  • Stress coping mechanisms are critical to minimize or overcome damage caused by ever changing environmental conditions. They are designed to promote cell survival. The unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway is mobilized in response to the accumulation of unfolded proteins, ultimately in order to regain endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis. Various elements of coping responses to ER stress including Perk, Ask1, Bip, Chop, Gadd34, Ire1, Atf4, Atf6, and Xbp1 have been identified and were found to be inducible in oocytes and preimplantation embryos, suggesting that, as a normal part of the cellular adaptive mechanism, these coping responses, including the UPR, play a pivotal role in the development of preimplantation embryos. As such, the UPR-associated molecules and pathways may become useful markers for the potential diagnosis of stress conditions for preimplantation embryos. After implantation, ER stress-induced coping responses become physiologically important for a normal decidual response, placentation, and early organogenesis. Attenuation of ER stress coping responses by tauroursodeoxycholate and salubrinal was effective for prevention of cell death of cultured embryos. Further elucidation of new and relevant ER stress coping responses in periimplantation embryos might contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the regulation of normal development of embryonic development and potentiation of embryonic development in vitro.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the job satisfaction and the job stress of British child care teachers. Respondents, including childminders, were 137 British child care teachers who worked in nursery school, day nursery, creche, and playgroup. In the survey on the job satisfaction of British child care teachers, they were asked to answer two items. In the survey on their job stress level, they were required to rate their job-related stress levels on a 5 point scale of 'Job Stress scale' by Davis et al(2003). The results indicated: firstly, the British child care teachers are much satisfied with their job and have the low level of job stress. Secondly, their job satisfaction depends on who runs the child care facilities, what position they have in the centers, how long they work for child care, what qualifications they have. The levels of their job stress depend significantly on their present position in the centers. Thirdly, the job satisfaction of British child care teachers is explained about 27%, is related to their performing of daily routine, their age, the management of child care centers and qualifications of the teachers.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dental technology students' life stress and smartphone addiction in order to detect smartphone over-users early, prevent them from getting addicted, and obtain basic data for creating a positive environment for academic achievement by using smartphone in a right way. Methods: The subjects of this study were university students at D University and G University in Daejeon Metropolitan City and Gangwon-do. A questionnaire survey was conducted to the subjects who understood the purpose of this study and participated in it from March 1 to June 10, 2018, and 243 were finally analyzed except 24 questionnaires without sufficient answers. Results: As a result of multiple regression analysis with variables, which were significant in univariate analysis, as independent variables, there were gender and smartphone dependency as general characteristics affecting the degree of smartphone addiction, and family relations and future problems among stress sub-factors were selected as significant variables. Conclusion : In the case of college students, they choose the smartphone as the easiest way to relieve stress because they lack the time and space to actually release stress. Therefore, club activities or on-campus and extra-curricular activities are recommended, and it needs to seek a way to get rid of stress by solving the cause of stress through counseling.

  • Theoretical literature agrees on the interaction between financial instability and economic activity but explains it's dynamic in two points of view: one is that the transmission mechanism occurs in one unique regime and the other reckons a shift of regime leads to the alteration of the transmission mechanism. This study aims to find evidence of the multi-regime transmission for ASEAN developing countries. The author employs the technique of Threshold vector auto regression using the financial stress index standing for financial instability. Monthly data is collected, covering a period long enough with many episodes of high stress in recent decades. There are two conclusions: (1) A financial shock has a negative and stronger impact on economic activity during a high-stress period than it does during a low-stress period; (2) the response of economic activity to a negative financial shock during high-stress periods is stronger than it is during normal times. The findings point to the importance of the financial stress index as an additional early warning indicator for the real economy sector, as well as the positive effect that a reduction in financial stress may have on economic activity, implying the importance of "unconventional" monetary policy in times of high financial stress.

  • Objective : This study was conducted to elucidate neuroprotective effect of carnosine in early stage of stroke. Methods : Early stage of rodent stroke model and neuroblastoma chemical hypoxia model was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion and antimycin A. Neuroprotective effect of carnosine was investigated with 100, 250, and 500 mg of carnosine treatment. And antioxidant expression was analyzed by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blot in brain and blood. Results : Intraperitoneal injection of 500 mg carnosine induced significant decrease of infarct volume and expansion of penumbra (p<0.05). The expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD) showed significant increase than in saline group in blood and brain (p<0.05). In the analysis of chemical hypoxia, carnosine induced increase of neuronal cell viability and decrease of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Conclusion : Carnosine has neuroprotective property which was related to antioxidant capacity in early stage of stroke. And, the oxidative stress should be considered one of major factor in early ischemic stroke.

  • Thermal cracks are cracks that commonly form at early ages in mass concrete. During the concrete pouring process, the elastic modulus changes continuously. This requires the time domain to be divided into several steps in order to solve for the temperature, stress, and displacement of the concrete. Numerical simulations of thermal crack propagation in concrete are more difficult at early ages. To solve this problem, this study divides crack propagation in concrete at early ages into two cases: the case in which cracks do not propagate but the elastic modulus of the concrete changes and the case in which cracks propagate at a certain time. This paper provides computational models for these two cases by integrating the characteristics of the extended finite element algorithm, compiles the corresponding computational programs, and verifies the accuracy of the proposed model using numerical comparisons. The model presented in this paper has the advantages of high computational accuracy and stable results in resolving thermal cracking and its propagation in concrete at early ages.

  • Cyclic simple shear tests were performed to find out the effect of preshear on dynamic strength of the sandy soil. Tests were performed for the specimens with 40% and 60% of relative density, under three different effective vertical stress of 50, 100 and 200kPa. For 50 and 100kPa, preshear ratios 0.00, 0.08, 0.12 and 0.16 were given, respectively, For low and high relative densities, two different results are shown in dynamic tests. Under the dense conditions, the maximum shear stress ratio($\tau$$\_$cyc//$\sigma$$\_$vo/) and the cyclic shear stress ratio($\tau$$\_$cyc//$\sigma$$\_$vo/) causing a certain shear strain increase with augmenting preshear ratio(${\alpha}$). However, the maximum shear stress ratio and the cyclic shear stress ratio increase or decrease with increasing preshear ratio under the loose conditions. Correction factor(K$\_$${\alpha}$/) for preshear increases at an early stage and then decreases with increasing preshear ratio at loose condition and increase with increasing preshear ratio at dense condition. Correction factor (K$\_$${\alpha}$,Max/) for preshear increases with the increasing preshear ratio irrespective of relative density, and the value of has same behavior as K$\_$${\alpha}$/.
