  • Goats (Capra hircus) were domesticated during the late Neolithic, approximately 10,500 years ago, and humans exerted minor selection pressure until fairly recently. Probably the largest genetic change occurring over the millennia happened via natural selection and random genetic drift, the latter causing genes to be fixed in small and isolated populations. Recent human-influenced genetic changes have occurred through biometrics and genomics. For the most part, biometrics has concentrated upon the refining of estimates of heritabilities and genetic correlations. Heritabilities are instrumental in the calculation of estimated breeding values and genetic correlations are necessary in the construction of selection indices that account for changes in multiple traits under selection at one time. Early genomic studies focused upon microsatellite markers, which are short tandem repeats of nucleic acids and which are detected using polymerase chain reaction primers flanking the microsatellite. Microsatellite markers have been very important in parentage verification, which can impact genetic progress. Additionally, microsatellite markers have been a useful tool in assessing genetic diversity between and among breeds, which is important in the conservation of minor breeds. Single nucleotide polymorphisms are a new genomic tool that have refined classical BLUP methodology (biometric) to provide more accurate genomic estimated breeding values, provided a large reference population is available.

  • The treatments for symptoms of Alzheimer's disease are being provided and for the early diagnosis several researches are undergoing. In this regard, by using T1-weighted images several classification techniques had been proposed to distinguish among AD, MCI, and Healthy Control (HC) patients. In this paper, we also used some traditional Machine Learning (ML) approaches in order to diagnose the AD. This paper consists of an improvised feature selection method which is used to reduce the model complexity which accounted an issue while utilizing the ML approaches. In our presented work, combination of subcortical and cortical features of 308 subjects of ADNI dataset has been used to diagnose AD using structural magnetic resonance (sMRI) images. Three classification experiments were performed: binary classification. i.e., AD vs eMCI, AD vs lMCI, and AD vs HC. Proposed Feature Selection method consist of a combination of Principal Component Analysis and Recursive Feature Elimination method that has been used to reduce the dimension size and selection of best features simultaneously. Experiment on the dataset demonstrated that SVM is best suited for the AD vs lMCI, AD vs HC, and AD vs eMCI classification with the accuracy of 95.83%, 97.83%, and 97.87% respectively.

  • The demand for super tall building construction is increasing worldwide. There has been a constant request for achieving early payback on investment by shortening the construction time. This pertains especially for the case of huge investment projects such as super tall building construction. It is very important to shorten the construction time for the building framework, which requires substantial construction time and cost, and this is directly related to the establishment of an optimum lift plan for construction. When there is a problem in the selection of the lift equipment, it is almost impossible to revise the selection, resulting in a possible failure of the project. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyze the function and logic for the development of the process for the selection of lift equipment for super tall building projects and further development of making the analyzed process into a system. In line with this research objective, the process of selecting the optimum lift equipment by domestic construction company was investigated and analyzed as well as collecting the actual field data. The actual data were obtained by sensors installed on tower cranes at three construction sites with the help from the construction company.

  • Objective: The main goal of our current study was to improve the growth curve of meat animals by decreasing the birth weight while achieving a finishing weight that is the same as that before selection but at younger age. Methods: Random regression model was developed to derive various selection indices to achieve desired gains in body weight at target time points throughout the fattening process. We considered absolute and proportional gains at specific ages (in weeks) and for various stages (i.e., early, middle, late) during the fattening process. Results: The point gain index was particularly easy to use because breeders can assign a specific age (in weeks) as a time point and model either the actual weight gain desired or a scaled percentage gain in body weight. Conclusion: The point gain index we developed can achieve the desired weight gain at any given postnatal week of the growing process and is an easy-to-use and practical option for improving the growth curve.

  • In order to obtain basic information for selecting early maturing rice varieties which is suitable for early cropping before Alisma plantago in the southern part of Korea. Six rice varieties were grown from May to August in 2002 at Youngjeon Experiment Field, Sunchon and yield components and yield of plants were investingated. Early maturing rice cv. Grubyeo showed higher rough rice yield than any other varieties used in the experiment. It showed high yield components, such as culm length, panicle length, number of panicles per plant, number of spikelets per panicle and ratio of ripened grains. Therefore, it was concluded that Grubyeo was the most suitable variety with high yield for the cultivation before growing of Alisma plantago at the southern part of Korea. The heritability of culm length number of spikelets per panicle and rough rice yield were high and that of panicle length number of panicle per plant, ratio of ripened grain and 1,000 grain wt. of milled rice were low. According to the result of path coefficient analysis, characters highly correlated with rough rice yield showed large direct effects on rough rice yield.

  • To effectively predict financial crisis, this paper presents an early warning system based on artificial intelligence technologies. Both Genetic Algorithms and Neural Networks are utilized for the proposed system. First, a genetic algorithm has been developed for the effective selection of economic indices, which are used for monitoring financial crisis. Then, an optimum weight of the selected indices has been determined by a neural network method. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed system, a series of experiments has been conducted by using the Korean economic indices from 2005 to 2008.

  • This study examined musical concepts of early childhood teachers with the 'Sing-a-New-Song' activity and problems teachers face in the application of musical concepts. Participants were 10 kindergarten teachers; data were collected through lesson plans, videos of classes, and interviews with teachers. Results showed that (1) selection of songs focused on words of a song rather than musical concepts; ignoring development of the musical level of the children. (2) Goal-setting ignored musical concepts. (3) Class management confused musical concepts with other concepts. (4) No evaluation of musical concepts was undertaken. Problems included teachers' lack of knowledge of musical development in young children, insufficient understanding and limited application of musical concepts, and low expectations regarding music as a subject of instruction.
