  • This paper describes field installation and load test results performed for three types of micropiles in the process of developing a new micropiling method. Field tests were performed for two conventional types(i.e., micropile reinforced with steel bar and gravity grouting, micropile reinforced with steel bar and steel casing and gravity grouting) and a proposed type(i.e., micropile reinforced with hollow steel pipe wrapped with geotextile-pack and pressurized grouting). The load test results subjected to axial compression and tension and lateral loading conditions are described in this paper. The micropiles were exposed in the air in order to verify the installation quality and curing condition of grouting material via ground excavation. Axial compression and tension test results indicate that the new micropile type provide at least 40% higher bearing capacity than that of conventional types. Based on the examination of exposed piles, it is induced that the proposed method, packed micropile, provides better interlocking between grouts and surrounding soils and increases higher frictional resistance comparing to conventional types.

  • A design method is presented for the earth-retaining structure ccnslructtd by a row of bored Piles, which has such merits as low-vibration and low-noire during construction. And utility of the design method is investigated by performing a design example. First, theoretical rquations to estimate the resisting force of a row of earth-retaining was in cohesive soils are estabilished for grounds above and below bottom of excavation, reprctively. The characteristics of soils and the effect pile's interval can be considered logically in the theoretical equations. Then, the method for stability.analysis is presented for the earth-retaining piles by applying the theoretical equation of resisting forces on a row of piles. Finally, the design of earth-retaining piles is performed within the ranges which can satisfy the stabilities of both piles and soils. On investigation cf the sail-stability, the stability for bottom heave In cohesive soils is also investigated.

  • Many countermeasures are presented to make excessive earth circumstance pollution better in the earth. A lot of researches are in progress to lessen $CO_2$ among the industries exhausting it. The industries manufacturing cement are making many countermeasures. Many concernments on ECO-friendly materials, rather than cement, are increased, and researches are in progress to develop them. Lime, material mostly used before Portland cement appeared, attracts the Occident as well as the Orient. In the Occident, lime mortar was used in common, for maintaining and repairing cultural properties, too. This study is aimed at offering basic materials for the modern use of lime, ECO-friendly material. This study measured the change of intensity and weight with lime, sand, and earth, basic materials of Samhoimool. As a result, at the beginning, hydrated lime displayed its density late, but as time was gone, density was promoted continuously. In addition, density was promoted, when it was given heat at the beginning. If heat-generation reaction of quicklime and water was used, density was promoted at the beginning, but liquidity showed a drop.

  • In former times, It is obvious that the earth retaining cantilever wall using stabilizing piles is definitely superior to the other methods due to economical efficiency and the efficiency of construction through model tests using a soil tank and practical application(Kim, 2006). However, this method was not proved in theoretical basis from the viewpoint of geotechnical engineering. Accordingly, a variety of model experiments in order to analyze the behavior of the earth retaining cantilever wall and stabilizing piles according to excavation step and earth pressure and stress acting on stabilizing piles according to excavation step were performed. On the basis of analyzing the result of model tests using a soil tank, this study suggests failure mechanism of clods and a method calculating virtual supported point. In addition, this study contributes to developing the analyzing method of retaining piles, stabilizing piles and beams connecting two piles and, this study helps this method to be established as a new design method through analyzing the results of model tests using a soil tank.

  • This study aims to develop the program for design of a reinforced earth retaining wall. For this purpose, the external stability such as overturning, sliding and bearing capacity and the internal stability such as pull-out failure and tensile rupture of the reinforced earth retaining wall with the reinforcement spacing and the backfill inclination were examined. In addition, the calculated results from the developed program were verified by comparing with the simulated results based on the three-dimensional finite element analysis. It is expected that this program contributes to effective design of the reinforced earth retaining wall.

  • Segmental Grid Retaining Wall is one of the segmental grid retaining walls using headers and stretchers to establish the framework of the wall In this method, grids formed by the intersection of headers and stretchers are generally filled with the gravel to maintain the weight of the wall Therefore, the construction can be carried out with higher speed and much economically when compared with the concrete retaining wall Furthermore, it has high drain capacity, and environmentally friendly aspects also have been pointed out because the possibility of the planting at the front of the wall However, in the segmental grid retaining wall method, the relative movement between the individual headers and stretchers was generally recognized, and stress redistribution in the gravel filling was also observed when subjected to the external loading and self-weight of filling Therefore, it has been thought that the distribution of the earth pressure in the segmental grid retaining wall system differ from that of the concrete retaining wall In this study, the surcharge tests using the scaled model segmental grid retaining wall was carried out to observe the distribution of the earth pressure in the segmental grid retaining wall The earth pressure was measured in the six specified height of wall, and the distribution of the pressure was analyzed. Furthermore, the earth pressure by computation or by the test using the concrete retaining wall was also considered to make comparison

  • The use of geosynthetics for the reinforced earth wall system has been increasing rapidly for a number of years. The connection strength between wall facing and geosynthetics should be evaluated in the design of geosynthetics. However, the connection strength is not often evaluate, exactly, and it causes problems such as deformation of the wall facing, local failure of the reinforced earth wall system, conservative design and so on. Therefore, the connection strength in the design of geosynthetics should be applied evaluation result by reasonable method. This study is evaluated connection strength using the typical design method, NCMA(1997) and FHWA(1996), in the field case. Then the results compared with the evaluation results of connection strength, which is suggested by Soong & Koener(1997). The analysis results confirmed that the connection strength for the design of geosynthetics should be evaluate using reasonable method with considering various factor, such as safety factor, installation and importance of construction.

  • Rock brittleness, which is closely related to the failure modes, plays a significant role in the design and construction of many rock engineering applications. However, the brittle-ductile failure transition is mostly ignored by the current statistical damage constitutive model, which may misestimate the failure strength and failure behaviours of intact rock. In this study, a new statistical damage model considering rock brittleness is proposed for brittle to ductile behaviour of rocks using brittleness index (BI). Firstly, the statistical constitutive damage model is reviewed and a new statistical damage model considering failure mode transition is developed by introducing rock brittleness parameter-BI. Then the corresponding damage distribution parameters, shape parameter m and scale parameter F0, are expressed in terms of BI. The shape parameter m has a positive relationship with BI while the scale parameter F0 depends on both BI and εe. Finally, the robustness and correctness of the proposed damage model is validated using a set of experimental data with various confining pressure.

  • The use of geogrid-reinforced earth wall technologies has progressed rapidly over the past 10 years in Korea because these technologies have advantages such as economical efficiency, graceful appearance, and easy construction. The geogrid used in the reinforced earth wall with concrete block facing can be subjected to damage among the upper and lower blocks and at the interface between the block and the geogrid. Therefore, when design of the geogrid-reinforced soil walls the required connection strength of the geogrid to the wall facing is an issue. In this study, new connection system between facing block and geogrid is developed to improve the damages of geogrid in the existing connection systems. The new connection devices are made of steel and have I-shape. This paper describes the test method and results of the laboratory testing for determination of connection strength in connection system using the I-type connection device.
