  • In this study a lab scale seismic test method which is able to evaluate seismic resistant performance of the fire protecting components in case of earthquake was developed. This seismic test consists of equivalent accelerating and temporary accelerating. The former is to search for resonance frequency and the latter is to simulate vibrating by earthquake with intensive magnitude. The frequency and displacement accelerated to the components was decided by maximum acceleration of gravity, and whether or not they could maintain function was tried to be confirmed. This test method is expected as an effective one for evaluating seismic resistant performance for the fire protecting components.

  • This study explores the lateral deflections of diagonal braces in concentrically-braced earthquake-resisting frames. The performance of this widely-used system is often compromised by the flexural buckling of slender braces in compression. In addition to reducing the compressive resistance, buckling may also cause these members to undergo sizeable lateral deflections which could damage surrounding structural components. Different approaches have been used in the past to predict the mid-length lateral deflections of cyclically loaded steel braces based on their theoretical deformed geometry or by using experimental data. Expressions have been proposed relating the mid-length lateral deflection to the axial displacement ductility of the member. Recent experiments were conducted on hollow and concrete-filled circular hollow section (CHS) braces of different lengths under cyclic loading. Very slender, concrete-filled tubular braces exhibited a highly ductile response, undergoing large axial displacements prior to failure. The presence of concrete infill did not influence the magnitude of lateral deflection in relation to the axial displacement, but did increase the number of cycles endured and the maximum axial displacement achieved. The corresponding lateral deflections exceeded the deflections observed in the majority of the previous experiments that were considered. Consequently, predictive expressions from previous research did not accurately predict the mid-height lateral deflections of these CHS members. Mid-length lateral deflections were found to be influenced by the member non-dimensional slenderness (${\bar{\lambda}}$) and hence a new expression was proposed for the lateral deflection in terms of member slenderness and axial displacement ductility.

  • This is study to estimate the pump induced vibration in time and frequency domain by frequency response function between two points in case of 20Hp and 50Hp centrifugal pumps. The frequency response function has real and imaginary information of signals, and response function has also real and imaginary information. So the vibration force can be obtained from the response function and frequency response function by complex calculation. And it is compared with the theoretically estimated values and it is suggested that the amplitude of vibration with main frequency is about 10~25% of pump and motor weight, and the magnitude of unbalanced mass is about 30~60% of pump and motor weight to estimated vibration force in time domain. There are the other kinds of vibration components with different frequency values of 2~3 times of its main frequency, and these kinds of information are used to control the tuning ratio between operating frequency of pump and structural frequency of concrete slab.

  • Observations of the damages to high-rise reinforced concrete (RC) wall building structures caused by by recent earthquakes in Chile ($M_w$ 8.8, February 2010) and New Zealand (February 2011, $M_L$ 6.3) have generally exceeded expectations. Firstly, this study estimated the seismic damage levels of 15-story RC box-type wall building structures using the analytical models calibrated by the results of a shaking table test on a 1:5 scale 10-story RC box-type wall building model. Then, the seismic fragility analysis of the prototype model was conducted by using the SAC/FEMA method and the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). To compensate for the uncertainties and variability of ground motion and its impacts on the prototype model, in the SAC/FEMA method, a total of 61 ground motion records were selected from 20 earthquakes, with a magnitude ranging from 5.9 to 8.8 and an epicentral distance ranging from 5 to 105km. In the IDA, a total of 11 ground motion records were used based on the uniform hazard response spectrum representing a return period of 2,475 years. As a result, the probabilities that the limits of the serviceability, damage control, and collapse prevention would be exceeded were as follows: from the SAC/FEMA method: 79%, 0.3%, and 0%, respectively; and from the IDA: 57%, 1.7%, and 0%, respectively.

  • A self-centering energy-dissipative(SCED) bracing system has recently been developed as a new seismic force resistant bracing system. The advantage of the SCED brace system is that, unlike other comparable advanced bracing systems that dissipate energy such as the buckling restrained brace(BRB) system, it has a self-centering capability that reduces or eliminates residual building deformations after major seismic events. In order to investigate the effects of torsion on the SCED brace and BRB systems, nonlinear time history analyses were used to compare the responses of 3D model structures with three different amounts of frame eccentricity. The results of the analysis showed that the interstory drifts of SCED braced frames are more uniform than those of BRB frames, without regard to irregularity. The residual drift and residual rotation responses tended to decrease as irregularity increased. For medium-rise structures, the drift concentration factors(DCFs) for SCED systems were lower than those for BRB frames. This means that SCED-braced frames deform in a more uniform manner with respect to building height. The effect of the torsional irregularity on the magnitude of the DCFs was small.

