Remote sensing science is a rapidly growing field of Earth sciences. Since emergence and to present day, an extensive literature has evolved which traces the wide application of remote sensing in human activities. According to the ISI Web of Science in the 1975-2005 time span more then 20,000 papers were published on remote sensing. The number of papers grew exponentially with doubling period of about 6 years. Notwithstanding all specialized proceedings, there is a lot more remote sensing papers published in a vast list of source titles (up to 350 proceedings). Only 25% of retrieved papers are published in 10 proceedings which ISI assigns to subject category of remote sensing. In 2005 all these proceedings published 1291 articles and received cca 24,000 citations. Average impact factor of the proceedings is equal to 1.181 and average cited half-life is 7.1. It means that an average paper in remote sensing proceedings is cited more then once per year and half of citations the paper receive within the next 7 years after publication. The time line of remote sensing periodicals issued in 1927-1995 shows an exponential growth with doubling period about 15 years. After 1995 there is a prominent deviation from the exponential curve which shows the demand saturation for specialized proceedings. The features revealed are discussed in terms of dynamics and impact of remote sensing in current Earth sciences development.
Analysis method using remote sensing data is one of the effective ways to research a spatial and temporal variability of the mesoscale oceanic motions. During past several decades, many researchers have been getting comprehensive results using remote sensing data with application of data fusion methods in many parts of geo-science. For this study, we took the integration and fusion of several remote sensing data, which are different data resolution, timescale and characteristics, for improving accurate analysis of variation of the Kuroshio Extension. Furthermore, we might get advanced ways to understand the variability of the Kuroshio Extension, has close relation to the spatial and temporal variation of the Kuroshio and Oyashio Current.
Since most large earthquakes occur by reactivation of preexisting active faults, it is important to understand the locations and characteristics of active faults in terms of earthquake hazard research and earthquake disaster prevention. Recently, several remote sensing techniques are broadly used for lineament analysis performed prior to field surveys in active fault surveys. The aim of this paper is introducing simple principles and application examples of each remote sensing technique (satellite remote sensing, airborne remote sensing, InSAR, LiDAR) widely used for active fault investigation. This paper also explains the analytical methods for the slope break generated by fault activity based on GIS and the horizontal displacement of the strike-slip fault. In discussion, we would like to discuss the problems and solutions on making DEM based on aerial photography, and a new developed technique (RRIM) to overcome the problems of DEM based on aerial LiDAR. Understanding remote sensing techniques used for active fault investigation and utilizing appropriate methods depending on the situation and limitations of each remote sensing technique are important for effective active fault investigation.

Microplastics have arisen as a worldwide environmental concern, becoming ubiquitous in all marine compartments, and various researches on monitoring marine microplastics are being actively conducted worldwide. Recently, application of a remote detection technology that enables large-scale real-time observation to marine plastic monitoring has been conducted overseas. However, in South Korea, there is little information linking remote detection to marine microplastics and some field studies have demonstrated remote detection of medium- and large-sized marine plastics. This study introduces research cases with remote detection of marine plastics in South Korea and overseas, investigates potential feasibility of using the remote detection technology to marine microplastic monitoring, and suggests some future works to monitor marine microplastics with the remote detection.
The multi-disciplinary research project Strengthening Local Authorities in Risk Management (SLARIM), initiated by ITC, includes three case study cities in Asia. An important question is: what are the essential data for risk management and how to access such data. The role of common sources (e.g. census data), data derived from remote sensing (high-resolution satellite imagery, aerial photos), and data from close sensing (field observation, including mobile GIS) to acquire essential risk management data will be discussed. Special attention is given to the question of the minimum area and to disaggregating population data. A few examples are given of Kathmandu / Lalitpur, Nepal.
Today, the development of spaceborne Earth remote sensing is characterised by the increasing number and various types of remote sensing satellites, which are being operated in the low altitude and geostationary orbits with the help of rapid development of modern space technologies. It is believed that around 15 countries have programs to own their spaceborne Earth remote sensing systems, and the number of systems will be reached to some tens until the end of 2000 years. It is expected that Korean remote sensing satellites will be launched in sequence according to the national space program. The befinits will be magnificient because of the wide range of application area. Application of remote sensing information to the social infra implies that the potential customers can access the information, mission and the characteristics of the operation, and it is necessary to be supplied more information about systems and mission areas to our domestic users for proper applications. In this review we will survey the applications of the information acquired by the systems of USA, Russia and other countries. In this review we will discussed withing general application area, missions and systems.
As satellite technology progresses, a growing number of satellites-like CubeSat and radar satellites-are available with a higher spectral and spatial resolutions than previous. National initiatives used to be the main force behind satellite development, but current trendsindicate that private enterprises are also actively exploring and developing new satellite technologies. This special issue examines the recent research results and advanced technology in remote sensing approaches for Earth environment analysis. These results provide important information for the development of satellite sensors in the future and are of great interest to researchers working with artificial intelligence in thisfield. The special issue introduces the latest advances in remote sensing technology and highlights studies that make use of data to monitor and forecast Earth's environment. The objective is to provide direction for the future of remote sensing research.

The International Space Station (ISS) offers research opportunities to researchers through crew's space mission in the field of remote sensing. ISS provides the facilities to place and operate experiment equipments in a variety of fields, especially, microgravity experiments and Earth observations. This paper is intended to give readers a brief introduction to the ISS utilization and the capabilities for remote sensing researches. We investigate what kind of crew missions and payloads should be developed for remote sensing researches on the ISS.
To address the problem of multi-target retrieval (MTR) of remote sensing images, this study proposes a new object-level feature representation model. The model provides an enhanced application image representation that improves the efficiency of MTR. Generating the model in our scheme includes processes, such as object-oriented image segmentation, feature parameter calculation, and symbolic image database construction. The proposed model uses the spatial representation method of the extended nine-direction lower-triangular (9DLT) matrix to combine spatial relationships among objects, and organizes the image features according to MPEG-7 standards. A similarity metric method is proposed that improves the precision of similarity retrieval. Our method provides a trade-off strategy that supports flexible matching on the target features, or the spatial relationship between the query target and the image database. We implement this retrieval framework on a dataset of remote sensing images. Experimental results show that the proposed model achieves competitive and high-retrieval precision.
The International Space Station (ISS) offers research opportunities for researchers in the field of remote sensing to conduct world-class activities in Low Earth Orbit. ISS provides the facilities to place and operate research experiments in a variety of fields, providing investigators opportunities to perform research and Earth observation. This paper is intended to give the reader an introduction to the ISS utilization and the capabilities for remote sensing research that are being implemented through the development of research facilities. We hope that reader will consider what kind of payloads could be developed to take advantage of facilities, and will consider proposing remote sensing research on the ISS.
