  • Japanese pine sawyer, Monochamus alternatus, is a primary vector of pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus in Korea. Emergence characteristics of the adults were studied in Jinju, Korea using dead pine logs in which the larvae of the sawyer overwintered from 1999 to 2002. Emergence data showed that the adults began to emerge out of the logs in sunny place from May the 15th in average of the four years. Cumulative emergence ratio (CER) reached at 50% at mid-June, and the emergence terminated by early or late July depending on years. In shady place, however,50% CER was reached 17 days later than in sunny place. The 50% CER of males reached 1 to 4 days earlier than that of females depending on years. Of the adults emerged from the logs collected from February to April in 2001, 97.6% was univoltine, and the rest was biennial which emerged from May to July of the next year. Female and male adults emerged throughout 24 hours; 32.3% of the total adults emerged from 8 to 12 a.m. It took 68.0 seconds for the adults to escape from pine logs.

  • The following are some results obtained from a series of experiments in rotifer culture and its usage for the food of tiny fish fry: 1, Outdoor concrete ponds, each being $16m^2$, were used to culture the rotifers, Brachionus calyciflorus, and Filinia longiseta. Brachionus calyciflorus usually attained the population of about 100 individuals per ml of pond water. Dipterex was usually applied to control Daphni,a and other crustaceans that generally appear and feed on rotifers. A concentration of 0.16 to 0.2 ppm in the pond water was sufficiently effective to control these natural enimies of rotifers. Poultry dung was very effectively used to multiplicate rotifers. The fertilization ratio was about 8 kg each pond with 30cm depth of water. 2. The tiny rotifer, Filinia longiseta attained a very high population density of about 1,000 individuals per ml of pond water, but they were very sensitive to dipterex, and for this aspect future investigation may be needed. 3. In the outdoor ponds, the multiplication of rotifers significantly decreased when the water temperature falls to about $20^{\circ}C$ in autumn. 4. In the laboratory room, unicellular planktonic algae such as Scenedesmus or Chlorella, as the food of rotifers, were collected from the outdoor ponds by dipping them together with water, and were effectively used for the culture of Brachionus calyciflorus. If the planktonic algae are cultured in specially designed containers, the sun-light would be the most effective means as the source of light. 5. Brachionus calyciflorus cultured in the outdoor ponds by the dipterex controlled method was highly efficient to rear the early fry of marble gourami. The dipterex content mixed in the water to control the crustacean emmies of rotifers sieved no harm to the gourami fish fry.

  • In order to estimate energy budget of the rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli juvenile, during the period from parturition to juvenile, of rockfish were reared at constant condition of water temperature($16^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$). Energy used by the reared juveniles were calculated from estimates of data on growth, oxygen consumption, nitrogen excretion, feeding and energy content. After parturition, total length of juvenile was 4.56~5.49mm(average 4.97mm, n=20), and the average dally growth rates were 0.50mm at $20^{\circ}C$. The weight-specific oxygen consumption and nitrogen excretion rates decreased with increasing body weight. Temperature significantly affected oxygen consumption and nitrogen execretion rates, with the higher rates at $20^{\circ}C$ than $16^{\circ}C$. During the 25 days from parturition to jllveniles, feeding rates were 65.8cal at $16^{\circ}C$, and 89.2cal at $20^{\circ}C$. The assimilation effeciency estimated by nitrogen content of food and egested feces were 85.21% at $16^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. During the period from parturition to juvenile, energy was used the higher in body growth than in oxygen consumption. The gross growth efficiencies($K_1$)and net growth efficiencies($K_2$) of the rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli juvenile ranged from 43% to 47% and from 50% to 55%, respectively.

  • Life history of Ivela auripes (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), a pest of Cornus controversa, was investigated both in laboratory and field condition. At $24{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, developmental period from larvae to adult and adult life span was $26.3{\pm}0.3$ and $4.4{\pm}0.2$ days, respectively. Developmental period of pupae reared in the laboratory was not significantly different from those collected in the field. Female moths reared in the laboratory laid significantly less eggs than those emerged from the pupae collected in the field. Light trap catches was less effective than direct monitoring in the field. The two monitoring results showed that adult moth emerged from early June to late June, and the time of 50% cumulative emergence was 17 June.

  • The purpose of present study is to describe the taxonomy and early life history of Korean pomfrets, genus Pampus. Egg diameter varied from $0.83\~1.27mm\;and\;1.05\~1.41mm$ in P. argenteus and P. echinogaster respectively. Larvae of P. echinogaster of 16.5 mm in total length has full number of fin rays and enter the juvenile period. The egg is matured at 185.0 mm in total length in P. argenteus and at 95.5 mm in total length in P. echinogaster. P. echinogaster is ossified from jaw bone at $8.5\~10.0mm$ in to1 length and followed by ossification of vertebrae and visceral skeleton. P. argenteus and P. echinogaster are distinguished by the morphology of jaw, fin and isthmus. In P. argenteus, wavy ridges extends over the upper part of pectoral fin and gill membrane is broadly united to isthmus, while in P. echinogaster the ridges are limited to the base of pectoral fin and gill membrane reaching isthmus. These Pampus spp. are easily distinguished based on internal features, such as number of vertebrae, gill raker, pyloric caeca, epipleural bone, esophageal sat and length of intestine.