  • Recently, the frequency and magnitude of the earthquake have increased. The structural safety of the public facilities such as bridges and tunnels etc. which were not concerned for earthquake resistant design are increased. Fiber reinforcement polymer that has been frequently studied for seismic retrofit has advantage as seismic reinforcement material, but it has disadvantage of the brittleness. Therefore, the investigation of safety and seismic reinforcement are required. In this study, new FRP-ductile material layered composites proposed to seismic performance reinforced of subway tunnel. Tensile test of FRP-ductile material layered composites showed that Maximum tensile force of FRP-ductile using Aluminum is similar to existing FRP reinforcement material and maximum strain was increased. In case of application of domestic subway tunnel which need ductility, layered composites of FRP-Aluminum is estimated effectively for increase of seismic performance.

  • The local earthquake data, observed by Wiechert seismograph in Korea during Feb. 1926-May 1943, was provided and investigated. Using S-P monogram of JMA, mainly Tsuboi's formula and additional intensity data, the earthquake parameters are obtained as much as possible within a reasonable discrepancy. The seismic characteristics as to the epicenter distribution was discussed under the viewpoint of its relation to the adjacent geologic structure. Some statistical results are analyzed comparing with Kyushu region which provide a reasonable interpretation on the seismicity of Korea. By superposing the available information of the individual events, the general trend of stress field was found to be east-west compression, which mostly agree with that of the southwestern Japan.

  • Liquefaction-induced sand boils were observed during the Pohang earthquake (Moment magnitude, 5.4) on November 15, 2017, specifically in the region of agricultural fields and park areas near the epicenter. This was recorded as the first observed liquefaction phenomenon in Korea. This paper analyzes liquefaction potentials at the key sites at Pohang area. The simplified methods and current design standard were used to evaluate the occurrence of liquefaction. The seismic demand was estimated based on the NGA-WEST2 ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs). The liquefaction resistance of the ground was determined using the in-situ tests: standard penetration test (SPT) and cone penetration test (CPT). The liquefaction potentials were quantified by liquefaction potential index (LPI), which were compared with those from the previous studies.

  • The evaluation of the loss-of-support conditions of frictional beam-to-column connections using simplified numerical models describing the transverse response of a portal-like structure is presented in this paper considering the effects of the seismic-hazard disaggregation. Real earthquake time histories selected from European Strong-motion Database (ESD) are used to show the effects of the seismic-hazard disaggregation on the beam loss-of-support conditions. Seismic events are classified according to different values of magnitudes, epicentral distances and soil conditions (stiff or soft soil) highlighting the importance of considering the characteristics of the seismic input in the assessment of the loss-of-support conditions of frictional beam-to-column connections. A rigid and an elastic model of a frame of a precast industrial building (2-DoF portal-like model) are presented and adopted to find the minimum required friction coefficient to avoid sliding. Then, the mean value of the minimum required friction coefficient with an epicentral distance bin of 10 km is calculated and fitted with a linear function depending on the logarithm of the epicentral distance. A complete parametric analysis varying the horizontal and vertical period of vibration of the structure is performed. Results show that the loss-of-support condition is strongly influenced by magnitude, epicentral distance and soil conditions determining the frequency content of the earthquake time histories and the correlation between the maxima of the horizontal and vertical components. Moreover, as expected, dynamic characteristics of the structure have also a strong influence. Finally, the effect of the column nonlinear behavior (i.e. formation of plastic hinges at the base) is analyzed showing that the connection and the column are a series system where the maximum force is limited by the element having the minimum strength. Two different longitudinal reinforcement ratios are analyzed demonstrating that the column strength variation changes the system response.

  • When a certain magnitude earthquake occurs, serious damage for human and properties is a major concern for most of the subway stations which were not applied for earthquake resistant design. Consideration and experimental verification for ground and structural behavior based on soil-structure interaction relation are required to evaluate seismic performance of the subway station as embedded structures. For 1/60 scaled subway station model, centrifuge modeling shaking table test is performed using Kobe and Northridge earthquakes. Compare to displacements and moments of the underground and structure obtained by soil response analysis and response displacement method based on experimental results, this paper shows how to evaluate seismic performance of subway station.
