The term "constructability" in regard to cast-in-place concrete construction refers mainly to the ease of reinforcing steel placement. Bar congestion complicates steel placement, hinders concrete placement and as a result leads to improper consolidation of concrete around bars affecting the integrity of the structure. In this paper, a multi-objective approach, based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is developed for optimal design of reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls, considering minimization of the economic cost and reinforcing bar congestion as the objective functions. The structural model to be optimized involves 35 design variables, which define the geometry, the type of concrete grades, and the reinforcement used. The seismic response of the retaining walls is investigated using the well-known Mononobe-Okabe analysis method to define the dynamic lateral earth pressure. The results obtained from numerical application of the proposed framework demonstrate its capabilities in solving the present multi-objective optimization problem.
In order to investigate the characteristics of gravity drainage for geotextile, small-scale model tests for the geotextile chimney drain of earth dam which is a typical type of gravity drainage were carried out using 15 kinds of nonwoven and composite geotextiles. According to the results of this study, the drainage discharge of geotexgile drain generally increases with exponential function as hydraulic head increases and the increasing rate is greater in the coarser soil of dam material. It has a trend to increase when the construction slope of geotextile drain is steeper and the number of layers of geotextile is more. The relationship between the transmissivity of geotextile and the drainage discharge has positive correlation and the rate of increase is greater in the coarser soil. The geotextile products must be carefully selected in consideration of transmissivity of geotextile when the soil to be drained is coarser and the seepage flow is relatively high. Most of staple fiber nonwoven geotextile used in this study are found to be appropriate for drainage purpose. Among them, the composite geotextile the type of which geotextile is evaluated to be the most excellent material. But the geotextile of low permeability such as filament thermal bonded and filament spunbonded nowovens closely examined their transmissivity especially to be used for drainage function.
The short circuit and overload is presented by main cause of electrical fire. However, 85% of the fan directly connected the outlet box without switch in total 110 fans as a research in manufacturing industries. In installation direction of vertical type fans which was placed on the horizontal surface, only 39 vertical type fans were placed on vertical surface and 71 fans were placed on the horizontal type. The installation direction of the fans warns of the risk of the fire hazard due to the motor stall to the user manual of the maker. However, it is the representative nonconformity example of construction which the people or builder disregards. In addition, the condition of ground connection with the earth leakage prevention was investigated in grounding of 5 fans, non-grounding of 105 fans. The double insulation structure is generally used for small fan and it can't connect ground wire as electric plug of non-grounding type. However, industrial iron fan needs ground wire for electric leakage and to protect against electric shock.

The aim of this study is to explore the meanings and significance of sense of place in environmental education. Sense of place is related to affective aspect of human, means emotional bonds to place where he live. In general sense, place is referred to a location on the earth but is not confined to physical settings or space. It is a construction reflecting human experiences and meanings and being center of meaningful experiences in everyday life. Recently there are many environmental educators emphasizing lived experience as a way to develop environmental sensitivity or intimacy toward nature. Environmental education should be practiced in the place where the participants live and reflect locality including social and cultural characteristics as well as natural features. In addition, it should provide opportunities for participants to have an lived experience where they can get the sense of bonds to place or connectedness. It is the significance that sense of place has. If you get sense of place, sense of bonds to place, you are likely to feel much more belongingness and attachment to place, which in turn become a basis for a variety of activities to conserve and improve the place and will develop an ecological self.
Regional cathodic protection has significant impact on pipeline integrity management. After risk analyses of a newly built gas distribution station constructed in an area with large dwelling density, risk score was high because of potential threat caused by galvanic corrosion. Except reinforced steel in concrete, there are four kinds of metal buried under earth: carbon steel, galvanized flat steel, zinc rod and graphite module. To protect buried pipeline from external corrosion, design and construction of regional cathodic protection was proposed. Current density was measured with potential using potential dynamic test and boundary element method (BEM) was used to calculate current requirement and optimize best anode placement during design. From our calculation on the potential, optimized conditions for this area were that an applied current was 3A and anode was placed at 40 meters deep from the soil surface. It results in potential range between $-1.128V_{CSE}$ and $-0.863V_{CSE}$, meeting the $-0.85V_{CSE}$ criterion and the $-1.2V_{CSE}$ criterion that no potential was more negative than $-1.2V_{CSE}$ to cause hydrogen evolution at defects in coating of the pipeline.
It is not easy to find a good soil condition due to the shortage of suitable land for construction work. The earth structure and buildings can be constructed over the soft soil. The soft soil must be treated either using the reinforcement element or dewatering. Most of land reclamation projects are being implemented along the south coast or west coast of the Korean Peninsula. The soils in these areas are covered with the soft marine clay, so soil and site improvement is the most important things to do. Pile foundation at the bottom of embankment can be constructed either in the soft ground or in the soil contaminated area. The purpose of this research is to develop "geogrid-reinforced piled embankment method" to prevent the differential settlement and increase the bearing capacity of soil. In this study, the effectiveness of the geogrid-reinforcement was studied by varying the space between piles and reinforcement conditions. Also, the geotechnical engineering properties of the embankment material and foundation soil were determined through the laboratory tests as well as the field tests. As a result, the site that the pile-spacing S = 3b with geogrid reinforcement is the most effective to reduce the differential settlement and increase load bearing capacity.
Excavation is an important work in mining, earth removal and general earthworks. Nowadays, automation in excavator has been studied by several researchers. In the excavator research methods, simulation is one of the low cost methods for applied to test safely. In this paper, designed a virtual hydraulic excavator that with the control and the dynamic. At first, the simulation of hydraulic system for excavator's attachment such as boom, arm and bucket using Matlab/Simhydraulic is presented. Second, the dynamic model of excavator is distributed to combine with the hydraulic system. For controlling this system, electric joysticks are used to operate the orifice open areas in Main Control Valve. The simulation result is described to analysis the performance of this virtual excavator.
Recently, as the environmental regulation for earth moving equipment has been tightened, advanced systems using electronic control have been introduced for energy savings. An IMV(Independent Metering Valve), which consists of four 2-way valves, is one of the electro-hydraulic control systems that provides more flexible controllability and potential for energy savings in excavators, when compared to the conventional 4-way spool valve system. To fully realize an IMV, a two-stage bi-directional flow control valve which can regulate the large amount of flow in both directions, should be developed in advance. A simple design that allows proportional flow control to apply the pilot pressure from the current-controlled solenoid to the spring loaded flow control spool and thus valve displacement, is proportional to the solenoid current. However, this open-loop type valve is vulnerable to flow force which directly affects the valve displacement. Force feedback servo of which the position loop is closed by the feedback spring which interconnects the solenoid valve and flow control spool, could compensate for the flow force. In this study, linearity for the solenoid current input and robustness against load pressure disturbance is investigated by linear analysis of the static nonlinear equations for the IMV proportional flow control valve with feedback spring. Gains of the linear system confirm the performance improvement with the feedback spring design.