  • The individual toxicity of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) has been investigated by using the sea urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) germ cell and pluteus-larvae. The gametotoxic and embryotoxic effects of Pb and Zn on H. pulcherrimus were each investigated at 31, 63, 125, 250, 500 ppb and 16, 31, 63, 125, 250 ppb, respectively. Spawning was induced by 0.5 M KCl solution and the fertilization and normal embryogenesis rates test were performed for 10 min and 64 h after fertilization, respectively. In exposure to Pb, the fertilization rate was not significantly changed compared with control but normal embryogenesis rate was significantly decreased with concentration dependent manner. Fertilization and normal embryogenesis rates showed a significant decreased with concentration dependent manner in exposed to Zn. The normal embryogenesis rates were significantly inhibited in exposed to Pb ($EC_{50}$=45.13 ppb, 95% Cl=40.12~50.05 ppb) and Zn ($EC_{50}$=19.82 ppb, 95% Cl=18.26~21.31 ppb). In exposure to Pb and Zn, the NOEC of normal embryogenesis rate was <31.25 and <15.63 ppb, respectively. The LOEC showed each 31.25 and 15.63 ppb in exposed to Pb and Zn. These results suggest that the early embryo development of H. pulcherrimus is highly sensitive to heavy metals such as Pb and Zn, H. pulcherrimus can be used as a test organism for risk assessment in marine ecosystems.

  • Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), important pests of agricultural crops in Korea, including eggplant and potato, were collected in the Kyonggido area each summer from 1983 to 1986. Data were recorded for rates of parasitism against each host stage and seasonal activity. The parasitoids NothoserPhus afissae (Watanabe), (Hymenoptera: Proctotrupidae), Uga menoni (Kerrich), (Hymenoptera: Cha1cididae), and Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford), (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were reared from the host insects. A solitary larval parasitoid, N. afissae, was reared from 2nd to 4th instar brval hosts, with parasitism being highest in the 3rd instar collection. U. menoni, a solitary larval-pupal parasitoid, was reared from 3rd instar larvae to pupae, and parasitism was highest in the pupal collection. N. afissae and U. menoni occurred during June to September. N. afissae showed relatively high parasitism during the entire study period as compared with other species, while parasitization by U. menoni was highest in July. P. foveolatus, a gregarious larval parasitoid, did not generally appear until September, although it appeared in early August in the southern part of Korea. The number of P. foveolatus emerging from a mummy varied, ranging from 7 to 26 (mean = 13. 8).

  • Life history and control methods of Aphanostigma iakusuiense Kishida were studied during April to November, 1974, in the Naju pear orchard area, Cholla Namdo. The results are summarized as follows: 1. More than $60\%$ of wintering eggs were found at the height of 1.5 to 2.0m from the soil surface, with approximately $10\%$ at 0.5 to 1.5m and 1.5 to 2.5m respectively. 2. There was little difference in the size of egg masses and hatching ratio $(12.7-13.7\%)$ between the varieties of host trees, Mansamkil and Kooksoo. 3. Hatching was not observed until April 6, but hatches of $12.8\%$ on April 13 and $90.6\%$ on May 4 were found. 4. During the hatching season in early spring, 8 chemicals were applied to test effectiveness of control. C8514, Metasystox, Acar 338, and Parathion were more effective than either Sevin or Malix for control of this insect. 5. Highest populations of pear phylloxera ocurred from August 20 to September 20 at which time levels of eggs and larvae were simillar in abundance. 6. In tests for control of this insect after in paper bags, DDVP, Loxon, C8514, Sevin, and Binapacryl were more effective than either EPN or Otran. 7. Predacious mite, Protolaelape pygmaeus Miller, and several species of lady beetles (Coccinellidae) preying on this insect as natural enemies were collected. The predation ratio of mites varied according to region: that is 0.77 to $18.6\%$ in Bia Orchard; $7.88-48.7\%$ in Noan Orchard and almost none in Youngsanoo Orchard. 8. The varietal difference in fruit damage by this insect was in the order of Choseng Chuck, Kooksoo, followed by Sin Ko, Mansamkil, Keumchon Choo, and Changsimrang.

  • This study investigated the effects of temperature, salinity, and algal diet to find the optimal conditions for 5 days for the mass culture of the tropical tintinnid, Metacylis tropica. This tintinnid had a small, hyaline, and ovoid lorica. The oral diameter, length, and maximum width of the lorica were $36.7{\mu}m$, $49.5{\mu}m$, and $44.5{\mu}m$, respectively. In the temperature experiments, the highest maximum density and population growth rate were observed at $30^{\circ}C$ with 340.7 cells/mL and 1.1/day, respectively. Lower salinities adversely affected the population growth of M. tropica. The maximum density was observed at 33 ppt (840 cells/mL). In the diet experiments, M. tropica fed Isochrysis galbana showed the highest density (413 cells/mL) and population growth rate (1.2/day). As a result, M. tropica is appropriate as a potential prey organism for early fish larvae with smaller mouths because the tintinnid has a relatively small size compared to the rotifer. In addition, the conditions of $30^{\circ}C$, 33 ppt and supplying I. galbana would be effective in the cultivation of M. tropica.

  • The Pseudogobio esocinus were caught at Wyuleo-ri, Gyeombaek-myeon, Boseong-gun, Jeollanamdo from April to May 2003. The fishes were incubated in transparent aquarium located at the laboratory of Chonnam National University, and their embryonic and larval development were observed. The fertilized eggs were spherical, semitransparent, and adhesive, and were $1.98{\pm}0.19mm$ (n=50) in diameter. The embryo, including 31$\sim$32 myotomes, hatched through egg membrane at 164 hrs after fertilization. The newly-hatched larvae were $4.61{\pm}0.83mm$ (n=10) in total length (TL). At that moment, yolk was not absorbed, and mouth and anus were not open. Star and spot shaped melanophores were distributed on the lens, and dorsal, ventral, and caudal parts. At 42 days after hatching, larva was $16.22{\pm}0.65mm$ (n=10) in TL. Melanophores were scaterred at head, back, and side parts. Morphological features of the embryo were transferred to juvenile stage showing similar features with those of the adult fish.
