The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation among age, symptoms and initial medication (IM), and the tolerance duration of IM in Korean people with Parkinson's disease (PD). We studied 60 patients with untreated early PD who were initially diagnosed in our hospital between Jun 2006 and Sep 2014. We collected data on sex, age at diagnosis, symptom duration until diagnosis, main motor symptoms, frequency and duration of IM through electronic medical records. We divided patients into groups depending on the number of drugs (MONO/COMBI) and whether to contain dopaminergic property (DOPA/NDOPA). We analyzed the correlation between age and symptoms in each two groups and calculated the mean tolerance duration of IM in each of the groups. The mean symptom duration until diagnosis was 12.2 months. The most frequent drug was levodopa formulations (80%) compared to dopamine agonists (58.3%). The number of patients in the COMBI group (63.3%) was more than that in the MONO group (36.7%). Half of the patients in the COMBI group were taking LDF+DA (50%). Except for tremor, no other symptom showed a significant correlation between with IM. The mean tolerance duration of IM was within 200 days. The mean duration for COMBI group (342.7 days) was longer than that for MONO group (209.8 days). Among regimens, the mean tolerance duration of DOPA group (293.3 days) was longer than for NDOPA group (251.4 days). There was no difference in survival curves between any of the two groups. We found that patients experienced symptoms for over a year in Korea. This indicates that diagnosis time is faster than reported in other previous studies. The longest tolerance duration among IM was for dopaminergic combination therapy. More research is needed to design the most appropriate treatment for PD in Korean patients.
Pig farming, a vital industry, necessitates proactive measures for early disease detection and crush symptom monitoring to ensure optimum pig health and safety. This review explores advanced thermal sensing technologies and computer vision-based thermal imaging techniques employed for pig disease and piglet crush symptom monitoring on pig farms. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-invasive and efficient technology for measuring pig body temperature, providing advantages such as non-destructive, long-distance, and high-sensitivity measurements. Unlike traditional methods, IRT offers a quick and labor-saving approach to acquiring physiological data impacted by environmental temperature, crucial for understanding pig body physiology and metabolism. IRT aids in early disease detection, respiratory health monitoring, and evaluating vaccination effectiveness. Challenges include body surface emissivity variations affecting measurement accuracy. Thermal imaging and deep learning algorithms are used for pig behavior recognition, with the dorsal plane effective for stress detection. Remote health monitoring through thermal imaging, deep learning, and wearable devices facilitates non-invasive assessment of pig health, minimizing medication use. Integration of advanced sensors, thermal imaging, and deep learning shows potential for disease detection and improvement in pig farming, but challenges and ethical considerations must be addressed for successful implementation. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art technologies used in the pig farming industry, including computer vision algorithms such as object detection, image segmentation, and deep learning techniques. It also discusses the benefits and limitations of IRT technology, providing an overview of the current research field. This study provides valuable insights for researchers and farmers regarding IRT application in pig production, highlighting notable approaches and the latest research findings in this field.
Objectives: We intented to find out the effect of Gami-Eumcheonyijintang to patients who complain with coughing and to make it useful for treating the patients with the symptom. Materials and Methods: We examined the medical of 33 patients who visited with the symptoms of coughing, sputum in Kyungsan University, Hospital of Oriental Medicine from April, 1996 to February, 1999. and we collected the result of the administration with Gami-Eumcheonyijintong. We aimed to find any change in the symptoms, reappearance after recovery, and any special facts with the medicine surveying by telephoning to the patients. Results : the results are as follows, 1. It showed that patients who were under thirties showed higher rate of recovery(75.00%) than who were over thirties(52.94% ). 2, The acute-stage patients who were recovered in less than four weeks showed higher rate of recovery than those chronic-stage patients who were recovered in more than eight weeks. 3. The patients who didn't have the symptoms of sputum or had less serious problems of it with severe coughing showed relatively the highest rate of recovery(73.91% ). 4. The patients who showed the coughing symptom right after URI without any past constitutional history showed the highest rate of recovery(73.68% ). Conclusion : From the above result, we found that Gami-Eumcheonyijintang is more effective in early coughing symptom after URI than chronic stage coughing symptom. It is thought that more studies about medicine composition are needed in the further.
In an experiment to evaluate the various aspects of symptom of witches' broom of jujube tree with two different kinds of scions, taken from diseased plant and stem- grafted upon sound stocks-one cut before wintering(stored in cellar), the other after wintering, it was observed that the disease rate of those cut before wintering(Nov.) was $\98\%$ whereas those cut after wintering(March) showed much lower rate, $3\%$ initially and gradually increased up to $39\%$. In another experiment of diseased bud grafted into healthy seedling, the finding made in the following year was that 14 stocks(only one of which salt union by callusing) were infected out of the given 23- in the initial stage only 4, yet gradually increased to the number of 14. The shoots from the ground portion of the diseased stock were in general more quickly subjected to the disease than the others. Under natural condition, the diseased trees develop at first seemingly the same leaves as healthy ones; it is not until the branches and loaves grow to a considerable degree that the symptom appears. Once appearing, tile disease grows and the symptom continues to appear as late as in Sept. and early Oct., causing tile plant to develop the extraordinary branches and leaves of extremely reduced size, the typical symptom of witches' broom. Such phenomenon can be observed in the experiments of the foregoing paragraphs. And the suckers and roots of diseased plant are bound to be infected, it was found out with no exception. Viewing from the results of the above experiments and observation, it is believed that the low temperature during winter causes the virus in the above-ground portion of diseased plant to diminish or inactivated, and subsequently the virus in the roots moves up or multiply in the sprouting season.
