  • Recently, the construction method of high pressure jet-grouting is in wide-use, for the purpose of structure foundation ground, reinforcing of ground behind propped retaining walls and cut-off in order to perform safe construction of underground excavation work. This study was performed a serious of tests of field permeability and unconfined compressive strength upon ground improved established on the ground behind propped retaining walls and examined proper jet mechanism by changing the construction parameter value of high pressure jet-grouting. In addition, we got the conclusion like the followings as a result of inspecting the condition of earth pressure distribution and deformation, using elasto-plastic method and FEM. 1. In that characteristics of strength of ground improved, with the same condition of construction parameter, unconfined compressive strength of sand gravel is shown bigger than that of silty sand by about 1.6 times and cut-off effect is shown to have effect of reducing the permeability of original ground by about 10$^{-2}$ ~10$^{-3}$ cm/s. 2. As a result of analysis of figures of horizontal displacing quantity of propped retaining walls materials regarding before and after High pressure jet- grouting through FEM, the reducing quantity of 0.1~0.3mm in maximum horizontal displacement is shown.

  • The changes of parameters of pressure and velocity of propagation of elastic pressure and shear waves in uniformly deformed solid compressible media are studied within the nonclassically linearized approach (NLA) of nonlinear elastodynamics to create a new theoretical basis of the geomechanical interpretation of various groups of geophysical observational and experimental data. The cases of small and large deformations are considered while their describing by various elastic potentials, i.e., problems considering the physical and geometric nonlinearity. Convenient analytical formulae are obtained to calculate the indicated parameters in the deformed isotropic media within the nonclassical linear and nonlinear solution in the NLA. Specific numerical experiments are conducted in case of overall compression of various materials. It is shown that the method (generally accepted in the studies of mechanics of standard constructional materials) of additional linearization (relative to the pressure parameter) in the basic correlations of the NLA introduces substantial quantitative and qualitative errors into the results at significant preliminary deformations. The influences of the physical and geometric nonlinearity on the studied characteristics of the medium are large in various materials and differ qualitatively. The contribution of nonlinear components to the values of the considered parameters prevails over linear components at large deformations. When certain critical values of compression deformations in the medium are achieved, elastic waves with actual velocity cannot propagate in it. The values of the critical deformations for pressure and shear waves differ within different elastic potentials and variants of the theory of initial deformations.

  • This study aimed to fundamentally understand structural changes of zeolite under pressure and in the presence of different pressure-transmitting media (PTM) for application studies such as immobilization of heavy metal cation or CO2 storage using pressure. High-pressure X-ray powder diffraction study was conducted on the zeolite-W (K6.4Al6.5Si25.8O64× 15.3H2O, K-MER) to understand linear compressibility and the bulk moduli in different PTM conditions. Zeolite-w is a synthetic material having the same framework as natural zeolite merlinoite ((K, Ca0.5, Ba0.5, Na)10 Al10Si22O64× 22H2O). The space group of the sample was identified as I4/mmm belonging to the tetragonal crystal system. Water, carbon dioxide, and silicone-oil were used as pressure-transmitting media. The mixture of sample and each PTM was mounted in a diamond anvil cell (DAC) and then pressurized up to 3 GPa with an increment of ca. 0.5 GPa. Pressure-induced changes of powder diffraction patterns were measured using a synchrotron X-ray light source. Lattice constants, and bulk moduli were calculated using the Le-Bail method and the Birch-Murnaghan equation. In all PTM conditions, linear compressibility of c-axis (𝛽c) was 0.006(1) GPa-1 or 0.007(1) GPa-1. On the other hand, the linear compressibility of a(b)-axis (𝛽a) was 0.013(1) GPa-1 in silicone-oil run, which is twice more compressible than the a(b)-axis in water and carbon dioxide runs, 𝛽a = 0.006(1) GPa-1. The bulk moduli were measured as 50(3) GPa, 52(3) GPa, and 29(2) GPa in water, carbon dioxide, and silicone-oil run, respectively. The orthorhombicities of ac-plane in the water, and carbon dioxide runs were comparatively constant, near 0.350~0.353, whereas the value decreased abruptly in the silicone-oil run following formula, y = -0.005(1)x + 0.351(1) by non-penetrating pressure fluid condition.

  • This paper presents a back-calculation technique leer the prediction of the behavior of earth wall inserted in multi-layered soil deposit. The soil properties are back-calculated from the measured displacement at each construction stage and the behavior of earth wall far the next construction stage is predicted using back-calculated soil properties. For multi-layered soil deposit, the back-calculation would be very difficult due to the increase in the number of variables. In this study, to solve this difficulty, the back-calculation was performed successively from the lowest layer to the upper layers. An efficient elasto-plastic beam-column analysis was used for forward analysis to minimize the computation time of iterative back-calculation procedure. The coefficients of subgrade reaction and lateral earth pressure necessary for the formation of p-y curve were selected as back calculation variables, and to minimize the effect of abnormal behavior of the wall which might be caused by any unexpected action during construction, the difference between measured displacement increment and computed displacement increment at each construction stages is used as the objective function of optimization. The constrained sequential linear programming was used for the optimization technique to found values of variables minimizing the objective function. The proposed method in this study was verified using numerically generated data and measured field data.

