  • In this study, the Singal fault zone in the Gyeonggi massif is identified in the Kiheung area. Geotechnical investigations were carried out to locate and characterize of the Singal fault zone in the Kiheung reservoir area. The N-S striking Shingal fault is known to be a Riedel-type strike-slip fault within the Choogaryung rift. Along the fault zone, 62 bore holes were drilled and electrical resistivity survey of about 11km, and vibroseis seismic refraction and reflection survey of about 500m were done. From the result of investigations, it is found that the fault zone, consisting mainly of gouge and breccia, has maximum width of 300 meters with anastomosing geometry of secondary fractures developed subparallel to the fault zone. We interpret these geometric features to be the result of structural development of flower-structure type at the restraining band of strike-slip fault. However, there are uncertainties of this interpretation because there are virtually no outcrops in the area. Further investigation to understand geometric features and linkage style of the fault zone.

  • The earth leakage circuit-breakers installed to protect the human body against electrical shock have conventionally had a sensitivity current of 30 mA and an operating time of 30 ms or less. No reviews are found, however, on the operating time of the current conducting through the human body due to the electrical shock or ground fault. This paper measures the trip-operating time against the earth leakage under the condition of increased current as well as under the condition of rated sensitivity current of the earth leakage circuit-breakers. Further measurement with a prototype model showed an improved operating time of 16 ms or less under the condition of rated sensitivity current. It is expected that development of circuit-breakers with higher safety is possible if the performance of the electronic circuit can be improved.

  • Neighboring construction becomes mainstream of Ground excavation in downtown area. This causes the displacement, deformation, stress condition, etc of the ground surroundings. Therefore Neighboring construction have an effect on Neighboring structure. All these years a lot of Neighboring construction carried out, and the accumulation of technology also get accomplished. But earth retaining structure collapse happens yet. Types of earth retaining structure collapse are 12. 1. Failure of anchor or strut system, 2. Insufficiency of penetration, 3. H-pile Failure on excessive bending moment, 4. Slope sliding failure, 5. Excessive settlement of the back, 6. Deflection of H-pile, 7. Joint failure of coupled H-pile, 8. Rock failure when H-pile penetration is rock mass, 9. Plane arrangement of support systems are mechanically weak, 10. Boiling, 11. Heaving, 12. Over excavation. But field collapses are difficult for classification according to the type, because collapse process are complex with various types. When we consider the 12 collapse field, insufficient recognition of ground condition is 4 case. Thorough construction management prevents from fault construction. For limitations of soil survey, It is difficult to estimate ground condition exactly. Therefore, it should estimate the safety of earth retaining system, plan for necessary reinforcement, according to measurement and observation continuously.

  • Focal mechanisms were analyzed for the seven earthquakes which occurred in the southwestern part of the Korea Peninsula from 2001 to 2005. Grid searches are performed to fit distributions of P-wave first-motion polarities and SH/P amplitude ratios for each event. The focal mechanism solutions imply that most of the events have strike-slip sense including partially thrust component. The compressional axes of the solutions are predominantly ENE-WSW or NE-SW indirections. This result is similar to the directions of the principal compressional axes for major earthquakes occurred around the Korea Peninsula.

  • In electric power supply systems, an earthing system determines the electric potential of the conductors related to that of the Earth's surface. The choice of earthing system has implications for the safety of the power supply systems. There are considerably different regulations for earthing (grounding) systems in each country. A protective earth(PE) conductor ensures that all exposed conductive surfaces are at the same electric potential as the earth surface. This paper deals with that when PEN conductor of TN-C-S system is disconnected, dangerous touch voltage causes personnel body to be harmed and human being's property to be damaged seriously. For this reason, this paper explains how serious problems can occur when the fault current flows. As a consequence, we can understand how we can design earthing system properly to ensure the personnel safety against earth faults. The result shows the way that TN-C-S system can be applied safely in Korea.

  • In the present study, fault attitudes and the locations of appearance of faults in tunnel faces were predicted by analyzing the trajectory of the maximum longitudinal displacement immediately before the appearance of faults through three-dimensional finite element analysis. A total of 28 fault attitude models were used in the analysis. Those faults that have drives with dip appear first in the upper part of tunnel faces as tunnel excavation progresses and their maximum longitudinal displacement shows a tendency to move from the middle part to the upper part of tunnel faces. Those faults that have drives against dip appear first in the lower part of tunnel faces as tunnel excavation progresses and their maximum longitudinal displacement shows a tendency to move from the middle part or middle upper part to the lower part of tunnel faces. In addition, when the dip of faults is larger the maximum longitudinal displacement moves from the left upper part toward the wall part in the case of drive with dip models and from the left lower part toward the wall part in the case of drives against dip models. Therefore, it was indicated that the attitudes of faults distributed ahead of tunnel faces and the locations where faults appear in tunnel faces can be predicted by analyzing the longitudinal displacement trajectory of tunnel faces following excavation.

