  • We focused on improvement in simulation of wind fields for the complex coastal area. Local Analysis and Prediction System(LAPS) was used as a data assimilation method to improve initial conditions. Case studies of different LAPS inputs were performed to compare improvement of wind fields. Five cases have been employed : I) non data assimilation, II) all available data, III) AWS, buoy, QuikSCAT, IV) AWS, buoy, wind profiler, V) AWS, buoy, AMEDAS. Data assimilation can supplement insufficiency of the mesoscale model which does not represent detailed terrain effect and small scale atmospheric flow fields. Result assimilated all available data showed a good agreement to the observations rather than other cases and estimated veil the local meteorological characteristics including sea breeze and up-slope winds. Result using wind profiler data was the next best thing. This implies that data assimilation with many high-resolution sounding data could contribute to the improvements of good initial condition in the complex coastal area. As a result, these indicated that effective data assimilation process and application of the selective LAPS inputs played an important role in simulating wind fields accurately in a complex area.

  • The previous studies for dynamic behavior of spatial structure have been zoomed in on roof structure by numerical analytic method. But the roof structure of real spatial structures is supported by lower structure as column and wall. So, when earthquake is occurred, it is predicted that dynamic behavior of roof structure is affected by lower structure. Therefore, on this study, natural period characteristics of arch structures are analyzed according to section, length and the modulus of elasticity of brass column and polycarbonate column and additional mass of roof structure by the scale-down model of arch structure as the most simple structure of spatial structures. The changes of natural periods are generally alike. But, when Polycarbonate column is connected to roof structure, the change of natural period for change of section is relatively large. That means that change of section and section and length of column and additional mass of roof structure have less influence on change of stiffness because the modulus of elasticity of brass is relatively large.

  • A methodology for the seismic vulnerability assessment of historical monuments is presented in this paper. The ongoing work has been conducted in Tunisia within the framework of the FP6 European Union project (WIND-CHIME) on the use of appropriate modern seismic protective systems in the conservation of Mediterranean historical buildings in earthquake-prone areas. The case study is the five-century-old Zaouia of Sidi Kassem Djilizi, located downtown Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Ambient vibration tests were conducted on the case study using a number of force-balance accelerometers placed at selected locations. The Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) technique was applied to extract the dynamic characteristics of the monument. A 3-D finite element model was developed and updated to obtain reasonable correlation between experimental and numerical modal properties. The set of parameters selected for the updating consists of the modulus of elasticity in each wall element of the finite element model. Seismic vulnerability assessment of the case study was carried out via three-dimensional time-history dynamic analyses of the structure. Dynamic stresses were computed and damage was evaluated according to a masonry specific plane failure criterion. Statistics on the occurrence, location and type of failure provide a general view for the probable damage level and mode. Results indicate a high vulnerability that confirms the need for intervention and retrofit.

  • A new type of pure torsional yielding damper made from steel pipe is proposed and introduced. The damper uses a special mechanism to apply force and therefore applies pure torsion in the damper. Uniform distribution of the shear stress caused by pure torsion resulting in widespread yielding along pipe and consequently dissipating a large amount of energy. The behavior of the damper is investigated analytically and the governing relations are derived. To examine the performance of the proposed damper, four types of the damper are experimentally tested. The results of the tests show the behavior of the system as stable and satisfactory. The behavior characteristics include initial stiffness, yielding load, yielding deformation, and dissipated energy in a cycle of hysteretic behavior. The tests results were compared with the numerical analysis and the derived analytical relations outputs. The comparison shows an acceptable and precise approximation by the analytical outputs for estimation of the proposed damper behavior. Therefore, the relations may be applied to design the braced frame system equipped by the pure torsional yielding damper. An analytical model based on analytical relationships was developed and verified. This model can be used to simulate cyclic behavior of the proposed damper in the dynamic analysis of the structures equipped with the proposed damper. A numerical study was conducted on the performance of an assumed frame with/without proposed damper. Dynamic analysis of the assumed frames for seven earthquake records demonstrate that, equipping moment-resisting frames with the proposed dampers decreases the maximum story drift of these frames with an average reduction of about 50%.

  • P wave traveltime delays has been measured and a preliminary tomouaphic inversion has been performed using the data collected from the network deployed by Korea National University of Education in the southcentral part Korea. The maximum variation in relative traveltime residuals is almost 0.7 seconds. A large azimuthal variation in traveltime residuals is observed at the stations in the northwestern part of the study area. This might indicate the existence of lateral velocity heterogeneity beneath the study area. Although, the inverted tomographic image seems to be correlated with the tectonic boundary between Kyunggi Massif and Okcheon Belt, the confidence level is presently low. We should place on the importance of this study for finding preferable inversion parameters and predicting probable result. Better tomographic image of the study area can be obtained in the near future when the data are accumulated.

