Generally the lower part of the Earth's atmosphere, which is 20km above the ground, is called "air." The composition of this area is almost consistent consisting of nitrogen, oxygen, and other gases. Air density refers to the mass per unit volume of earth atmosphere. Though air is made of the mixed gases in a constant composition, the water vapor is one of the very changeable components. The density of moist air is lower than the dry one at the same temperature and pressure. As the density varies according to the pressure and temperature, this paper attempts to explore the main factors in the air quantity calculation by examining first the density calculation process according to the air property, and second the relation between the actual and standard air flow.

If a conventional type of Plastic Board Drain (PBD) is installed to the deep clay deposit, it is subjected to a high lateral earth pressure. a flow channel of PBD may be reduced by the collapse of cores and clogged by the intrusion of filter into the space between cores which are made by lateral pressure. It could decrease the ability of initial discharge capacity and the reliability of long term discharge capacity. A cylindrical plastic board drain (C-PBD) considered in this study consists of cylindrical core and several supports so that it can prevent the reduction of area of flow channel from the higher lateral earth pressure effectively. The discharge capacity of C-PBD was compared to that of a conventional PBD through performing experiments using the composite discharge capacity apparatus which can consider in-situ condition such as penetration of drains, ground settlement and discharge capacity. As a result, C-PBD showed much better performance than PBD in the ability of discharge. It was observed that the C-PBD was folded whereas the conventional PBD was folded after the experiment.
The infinite layer compound $ACuO_2$, (A-Alkaline earth) consists of infinite stacking of $CuO_2$ planes separated only by alkaline earth ions. This compound attracted much attention because it contains only key ingredient of all cuprate high temperature superconductor; $CuO_2$ plane with controllable carrier concentration without charge reservoir block. High pressure synthesis method has been found to be preferable for this system due to its ability of doping various lanthanide ion into A site with larger superconducting volume fraction. But rigorous study on this rudimentary compound has been hindered by insufficient quality of sample. Especially superconductlng volume fraction was often too small to identify its origin. In this presentation, we report high pressure synthesis of $Sr_{0.9}Ln_{0.1}CuO_2$ (Ln=La, Sm). By controlling the heating temperature precisely during high pressure synthesis we could have superconductors with quite high superconducting volume fraction for this compound. The magnetic properties of the graln aligned samples show very different behavior compared to the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Details will be discussed.
To investigate the reason for the spatial difference in PM2.5 (Particulate Matter, < 2.5 ㎛) concentration despite a similar synoptic pattern, a synoptic analysis was performed. The data used for this study were the daily average PM2.5 concentration and meteorological data observed from 2016 to 2020 in Busan and Seoul metropolitan areas. Synoptic pressure patterns associated with high PM2.5 concentration episodes (greater than 35 ㎍/m3) were analyzed using K-means cluster analysis, based on the 900 hPa geopotential height of NCEP (National Centers for Environmental Prediction) FNL (Final analysis) data. The analysis identified three sub-groups related to high concentrations occurring only in Busan and Seoul metropolitan areas. Although the synoptic patterns of high PM2.5 concentration episodes that occur independently in Busan and Seoul metropolitan areas were similar, there was a difference in the intensity of pressure gradient and its direction, which tends to be an important factor determining the movement time of pollutants. The spatial difference in PM2.5 concentration in the Korean Peninsula is due to the difference and direction of the atmospheric pressure gradient that develops from southwest to northeast direction.

In this study, the results of the elasto-plastic beam analysis, finite element analysis and optimization design of the steel pipe sheet pile applied as an earth retaining wall under the deep excavation were presented. Through this study, it was found that the high-strength and sea resistant steel pipe has high allowable stress, excellent structural properties, favorable corrosion, and high utilization as an earth retaining wall, and the C-Y type joint has significantly improved the tensile strength and stiffness compared to the traditional P-P type. In addition, it was investigated that even if the leak or defect of the wall occurs during construction, it has the advantage of being able to be repaired reliably through welding and overlapping. In the case of steel pipe wall, they were evaluated as the best in views of the deep excavation due to the large allowable bending stress and deformation flexibility for the same horizontal displacement than CIP or slurry wall. Elasto-plastic and finite element analysis were conducted in consideration of ground excavation under large-scale earth pressure (uneven pressure), and the results were compared with each other. Quantitative maximum value were found to be similar between the two methods for each item, such as excavation behavior, wall displacement, or member force, and both analysis method were found to be applicable in design for steel pipe sheet pile wall. Finally, it was found that economical design was possible when determining the thinnest filling method with concrete rather than the thickest hollow shape in the same diameter, and the depth (the embedded length through normality evaluation) without rapidly change in displacement and member force.