  • Assembled Earth Retaining wall (AER-wall is used here) using back pile (back supporting beam is used from here) has been developed at Pusan National University. Both cost and time have been significantly reduced because AER-wall can be fabricated in a shop. Also its stability has been improved with a back supporting beam reducing earth pressure. In this study, the test results were analyzed after laboratory model tests were performed. The lateral displacement of AER-wall significantly decreased with both inclined wall and back supporting beams. As a result, the stability of AER-wall and effect of back supporting beam have been analyzed and verified.

  • Inclined Earth Retaining Structure Method (IER Method), was developed in order to improve the mechanical properties of the existing earth retaining method. IER consists of two supports, which are front and back supports. In the IER method, back support is very effective for the reduction of the earth pressure acting on the front support. In this study, the effects of back support and fixing conditions of lower ends of supports are analysed by laboratory model tests in clay. The test results show that back support reduces the Leteral displacement of IER effectively, and according to the results the effect of interval and fixing condition of back support was analysed.

  • Interaction of xenon with alkaline-earth cations in Y zeolite supercage was studied by xenon adsorption and $^{129}Xe$ NMR experiments. The CaY and the BaY samples were prepared by exchanging $Ca^{2+}$ and $Ba^{2+}$ into a high-purity NaY zeolite. Xenon adsorption isotherms of these samples were obtained by using a conventional volummetric gas adsorption apparatus in the range of 260 to 320 K and the chemical shift in the $^{129}Xe$ NMR spectrum of the adsorbed xenon was measured at 296 K. The chemical shift against pressure was quantitatively explained assuming that the xenon gas exchanged very rapidly between various adsorption sites consisting of zeolite-framework surface and alkaline-earth ion. From this analysis, it was found that the alkaline-earth ion adsorbed xenon more strongly than $Na^+$ ion and zeolite-framework surface. Baring on the difference of the adsorption strength, the number of the alkaline-earth cations present in the zeolite supercage could be estimated by analyzing the adsorption isotherm.

  • The structure such as underground external walls of buildings, conduit and box culvert supports the surcharge loads (point, strip and line loads) . The vertical and horizontal stresses in a soil mass depend on the backfill width and wall friction, etc. The investigations described in this paper is designed to identify the magnitude and the distributions of the lateral and vertical pressure which is occurred by the narrowly backfilled soil in an open cut by the surcharge loads. For these purposes, model tests were performed for various width of backfill in a model test box by considering the wall friction using carbon rods. The results of test were compared with the theories of Weissenbach and VS Army Code and also with the results of the numerical analysis using finite difference method which introduces Mohr-Coulomb failure hypothesis.

  • In order to improve the hydrogen storage capacity and the activation properties of the hydrogen storage alloys, the rare-earth metal alloy series, $MmNi_{ 4.5}$$Mn_{0.5}$ $Zr_{x}$ (x=0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1), are prepared by adding the excess Zr in $MmNi_{4.5}$ $Mn_{0.5}$ / alloy for the strong resistance to intrinsic degradation. The hydrogen storage alloys of rare-earth metal such as $LaNi_{5}$ , and $MmNi_{5}$X and $MmNi_{4.5}$ /$_Mn{0.5}$ alloys which substituted La by misch metal properties were characterized as well. The hydrogen storage alloys were produced by melting each metal mixture in arc melting furnace, and the as-cast alloys were heat-treated at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 10 hr. The major elements of misch metal(Mm) were La, Ce, Pr and Nd with some impurities less than 1wt.% determined by ICP-AES. X-ray diffraction indicated that the structure for these samples was a single phase of hexagonal with $CaCu^{5}$ type. As the Zr contents increases, the activation time and the plateau pressure decrease and sloping of the plateau pressure increase. Amount of the 2nd phases increases with increase in Zr contents in $MmNi_{ 4.5}$$Mn_{0.5}$ $Zr_{0.1}$ alloy, This phenomenon indicated that $ZrNi_3$ in this phase, which shows the maximum storage capacity and the strong resistance to intrinsic degradation, is considered as a proper alloy for hydrogen storage..

  • Recently, the spark and the overheat due to in the failure of pressure contacts on connecting points and the momentary short circuit have been the major causes of electrical fire because these may cause the deposition and the graphite of insulating materials in electrical wiring system. Also, because in these cases the current is a surge one, the losses and faults of a communication, a home appliances, a computer and a measuring instrument may occur. Especially, in such cases, we are very difficult to detect the failure of pressure contacts on connecting points and the momentary short circuit. In this paper, we have developed an auxiliary control device, the electrical fire prevention control device(EFPCD), of an earth leakage breaker(ELB). And we can pre-vent the electrical fire caused by the spark and the overheat occurring in the failure of pressure contacts in connecting points and the momentary short circuit with the EFPCD.