  • Landslides generally occur due to influences of the internal and external factors. Internal factors include ground characteristics, terrain and so on. External factors can also be divided into natural factors such as rainfall, ground water, earthquake and so on, and artificial factors resulting from cutting and embankments. Among these factors, rainfall becomes the most important external factors by means of which landslides occur in Korea. To appropriately deal with tile effects of pore water pressures due to rainfall, the method using the pore water pressure ratio(r$\_$u/) is generally applied in slope stability analysis or the design of slope reinforcements. Since tire value of r,, is in general not constant over the whole cross section, in most slope stability analyses the average values are used with little loss in accuracy. However, determination of the average values of r$\_$u/ to applied in the design is difficult problem. Therefore, in this study, tile average values of r$\_$u/ according to the intensity of rainfall and slope inclination is suggested based on results of the small scaled model tests using the artificial rainfall apparatus. It is found from the model tests that the average values of r$\_$u/ is about 0.07∼0.18(in case of the intensity of rainfall is 50mm/hr.), about 0.10∼0.28(in case of the intensity of rainfall is 100mm/hr.), and about 0.10∼0.33(in case of the intensity of rainfall is 150mm/hr.).

  • In this paper the dynamic behavior of an isolated building subjected to idealized near-fault pulses is investigated. The building is represented with a simple 2-DOF model. Both linear and non-linear behavior of the isolation system is considered. Using dimensional analysis, in conjunction with closed form mathematical idealized pulses, appropriate dimensionless parameters are defined and self-similar curves are plotted on dimensionless graphs, based on which various conclusions are reached. In the linear case, the role of viscous damping is examined in detail and the existence of an optimum value of damping along with its significant variation with the number of half-cycles is shown. In the nonlinear case, where the behavior of the building depends on the amplitude of the excitation, the benefits of dimensional analysis are evident since the influence of the dimensionless 𝚷-terms is easily examined. Special consideration is given to the normalized strength of the non-linear isolation system that appears to play a complex role which greatly affects the response of the 2-DOF. In the last part of the paper, a comparison of the responses to idealized pulses between a linear fixed-base SDOF and the respective isolated 2-DOF with both linear and non-linear damping is conducted and it is shown that, under certain values of the superstructure and isolation system characteristics, the use of an isolation system can amplify both the normalized acceleration and displacement of the superstructure.

  • 3D time history analysis was performed on vertical shaft-tunnel connection to provide insight into the dynamic stress-strain behavior of the connection considering the effects of soil layers, periodic characteristics and wave direction of earthquakes. MIDAS GTS NX based on FEM (Finite Element Method) was used for this study. From this study, it is revealed that the maximum displacement occurred at the upper part of the connection when the long period seismic waves propagate through the tunnel direction in soft ground. Also, stress concentration occurs due to different behaviors of vertical shaft and tunnel, and the stress concentration could be influence for safety on the connection. The results of this study could be useful for the seismic performance design of vertical shaft-tunnel connection.

  • Recently, studies of vibration control performance improvement of tall buildings connected by a sky-bridge have been conducted. In this study, the effect of difference of natural vibration periods of two buildings and install location of a sky-bridge on vibration control performance has been investigated. To this end, 40-story and 50-story building structures were selected as example structures. Analytical models were developed by varying the natural period difference ratio from 1.0 to 1.5. Artificial earthquake load based on KBC2009 was used as an excitation for time history analyses. Based on numerical simulation results, it has been shown that control performance for displacement and velocity of tall buildings connected by a sky-bridge is improved as the difference of natural periods of two buildings increases and the linked story becomes higher. However, in the case of acceleration response, it shows a counter trend compared to displacement and velocity responses.

  • In the case of power plant facilities, seismic stability of non-structural elements is important. In particular, Cabinet structures to which electrical equipment is attached, should have functional safety against earthquakes. Therefore, in this study the dynamic characteristics of non-structural elements inside existing power plant buildings were identified and the response level generated during dynamic behavior was analyzed. In addition, The steel plate dampers were adopted and adjusted to suit the size of the target equipment. In order to derive the optimal seismic reinforcement, the variables according to the attachment location were set and the responses were analyzed by the seismic movement input before and after reinforcement.
