaction (β=.44, p=.007), clinical practice satisfaction (β=.45, p<.001), transitional shock (β=-.20, p=.012), and incivility experienced (β=-.18, p=.021) among nursing students. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a plan for reducing individual satisfaction with clinical practice and the transitional shock of nursing students. It ultimately may increase nursing students' nursing professionalism. In addition, a strategy is needed to reduce incivility among nursing students by creating positive educational environment in clinical practice through cooperation between schools and training institutions, and to strengthen desirable nursing professionalism.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of Environmental Enrichment (EE) on improvement of motor function in animal models of Parkinson's Disease. Methods: Male C57BL6 mice weighing 25-30 g, at the age of 12 wks were used in this study. The animals were injected MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridin, 20 mg/kg in saline, i.p.) 4 times a day at every 2 hr, and raised in EE cage for 14 days. On day 14, after behavior test, all mice were sacrificed for immunohistochemistry. All values were expressed as means$\pm$S.E.M. Statistical significance was evaluated using a one way ANOVA followed by Sheffe test. Results: There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the behavior test. Also EE significantly reduced of TH positive cell loss in Substantia nigra pars compacta as compared to the result of MPTP treatment. Conclusion: Based on these findings, it is reasonable to assume that the environmental enrichment prevents dopaminergic neuronal loss and improves disarrangement of motor function and behavioral disability induced by MPTP.

  • This study was directed at analysing nursing practice in one oriental medicine hospital. In this study, the nurses were chosen from two units at one oriental medicine hospital. Using the worksampling method, a total of 780 series of nursing actions were collected over thirteen days. this study had two findings. First, the percentage for the amount of actual nursing practice was 79.5% which is lower than the amount of actual nursing practice in other western style general hospitals. Second, the content of nursing practice included nursing actions(43.8%), nursing management (35.5%), and education /research (0.1%), indicating that only the special care of oriental nursing and education /research were not observed in nursing practice. These findings indicate a deficit knowledge in oriental medicine and oriental nursing care by nurses in oriental medicine hospitals. Since Oriental Nursing has not been included in Nursing curriculum, there is a need for research to develop basic education in Oriental Medicine and pharmacology as well as the development of a sgstematized approach to Oriental Nursing so as to provide an appropriate background for nurses working in this field. Further research is needed to define nursing in the Oriental Medicine system.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the importance and usability of the curriculum of the oriental nursing educational program among clinical nurses who completed the program. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional descriptive survey design. Data were collected from March 1, 2010 to April 25, 2010 from 68 oriental or allied hospital nurses who completed the oriental nursing educational program. A70-item questionnaire of importance and usability of the program curriculum and as an instrument of knowledge of oriental nursing were used. Data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. Results: The majority of participants (69.1%) experienced difficulties in clinical practice due to lack of oriental nursing knowledge and skill. In knowledge of oriental nursing, meridian points had the most negative responses (51.5%), followed by oriental documentation (42.7%) and oriental herbal medicine (20.6%). The highest ranked course in importance was oriental fundamental nursing with clinical practicum in usability. The scores of usability items were significantly lower than those of importance items. Conclusion: This study suggests that the clinical job description and role of oriental nurses should be organized. The oriental nursing educational program needs to include more unique clinical nursing content.
