This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of geosmin production of Anabaena circinalis under different environmental condition. The test cyanobacterium was isolated from Lake Paldang. The growth rate and geosmin production of A. circinalis were examined with different variables including temperature (10, 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$), light intensity (60, 120, $240{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$), and phosphorus concentration (0.01, 0.05, 0.25, 0.50, $1.00mg\;L^{-1}$). The highest growth rate and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration appeared at $25^{\circ}C$, $60{\mu}mol\;photons\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ and $1.00mgP\;L^{-1}$ for temperature, light intensity, and P concentration, respectively. Total geosmin production was highest at the optimal growth condition of each variable, while chlorophyll-specific geosmin production (the ratio of geosmin to Chl-a) was higher at the less favorable growth condition, indicating high potential of the off-flavor problem during low temperature period, e.g., late fall and early winter. Our results demonstrated that geosmin production of A. circinalis was directly related to chlorophyll synthesis and varied with cellular growth condition.
Asphalt pavements have to perform under the conditions of heavily-loaded vehicles due to the industrialization and large temperature variance between the summer and the winter. Due to these factors, a characteristics change of early permanent deformation becomes a big issue, and to remedy this problem many research to use modified asphalt are being widely conducted. However, most of the modified asphalt is being paved after milling the surface course and applying tackcoating, and it is being used mostly for the repair and maintenance purpose rather than pavement of new national road. The purpose of this investigation is to obtain some fundamental data for the evaluation of the performance and long-term performance of the construction material mixtures by the laboratory test and field experiments. For the field experiment, 200m of two-lanes national road, that is being paved for the new national road under the direction of Pusan Regional Construction Management Office, was paved with SBS PMA and PSMA asphalt mixtures, which are an modified asphalt mixtures used for the surface course, on top of the base course paved with other modified asphalt mixtures. The remaining section of the new national road was paved with dense grade mixture. The laboratory tests assessed and analyzed the mixture characteristics by Marshall's stability test, strength tests and wheel-tracking test. On the basis of the evaluation result of the temperature control and roughness of the newly constructed road at the field experiment site, it is desired to evaluate and identify the most economic modified asphalt mixtures by long-term performance evaluation and LCC(Life Cycle Cost) analysis in order to apply the test result to the design of new road construction in the future.
This study was estimated on performance of deicers, corrosion inhibitors and low corrodible deicer used for removal of snow or ice on the road and on influence on structure. The weight loss rate after freezing and thawing of low corrodible deicer is lower than one of deicer, corrosion inhibitors and these combination. Relative dynamic elastic modulus of all except water, low corrodible deicer and NaCl+JF-1004 was radically reduced after freezing and thawing 150 cycles. And concretes after freezing and thawing were showed severe surface damage. It was found that individual use of low corrodible deicer and corrosion inhibitors had a problem of field application because of lack of early ice melting effect and considerably low durability. Products combined with NaCl was showed rapid weight loss by metal corrosion. Therefore, It will need to circumspectly select combination of deicers having low effect on concrete pavement and bridge if possible.
The causes of salt accumulation in soils of plastic film houses nearby Sumjin river estuary in Mokdo-ri($127^{\circ}46'E\;35^{\circ}1'N$), Hadong, Gyeongnam, Korea were investigated in 2006. With chemical properties soils and water analyzed and fertilization status monitored, the study showed that mean salt concentration of soil was much higher at EC $4.3\;dS\;m^{-1}$ than the Korean average (EC $2.9\;dS\;m^{-1}$) in 2000s for plastic film house's soil with exchangeable Na $0.8\;cmol^+\;kg^{-1}$ and water-soluble Cl $232\;mg\;kg^{-1}$, and then might result to salt damage in sensitive crop plants. Salt concentration of ground water used as main irrigation water source contained very high EC with corresponding value of $2.6\;dS\;m^{-1}$. Particularly, increase of EC value was directly proportional with the increased pumping of ground water used as a water-covering system in order to protect the temperature inside plastic film houses from the early winter season. High Na and Cl portion of ions in water might had contributed to the specific ion damage in the crops. Secondly, heavy inputs of chemicals and composts significantly increased the accumulated salts in soil. Conclusively, salt accumulation might had been accelerated by use of salted-groundwater irrigation and heavy fertilization rate. To minimize this problem, ensuring good quality of irrigation water is essential as well as reducing fertilization level.

