The Early-age construction loading and changing properties of concrete, especially in the multi-story structures can affect the slab deflection, significantly. Based on previously conducted experiment on eight simply-supported one-way slabs this paper investigates the effect of concrete type, fiber type and content, loading value, cracking moment, ultimate moment and applied moment on the instantaneous deflection of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) slabs. Two distinct loading levels equal to 30% and 40% of the ultimate capacity of the slab section were applied on the slabs at the age of 14 days. A wide range of the existing models of the effective moment of inertia which are mainly developed for conventional concrete elements, were investigated. Comparison of the experimental deflection values with predictions of the existing models shows considerable differences between the recorded and estimated instantaneous deflection of SCC slabs. Calculated elastic deflection of slabs at the ages of 14 and 28 days were also compared with the experimental deflection of slabs. Based on sensitivity analysis of the effective parameters, a new model is proposed and verified to predict the effective moment of inertia in SCC slabs with and without fiber reinforcing under two different loading levels at the age of 14 days.
When fresh concrete is exposed to sufficiently low temperature, the free water in the concrete is cooled below its freezing point and transforms into ice, which causes decrease in compressive strength of concrete. Of the many influencing factors on the loss of compressive strength, the age of concrete at the beginning of freezing, water-cement ratio, and cement-type are significantly important. The objective of this study is to examine how the these factors affect the compressive strength of concrete frozen at early ages. The results from the tests showed that as age at the beginning of freezing is delayed and water-cement ratio is low, the loss of compressive strength decreases. In addition, concrete made with high-early-strength cement is less susceptible to frost damage than concrete made with ordinary portland cement.
Creep of concrete is the most dominating factor affecting time-dependent deformations of concrete structures. Especially, creep deformation for design and construction in prestressed concrete structures should be predicted accurately because of its close relation with the loss in prestree of prestressed concrete structures. Existing creep-prediction models for special applications contain several impractical factors such as the lack ok accuracy, the requirement of long-term test and the lack of versatility for change in material properties, ets., which should be improved. In order to improve those drawbacks, a methodology to modify the creep-prediction equation specified in current Korean concrete structures design standard (KCI-99), which underestimates creep of concrete and does not consider change of condition in mixture design, is proposed. In this study, short-term creep tests were carried out for early-age concrete within 28 days after loading and their test results on influencing factors in the equation are analysed. Then, the prediction equation was modified by using the early-age creep test results. The modified prediction equation was verified by comparing their results with results obtained from long-term creep test.
Many researchers have rigorously studied the nonlinear behavior of stress-strain relationship of concrete using mathematical curves. Most of model equations for stress-strain relationship, however, have been focused on old age concrete, and were not able to adequately represent the behavior of concrete at an early age. A wide understanding on the behavior of concrete from early age to old age is very important in evaluating the durability and service life of concrete structures. In previous study by authors of this paper, a stress-strain model equation for low- and medium-strength concretes was suggested. In this paper, to extend the application region of compressive stress-strain curve to high-strength concrete, an analytical research was performed. An analytical expression of stress-strain curve with strength and age was developed using regression analyses on the experimental results. For the verification of the proposed model equation, it was compared to the experimental data. The result showed that the proposed model equation was not only compatible with the experimental data quite satisfactorily but also describing well the effect of strength and age on stress-strain curve.
The objective of this study is to examine the fracture characteristics of concrete at early ages such as critical stress intensity factor, critical crack-tip opening displacement, fracture energy based on the concepts of the effective-elastic crack model and the cohesive crack model. A wedge splitting test for Mode I was performed on cubic wedge specimens with a notch at the edge. By varying strength and age, load-crack mouth opening displacement curves were obtained and the results were analyzed by linear elastic fracture mechanics. The results from the test and analysis showed that critical stress intensity factor and fracture energy increased, and critical crack-tip opening displacement decreased with concrete age from 1 day to 28 days. The obtained fracture parameters at early ages may be used as a fracture criterion and an input data for finite element analysis of concrete at early ages.
In this study, a mathematical model is established for prediction of chloride penetration in unsaturated cracked early-age concrete. The model is combined with models for thermo-hygro dynamic coupling of cement hydration, moisture transport and micro-structure development. Chloride permeability and water permeability at cracked early-age concrete specimens are evaluated using a rapid chloride permeability test and a low-pressure water permeability test, respectively. Then, a homogenization technique is introduced into the model to determine equivalent diffusion coefficient and equivalent Permeation coefficient. Increased chloride transport due to cracks at the specimen could be predicted fairly well by characterizing the cracks using proposed model. Proposed model is verified by comparing diffusion analysis results with test results.
Concrete is known as a heterogeneous product which is composed of complex chemical composition and reaction. The development of concrete thermal effect during early age is critical on its future structural health and long term durability. When cement is mixed with water, the exothermic chemical reaction generates hydration heat, which raises the temperature within the concrete. Consequently, cracking may occur if the concrete temperature rises too high or if there is a large temperature difference between the interior and the exterior of concrete structures during early age hydration. This paper describes the contribution of novel Fabry-Perot (FP) fiber optic temperature sensors to investigate the thermal effects of concrete hydration process. Concrete specimens were manufactured under various water-to-cement (w/c) ratios from 0.40 to 0.60. During the first 24 hours of concreting, two FP fiber optic temperature sensors were inserted into concrete specimens with the protection of copper tubing to monitor the surface and core temperature change. The experimental results revealed effects of w/c ratios on surface and core temperature developments during early age hydration, as well as demonstrating that FP fiber optic sensors are capable of capturing temperature variation in the concrete with reliable performance. Temperature profiles are used for calculating the apparent activation energy ($E_a$) and the heat of hydration (H(t)) of concrete, which can help us to better understand cement hydration.

This research is focused on obtaining the fracture property of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) specimens at early ages of 1, 2, 3 and 7-day, respectively. For this purpose, three point bending tests of nine groups of SFRC beams with notch of 40mm depth and different steel fiber ratios were conducted. The experimental results of early age specimens were compared with the 28-day hardened SFRC specimens. The test results indicated that the steel fiber ratios and curing age significantly influenced the fracture properties of SFRC. A reasonable addition of steel fiber improved the fracture toughness of SFRC, while the fracture energy of SFRC developed with curing age. Moreover, a quadratic relationship between splitting strength and fracture toughness was established based on the experiment results. Additionally, afinite element (FE) method was used to investigate the fracture properties of SFRC.A comparison between the FE analysis and experiment results was also made. The numerical analysis fitted well with the test results, and further details on the failure behaviors of SFRC could be revealed by the suggested numerical simulation method.
The objective of the paper is to experimentally investigate the compressive strength of the concrete incorporating fly ash. Ordinary Portland cement(OPC). Water to binder ratio(W/B) ranging from 30% to 60% and curing temperature ranging from $-10^{\circ}{\sim}65^{\circ}C$ were also adopted for experimental parameters. Fly ash was replaced by 30% of cement contents. According to the results, strength development of concrete contained with fly ash is lower than that of plain concrete in low temperature at early age and maturity. In high curing temperature, the concrete with fly ash has higher strength development than that of low temperature regardless of the elapse of age and maturity. Fly ash can have much effect on the strength development of concrete at the condition of mass concrete, hot weather concreting and the concrete products for the steam curing.