  • In this paper, we report new OSL ages of the marine terrace sediments at Suryum fault site, using single grains of quartz, and briefly discuss their chronological implications on the timing of terrace formation along the southeastern coast of Korea. Of 1200 grains measured, 93 quartz grains were found to have OSL properties suitable for dating, the equivalent dose ($D_e$) values of which varied significantly, ranging from 50 Gy to 610 Gy with the overdispersion of $30{\pm}4%$. Applied to the Central Age Model (CAM) and Minimum Age Model (MAM), these quartz grains showed the OSL ages of $83{\pm}4ka$ and $60^{+3}{_{-7}}ka$, respectively, both of which are stratigraphically inconsistent with the previously reported OSL ages of lower $2^{nd}$ terrace (MIS 5a; ~80 ka). However, Finite Mixture Model (FMM) revealed that a small fraction of the measured quartz grains ($6{\pm}4%$) were of the ages ($194{\pm}24ka$) corresponding to MIS 7. Conclusively, based on single grain OSL ages, it would be prudent not to exclude the possibility that the marine terrace sediments at Suryum fault site have formed during MIS 7. Further, our single grain OSL ages imply that multiple grain(single aliquot) OSL dating methods are not applicable to the marine sediments at Suryum fault site.

  • The study area is a tunnelling section passing through the Yangsan Fault zone. Kyungbu express highway and national road 35 are located above the tunnel. Previous study showed that fault gouge and fault breccia were widely distributed in the tunnelling section with a maximum width of 100 m. From the present study, it is found that sedimentary rocks consisting mainly of shale are distributed at the eastern block of the Yangsan Fault and these rocks are not subject to mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alteration. On the other hand, dacitic tuff distributed at the western block of the Yangsan Fault is largely affected by mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alteration. The large fault zone of $50{\sim}130m$ width was formed by complex processes of mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alterations such as chloritization, sericitization, and kaolinization. Based on the characteristics of mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alterations, the Yangsan fault zone in the study area is geotechnically classified as four zones: unaltered zone, altered zone, altered fractured zone, and fault gouge zone. These zones show different degrees and aspects in mechanical fracturing and hydrothermal alterations, resulting in different engineering properties.

  • A total of 469 granitic samples were collected from 44 sites in the Ulsan fault area, southeast Korea. According to the previous petrographic studies, the granitic rocks have been divided into four groups (Hornblende biotite granodiorite, Hornblende granite, Biotite granite and Alkali-feldspar granite). NRM intensities, values of low field magnetic susceptibility, and magnetic behaviors during stepwise demagnetization experiments suggest rather a three-fold classification: In this scheme, Hornblende granite and Biotite granite are grouped together, as they did not show any significant differences in magnetic characteristics. Based on the Ishihara (1979)'s criterion, Alkali-feldspar granite is classified as ilmenite-series granite, whereas others are classified as magnetite-series granite. In the eastern part of the study area including the Tertiary basin area, declinations of site-mean characteristic remanent magnetizations (ChRMs) show clockwise deflection of more than 30 from the reference direction of east Asia. Both along and in the adjacent region of the Ulsan fault-line, however, no deflection of remanent direction was observed. A boundary line between the deflected and undeflected site-mean ChRMs is defined in this study, which runs roughly parallel to the Ulsan fault-line at the distance of about 6km eastward from the fault-line. We suggest that this newly found boundary line, which we call Yonil tectonic line, released dextral simple shear stress acted in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula during the opening stage of the East Sea in the Early Cenozoic.

  • Fault-plane solutions of the December 13, 1996 Yeongweol earthquake with magnitude 4.5 is obtained using the grid test technique. Thirty polarities of P waves recorded at KMA, KIGAM, KSRS and JAPAN stations are used for the event. The obtained fault plane solution shows strike-slip motion with significant amount of thrust component. The orientation of the fault is 180±20° in strike, 50±5° in dip and 150±5° in rake, or 292±3° in strike, 65±5° in dip and 30±10° in rake. These solutions are similar to those of earthquakes occurred at Sagju (Jan. 7, 1980), Pohang (Apr. 15, 1981) and offshore Gunsan (Oct. 6, 1976). The compressional axis of the stress field is trending from ENE to WSW, which is consistent with the previously defined typical regional tectonic stress orientation in and around Korean Peninsula.