Suction Drain Method is soft ground improvement technique, in which a vacuum pressure can be directly applied to the Vertical Drain Board to promote consolidation and strengthening the soft ground. This method does not require a surcharge load, different to embankment or Preloading Method. In this study, ground improvement efficiency of suction drain method was estimated when duplex loading pressure with vacuum and pressure. During suction drain method process, surface settlement and pore pressure were monitored, and cone resistance test as well as water content were also measured after the completion of Suction Drain Method treatment.

The earth structures and in-ground LNG tank, and buildings can be constructed with using artificial freezing method on the reclaimed land. In this study, upon freezing a saturated soil in a closed-system from the top, a considerable pressure was developed. The pressure is the result of the surface energy of a curved ice-water interface. The most significant of these parameters will have the greatest effect on the classification. In order to establish frost-susceptibility criteria based on frost heaving expansion pressure, more soils have to be tested. This study was initiated to investigate the soils frost heaving expansion pressure and moisture characteristics resulting from freezing and freezing-thawing cycle process. Weathered granite soils, sandy soil, sandy soil were used in the laboratory freezing test subjected to thermal gradients under closed- systems.

The main purpose of retaining wall methods for deep excavation is to keep the construction site safe from the earth pressure acting on the backfill during the construction period. Currently used retaining wall methods include the common strut method, anchor method, slurry wall method, and raker method. However, these methods have drawbacks such as reduced workspace and intrusion into private property, and thus, efforts are being made to improve them. The most advanced retaining wall method is the prestressed wale system, so far, in which a load corresponding to the earth pressure is applied to the wale by using the tension of a prestressed (PS) strand wire. This system affords advantages such as providing sufficient workspace by lengthening the strut interval and minimizing intrusion into private properties adjacent to the site. However, this system cannot control the tension of the PS strand wire, and thus, it cannot actively cope with changes in the earth pressure due to excavation. This study conducts a preliminary numerical analysis of the field applicability of the controllable prestressed wale system (CPWS) which can adjust the tension of the PS strand wire. For the analysis, back analysis was conducted through two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses based on the field measurement data of the typical strut method, and then, the field applicability of CPWS was examined by comparing the lateral deflection of the wall and adjacent ground surface settlements under the same conditions. In addition, the displacement and settlement of the wall were predicted through numerical analysis while the prestress force of CPWS was varied, and the structural stability was analysed through load tests on model specimens.
This paper presents the simplified but more rational analysis method for the prediction of additional internal forces induced in integral abutment bridges. These internal forces depend upon the degree of restraint provided tc the deck by the backfill soil adjacent to the abutments and piles. In addition, effect of the relative flexural stiffness ratio among pile foundations, abutment, and superstructure on the structural behavior is also an important factor. The first part of the paper develops the stiffness matrices, written in terms of the soil stiffness, for the lateral and rotational restraints provided by the backfill soil adjacent to the abutment. The finite difference analysis is conducted and it is confirmed that the results are agreed well with the predictions obtained by the proposed method. The simplified spring model is used in the parametric study on the behavior of simple span and multi-span continuous integral abutment PSC beam bridges in which the abutment height and the flexural rigidity of piles are varied. These results are compared with those obtained by loading Rankine passive earth pressure according to the conventional method. From the results of parametric study, it was shown that the abutment height, the relative flexural rigidity of superstructure and piles, and the earth pressure induced by temperature change greatly affect the overall structural response of the bridge system. It may be possible to obtain more rational and economical designs for integral abutment bridges by the proposed method.

The behaviors and design procedures of wale in innovative prestressed support(IPS) system are presented in this paper. Using the theory of the beam on elastic foundation, the member forces of the wale under initial pretension are evaluated. Choosing cable tensions as redundant forces, member forces subjected to earth pressure are calculated by the statically indeterminate analysis. The computer analysis model under uniform and non-uniform earth pressure is constructed using beam element for the IPS wale, tension-only element for cable, and compression-only element for soil. Axial forces and bending moments of IPS wale under initial pretension and design earth pressure are calculated. The combined stresses due to these axial force and bending moment are estimated to satisfy the design formula.
