However, the traditional lecture style of training delivery may not be desirably effective. Purpose: This study investigated the effects of a communication training program utilizing a small group dynamic on the communication competency and human relationships in nursing college students. Methods: One hundred twenty six freshmen in a university in Seoul participated in this study. The instruments of communication competency (Primary Communication Inventory) and human relationships (Relationship Change Scale) were used at the beginning and conclusion of the training period. Eighty-three students from two nursing classes were assigned to the experimental groups and 43 students from other classes were assigned to the control groups. Each of the 11 small groups was composed of 7 or 8 students. The weekly program that ran during the 2007 fall semester from October 1st to December 11th consisted of effective communication strategies including therapeutic communication skills, Johari's window, empathy, active listening, and transactional analysis. Results: The experimental group of students reported significantly greater improvement in communication competencies, specific nonverbal competencies, and human relationships compared with the control group. Specifically, the experimental students demonstrated greater improvement in nonverbal communication competencies and satisfaction, communication, and awareness of human relationships. Conclusions: Small group based communication training can be an effective alternative method of communication education for college nursing students.

Methods : The participants were 185 WM students, 123 KM students, and 230 nursing students belonging to two universities (P and D) in Busan metropolitan city, Korea. Data were collected with self-administered questionnaires and analyzed with descriptive statistics, $X^2$ test, t-test and ANOVA with SPSS win 14.0. Results : Of 538 participants, overall 87.1% has heard EWCMP. Preferred type of EWCMP was significantly different by participants' backgrounds. WM students preferred (western) medical treatment with minor supportive Korean medical care(85.5%). However, KM students emphasized EWCMP with the same weight in both medical and Korean medical treatment(59.0%), and nursing students were in between two schools. Intention to recommend EWCMP for the consumer was 67.4%, and also showed very different between WM students and others, 37.3% of WM students, 89.4% of KM students, and 83.9% of nursing students. WM students showed more negative opinion on the EWCMP than KM and nursing students, Conclusions : The attitude of WM, KM, and nursing school students toward EWCMP was very similar to that of WM doctors, KM doctors, and nurses, respectively. WM students showed big difference in the overall attitude toward EWCMP from that of KM and nursing students. It is recommended to introduce the joint curriculum or exchange programs between WM and KM schools.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of team-based simulation training (TBST) on patient safety confidence and nursing competency among nursing students. Methods: This study used a one group pretest-posttest design. Among the senior nursing students enrolled in an academic course in one nursing school, the convenience sample of 114 students was recruited. Participants received 15-session TBST (2 hours per session) over 8 weeks and completed the patient safety confidence and nursing competency scales, and a questionnaire of participants' responses to TBST. Data were analyzed using a descriptive statistics test, a paired t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: The results of this study showed that patient safety confidence and nursing competency significantly improved after TBST and there was a positive correlation between these variables. Conclusion: The findings indicate that TBST is effective for improving nursing students' patient safety confidence and nursing competency, and thus, team-based strategies can be useful to attain the goals of nursing education. Furthermore, the results of this study suggest further research to refine the relations between patient safety and nursing competency.

The experimental group received the nursing intervention of auricular acupressure. Results: There were significant differences in postpartum depression and fatigue between the two groups. The participants in the experimental group showed significantly decreased scores of postpartum depression (z=-2.51, p=.012) and fatigue (t=5.36, p<.001). Conclusion: The nursing intervention programs using the auricular acupressure is effective in reducing depression and fatigue of early postpartum mothers.