During 2010 and 2012 grape harvest seasons in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, a white stain symptom was observed on the harvested grape fruits in 'Campbell-Early' and 'Kyoho' varieties. In samples collected from the infected vine, two different strains of pathogenic fungi have been found and identified as Acremonium acutatum and Trichothecium roseum based on fungal morphology and nucleotide sequence of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and supported by the phylogenetic analysis of the rDNA-ITS region. The DNA homologies of the isolated strains were 99.8% and 99.6% identical with T. roseum (IFB-22133) and A. acutatum (CBS682.71), respectively. In the pathogenicity test, the spores of A. acutatum and T. roseum sprayed on the grapes caused white stain symptoms on the fruits in two weeks after the artificial inoculation, which is similar to observations in the field. To our knowledge, this is the first report of white stain symptoms caused by A. acutatum and T. roseum on the grapes in Korea.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to examine symptom experiences, perceived health status, disease status, and self-care compliance of patients with liver cirrhosis and to identify the factors that affect their self-care compliance. Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional design and 148 patients who were being treated at D-university hospital in Busan participated in the survey. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Bonferroni test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: The factors affecting self-care compliance were symptom experiences, disease status, age, and gender. These factors explained 21.6% of the variance in self-care compliance of patients with liver cirrhosis. Conclusion: The findings indicate that nursing interventions that prevent patients' symptoms are needed to promote self-care compliance in patients with liver cirrhosis. The patient should also be helped to recognize the need for self-care compliance from an early stage.
Background: Bell's palsy is the most common disease of cranial nerve. While most electrodiagnostic tests can detect the abnormality of facial nerve several days later in Bell's palsy, blink reflex usually reveals the abnormality earlier than other tests. Therefore, we investigated the diagnostic usefulness of blink reflex in the early stage of Bell's palsy. Methods: We performed a prospective investigation in patients with facial palsy. We enrolled patients with Bell's palsy who were evaluated within 7 days of symptom onset and excluded patients with secondary causes of facial palsy. We analyzed the findings of blink reflex according to age, sex, evaluation time, and severity of facial palsy. Results: Of 320 consecutive patients with facial palsy, a total of 204 patients were enrolled. Blink reflex was normal for 10 patients and abnormal for 194 patients. The time interval between the symptom onset and the evaluation time was not associated with the result of blink reflex, but House-Brackmann grade was significantly related to the result of blink reflex (P<0.001). Patients with mild Bell's palsy often showed normal blink reflex. Conclusions: Our study shows that blink reflex is useful diagnostic test regardless of evaluation timing in the early stage of Bell's palsy, although it could be normal in patients with mild Bell's palsy.
Cancers can be detected in early stages through awareness of suspicious symptoms or by specific actions undertaken by individuals or participation in medical checks or screening programmes. The present research had three objectives: to assess the knowledge of Romanian women who have relatives with cancer with regard to cancer symptoms and detection methods; to identify socio-demographics factors influencing their level of knowledge; provide information regarding the attitudes of women from the study regarding medical help-seeking in case of any symptom which might be associated with cancer. This cross-sectional study was performed in an oncological hospital from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. It involved 160 women aged 18-70 years, who had relatives with cancer. An anonymous questionnaire was filled in by the participants. The results showed that around 10% of the study sample recognized all the 8 listed symptoms associated with cancer and all the 7 listed methods for cancer detection. The results of the linear regression analyses show that the level of knowledge regarding both symptoms and methods for detection was higher among younger women (B=-0.390, p<0.01, respectively B=-0.260; p<0.01), among those living in urban areas (B=0.872, p<0.01, respectively B=0.676; p<0.01) and those having higher educational level (B=0.883, p<0.001, respectively B=0.536; p<0.001). The majority of the participants agreed with the importance of looking for medical help within weeks up to one month in case that a symptom which might be associated with cancer was observed. The study underlines the necessity that much more information should be given to women who have relatives with cancer about what they can do to detect cancer in an early stage. This is especially needed for older women, women living in rural areas and women having a lower educational level.
Background and Objectives : Laryngotracheal stenosis in bum patients with inhalation have features distinct from other stenosis after intubation or tracheostomy. However few studies have been reported and the incidence was reported variable. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical manifestation and the incidence of laryngotracheal stenosis in bum patients with inhalation. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 138 bum Patients diagnosed inhalation injury who admitted to Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital from July 2002 to June 2004. Result : 5 patients were developed laryngotracheal stenosis. The incidence of Laryngotracheal stenosis in bum patients with inhalation was $3\%$. Symptom developed early in 2 patients, late in 3 patients.4 patients required trachostomy as initial airway support. The location of stenosis is subglottic region except 1 patient. Montgomery T-tube was inserted in 3 patients, and Single-stage laryngotracheal reconstruction was performed in 1 patient. Conclusion Incidence of laryngotracheal stenosis in our study is lower than other reports due to late presentation of symptom and early discharge after acute bum stage. Inhalation injury may lead to severe complication and sequelae, therefore physicians should be have a awareness for early diagnosis and all burn patients who have a history of inhalation injury should be followed closely.
