A long-term resistivity monitoring system has been developed for saturated cores in room temperature and humidity condition. A 3-channel water-pump continuously drops the water onto the top of saturated core sample surrounded by shrinkable tube as well as on the paper filters of the electrodes at both sides of the core sample, by which one can monitor the resistivity changes with maintaining full saturation of the rock core for a week or longer. Monitoring the resistivity changes has been performed with 3 kinds of rock samples including biotite gneiss, andesitic tuff, and shale for 9 days using the system. Consequently, it is proposed two hypothesis that conversion speed of temperature coefficient has close relation to the thermal properties of the rock sample and that the ratio of resistance between dry and saturated conditions for a rock sample can be related to the effective porosity of the sample. The ratio between dry and saturated resistance for the three rock types are 48, 705, and 2, while effective porosity was 3.7%, 3.3%, and 13.0%, respectively.
In order to obtain the geological information of the shallow subsurface and the characteristics of resistivity curves to the lateral extent of the gold bearing gravel layer underlaid by a thick layer, electrical resistivity surveys had been carried out in the northern area of Takaoi village, Kalimantan, Indonesia from September 30th to October 27th in 1999. The Dipole-Dipole (Dp-Dp) resistivity survey was carried out with a electrode spacing of A=3m, 5m and electrode separation index n=10, and the vertical electrical sounding (VES) of the Schlumberger type was performed at 6 sites. The interpretation of the Dp-Dp data and VES curves by computer modeling indicates 5 classified layers as the horizontal structure. And the characteristics of VES curves shows us KH type.
A new approach of estimating the coefficient of permeability (COP) from resistivity has been developed, which can provide another good application tool of geophysical methods to geo-technical field. Borehole electrical logging and Lugeon test results in Yangsan area showed that resistivity is inversely proportional to the COP. For granite and andesite in Yansan area, the relation between the resistivity ($\rho$) and the COP (k) revealed that, $log(k){\approx}-0.85621\;log({\rho})+0.0031$. Derived relation is applied to AMT data acquired from a survey line along the tunnel. Two-dimensional resistivity distribution from AMT data was converted to two-dimensional COP section. The final COP section can be used as good input data for groundwater modeling.
Due to the recent development of instruments which enabled the measurements of subtle IP effect in the ground and analysis algorithms, complex resistivity (CR) method was expanding its application to various field. In this study, we applied the CR method to the test site where the ground reinforcement had been done by injecting the cement mortar for investigating the effect of ground reinforcement. For this site, resistivity monitoring and tomography survey was carried out while the ground reinforcement had been made by the grouting. From the result, the anomalous region that was shown on the result of resistivity 4D monitoring was coincident with those of phase section in the CR method, because the cement grouting material had the strong IP effects. It might be expected that the CR method should be very powerful surveying tool for the similar purpose.
Low resistivity zone is observed at the lower part of a CFRD (Concrete Face Rockfill Dam). Generally, CFRD tends not to have any saturated zone within the body, but the result of resistivity survey shows that it is possible for the dam to be saturated under 20m depth with water. The level of reservoir was under 10 m from the crest. We suspect that this result may come from the wrong 2D inversion process ignoring the 3D geometry of dams. For the analysis of possibility of distortion by different geometry, we perform the 3D forward modeling for the dam and apply the 2D inversion process. And then we check the point of traditional interpretation of resistivity data. By the analysis, it is found that the result of 2D inversion process of 3D geometry of dams, seems to have deep relation with the reservoir level, and the complex 3D structure hide some internal electrical anomaly of dams from resistivity information.
Electrical resistivity surveys were conducted in the areas between Buji-ri and Seoak-dong, and between Nawon-ri and Yangdong-ri, Kyongju in order to investigate the geoelectric structure of the nothren part of the Yangsan Fault. In the area between Buji-ri and Seoak-dong south of Kyongju, the fracture zone east of the inferred fault develops more deeply, without significant north-south variation in depth, than west. In the area between Nawon-ri and Yangdong-ri north of Kyongju, the fault zone seems to be developed along the Hyungsan-river, and the resistivity structure west of the river is more affected by the fracture zone than east. Interpreted section of dipole-dipole survey conducted in Homyung-ri shows vertical contact of the Yangsan Fault. It appears that the boundary between the northern and central segment of the Yangsan Fault is located in the north of study areas since there is no significant variation in electrical resistivity structure near Kyongju.
Designing the bridge with wider span is the present-day trends. Therefore, constructing the foundation on the suitable ground is one of the important factor for the safety of bridge. But, getting a subsurface information under the river is not easy problem. This paper shows results of electrical resistivity survey at the river. Electrical resistivity survey have revealed geoelectrical structure successfully. The result is well matched with boring and can provide useful information on the geological structure such as fault fracture zone for suitable location of foundation. It is expected that application of electrical resistivity survey at the river will be helpful in preventing modification of design due to unexpected ground condition during the construction, or water contamination and increment of costs accompanied with ground reinforcement.

The small loop electromagnetic (EM) method is a fast and convenient geophysical tool which can provide resistivity distribution of shallow subsurface. Especially, it can be a useful alternative of resistivity method in a very conductive environment such as a reclaimed saline land. We applied the multi-frequency small loop EM method for the site investigation of reclaimed saline land. We inverted the measured EM data using one dimensional (1D) inversion program and merged to obtain three dimensional (3D) resistivity distribution over the survey area. Finally, comparing he EM results with the drill log and measured soil resistivity sampled at 16 drill holes, we can define the site character such as thickness of landfill, salinity distribution, and etc.
This study evaluates the usefulness and capability of surface electrical resistivity technique for identifying the weak zones or subsurface cavities in karst area with limestone formation. Weak zones or cavities near surface can be potentially dangerous and several problems are associated with collapse of roads or buildings accompanied by subsidence phenomena. In this paper, both two and three dimensional resistivity investigation were conducted to investigate subsidence along a road in Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun, South Korea. The results of the resistivity survey using dipole-dipole array provide a clear view of the weathered regolith, the distribution of weak zones or cavities and bedrock. Several low resistivity areas were identified and subsequent drilling led to the discovery of several weak zone or clay-filled underground cavities. The drilling results show excellent correlation with the resistivity images. It is illustrated, the ability of electrical technique to produce high resolution images of subsurface, which are useful for subsidence assessment. Also the results of this study have demonstrated that two and three dimensional electrical resistivity surveys are useful for delineating the subsidence area. Based on resistivity imaging, the map of hazardous zone has been developed.
Many trials to set up the correlation between the rock mass classification and the earth resistivity have been carried out to design tunnel support type based on the interpreted electrical resistivity acquired by surface electrical survey. But it is hard to find reports on the comparison of the real rock support type determined during the excavation with the electrical resistivity by the inversion of the survey data acquired before the tunneling. In this study, the rock mass classification based on the face mapping data and the resistivity inversion data are investigated to see if it is possible to design reliably the rock support type based on the surface electrical survey. To get the quantitative correlation, rock engineering indices such as RCR(rock condition rating), N(Rock mass number), Q-system and RMR(rock mass rating) are calculated. Since resistivity data has low resolution, Kriging method as a post processing technique which minimizes the estimated variance is used to improve resolution. The result of correlation analysis shows that the 2D electrical resistivity survey is appropriate to see the general trend of the geology in the sense of rock type, though there might be some local area where these two factors do not coincide. But the correlation between the result of 3D survey and the rock mass classification turns out to be very high, and then 3D electrical resistivity survey can make it possible to set up more reliable rock support type.
