  • To many, recent allegations of earnings management at Enron, coupled with similar ones at many other corporations, are a strong indication of a serious decay in business ethics. Nevertheless, the field of Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) has grown exponentially in the last decade. This study investigates the effects of CSR on earnings management. Different to precedent works which focus on Financial Performance, this study attempts to provide empirical evidence for relevance of CSR and Discretionary Accruals(DA). The study used variables in the sustainability report, and DA for its earning management too progress empirical analysis because it is believed that the measurement of accounting transparency is highly related to the CEO's opportunistic selection of the accounting. In terms of Sustainable management activities, Employee training time(ETT) is significantly and negatively associated with Discretionary accruals(DA). And also Industrial Accidents Ratio(IAR) is significantly and negatively associated with Discretionary accruals. Consequently, empirical results suggest that Discretionary accruals associated with the company's CSR activities, such as ETT, and IAR. In this study, there are limitation of generalizations and omitted variable problem.

  • This thesis examines whether accounting information-earnings and book values-has the value relevance in the KOSDAQ. The study is motivated by previous studies which have examined the value relevance of accounting information. Prior researches have focused on KSE(Korea Stock Exchange). But, prior researches have not examined the value relevance of accounting information in KOSDAQ. So, this study examined the value relevance of accounting information which is disclosed by firms on KOSDAQ and whether accounting information between firms on KOSDAQ and KSE has the discriminative value relevance, underlying the expectation that KOSDAQ firms will have higher future profitability than KSE firms. In other words, book-value multiples of KOSDAQ firms is higher than book-value multiples of KSE firms and earnings multiples of KOSDAQ firms is lower than earnings multiples of KSE firms. The value relevance of accounting information is examined by a valuation framework presented by Ohlson(1995), which expresses the stock-price as a function of both earnings and book values of equity. The results indicate that accounting information of KOSDAQ has significant explanatory power for stock price over the 2005-2007 period. KOSDAQ firm are divided by Venture firms and Small to Mid size firms. KOSDAQ Venture firms have the discriminative value relevance, compared with KSE firms. But, KOSDAQ Small to Mid size firms have not the discriminative value relevance, compared with KSE firms.

  • This Study analyzes the predictability of accounting information from mandatory K-IFRS adoption using the K-IFRS reconciliations information. We use the sample of 2,557 firm-year Korea listed companies belonging to non-financial corporate sector during 2010-2016. Specifically, we examine whether K-IFS reconciliation would improve or reduce the predicting power for future earnings after K-IFRS adoption. The results of empirical analyses show that reconciliation information from discretionary judgement tend to reduce the predicting power of K-IFRS based accounting earnings for future earnings. This result indicates that managers are likely to use the adjustments process to reconcile K-GAAP accounting numbers with corresponding K-IFRS as means to realize the various private utility. This study is expected to provide useful information by suggesting the need for more rigid screening schemes for the K-IFRS reconciliation process and also for adequate measures to be taken to ensure that the interests of the outside investors are properly protected.

Besides, CSR has a positive effect on Earning Management. The results of this study contrary to research conducted by prior research which states that CSR can reduce earning management because CSR not only increases information transparency but also creates interaction with stakeholders. In accounting research, many papers have been concentrating on tunneling that be designated as expropriation of minority shareholders by controlling shareholders. Although majority previous paper suggested related-party transaction has a negative effect to firm value, some research on related-party transaction argued it has a positive effect, also. We assume that they can't consider compositive meaning of related-party transaction and result of prior studies are mixed. • This paper relates the valuation consequences of common-stock, convertible-debt and straight-debt offering announcements to the issuing firms' stock price performance in periods before the announcements. Similar to previous studies on equity offerings, we find that the announcement effects of security offerings, regardless of offering types, are negatively correlated with the short-term pre-offering stock returns. We show that the informational impact of the preceding earnings and dividend(E/D) announcements account for the previous findings of the negative correlation. We further report that security issues following 'good-news' E/D announcements result in larger stock price declines than issues following 'bad-news' E/D announcements. The finding is consistent with the hypothesis that the E/D information affects the investors' assessments of the firm's cash flow expectations and of the probability of external financing.

  • This study aimed to examine earnings quality of firms selected as Global Champs project which has been promoted by the government since 2013 to support small and medium sized enterprises, for the screening year(t-1) and selected year(t). Earing quality is measured as the value of discretionary accruals estimated by Dechow et al.(1995) adjusted Jones model and Kothari et al.(2005) model, respectively. I analyze the differences of earning quality between the Global Champ firms and the paired firms selected through criteria of the similar total assets and the same industry in the screening year and the selected year. This study is motivated by the needs of measurement of the performance of the Project from the accounting transparent point of view. As the results of this study, major findings are summarized as follows. Firstly the earnings quality of the selected firms was lower than that of the paired firms. This can be explained as a result of motivation of earnings management by companies eager to meet the requirements to be selected for the Project. Secondly, in the selected year, the earnings quality was proved to improve, comparing to the screening year. This can be explained by the efforts of companies to reinforce management innovation and transparent management, which in turn led to positive effects on the earnings quality. These findings were found to be consistent in the additional analyses, where the earning quality of the reconstructed sample with only selected companies was compared for the screening year and the selected year, based on the year before the screening year(t-2).