The purpose of this study was to identify the state of demersal fish resource catch by small trawlers, which live in the southern waters off Goheung. We investigated the results of catch of sample fishing vessels, and performed fishing experiments using the actual fishing operation vessels from early November in 2002 till end of October in 2003. The daily amount of catch per vessel of the 35 small trawlers selected as sample vessels was the highest in summer seasons(June and July) as 70kg and the lowest in winter seasons(January and February) as 45kg and Octopus minor occupied as 17 to 30kg nearly 30% of the total catch. Additionally the catch of Octopus minor per vessel, per dragging hour ranges 3 to 6kg, which is the highest in March and June and the low in January to February, April to May and September. In the fishing experiments using small trawler, during the study period, a total of 75 fish species were collected. The number of individuals by species consisted 58.2% in Shrimps, 17.8% in Fish, 2.3% in Cephalopod. Of these, Parapenaeopsis tenella was the highest in 29.2%, Squilla oratoria and Crangon hakodatel was 14.6% respectively and Octopus minor was 0.2% of the total number of individuals. As far as the appearance number of individuals by month was concerned, February was the highest and then May, April and June followed in order, and October showed the lowest. Additionally the monthly catch per dragging was the lowest in December to January as 20kg and the highest in July as 160kg. Specially, Octopus minor was caught throughout the year regardless of season and the catch was the highest at the period from March to June. When looking into the body mean length of dominant fishes caught, we could observe the followings; Trachurus japonicus 8.9cm, Cynoglossus robustus 10.8cm, Muraenesox cinereus 15.3cm, Setipinna taty 10.3cm, Amblchaeturichfhys hexanema 9.3 cm and Collichthys niveatus 8.9cm, most of which were in their immaturity when they were caught.
Blue-green algae blooms occurred during early winter in the North-Han River, Korea. Among blue-green algae, Anabaena spiroides were observed for approximately 33 consecutive days, between 28 November and 30 December, 2011. A. spiroides emerged from Lake Uiam to Lake Paldang, depending on the flow of the river has spread downstream. Changes of physical water environment like rising water temperature and increasing hydraulic retention time influenced the A. spiroides bloom. The A. spiroides bloom showed a very rapid increase in cell density, and a slow decrease: the cell density increased to a maximum of $11,325cells\;mL^{-1}$ in Lake Paldang (st. 5), and was completely disappeared after the water temperature dropped below $4^{\circ}C$. A decrease in water temperature was the most influential factor among all environmental parameters, for the reduction of A. spiroides cell density. The A. spiroides bloom was accompanied with the occurrence of very high concentrations of the odor metabolite geosmin. Geosmin reached the peak value of $1,640ng\;L^{-1}$ in Lake Paldang (st. 4). The geosmin concentration was very strongly correlated with cell numbers of A. spiroides.

A hydroacoustic and a close-open-close zooplankton net survey were conducted to understand the distribution characteristics of the deep scattering layer (DSL) and to estimate the density of zooplankton in the DSL, in the Uljin coastal area. The survey was carried out during March 13-14 and June 4-5, 2003 at each station for zooplankton. The vertical migration mechanisms of zooplankton are very variable to the taxa. In this study, after we grasp the vertical migration of zooplankton through the results of an echo-sounder survey, we verified the mechanisms of their vertical migration in the Uljin coastal area. Also, to estimate effectively the biomass of zooplankton, we researched the acoustic scattering strength according to the species. On the basis of these results, we devised a method for estimating zooplankton biomass through comparing net and echo-soundings. We obtained the results as a follows; 1) According to the examination of collections from the net sampling, in March, 2003, Euphausia pacifica comprised $38\%$ of zooplanktons inhabiting the sound scattering layer, while copepods, chaetognaths, and amphipods accounted for $29\%,\;23\%\;and\;10\%$, respectively. And in June, 2003, the ratio of E. pacifica was $51\%$, copepods $43\%$, and the others comprised $6\%$. In both March and June E. pacifica showed dominance among the species of zooplankton. 2) The analysis of vertical distribution through acoustic data in the scattering layer was more apparent in June (spring/summer) of 2003, than in March (winter/spring) of that year. The vertical migration of zooplankton peaked around sunrise and sunset in both March and June. 3) As for the sound scattering layer, it distributed in the open sea in March, and in the inland sea in June. Therefore it is suggested that some zooplankton species such as E. pacifica performed ontogenic horizontal migration througth the spring and early summer.
This study was tried for a mathematical approaches related to daily fluctuations in the stomach fullness of Agrammus agrammus. The specimen was collected by angling and gill net from September 1984 to August 1985 off Shinsudo, Samchonpo. Fullness of the stomachs was increased in the early morning and the late afternoon, decreased in the late morning, at noon, and during the night. That is, feeding activity of the fish was more intense at sunrise and sunset. Daily feeding activity of the fish in a day was divided into the time period of gastric evacuation and both feeding and gastric evacuation. Stomach fullness with the lapse of time in the time period of gastric evacuation was geometrically decreased. Stomach fullness in the time period of both feeding and gastric evacuation was affected by gastric evacuation rates, feeding rates, and maximum fullness of the stomach. These parameters were able to estimate from the method estimating the regression coefficient in the relationship between the time(t) and the stomach fullness$(F_t)$, or between stomach fullness at the time t and $t+\Deltat$. The rates of feeding and gastric evacuation were the highest in spring and the lowest in winter. The relationships between time(t) and stomach fullness$(F_t)$ in the time period of gastric evacuation and both feeding and gastric evacuation induced from hypotheses were respectively as follows. $$F_t=F_{to}e^{-r(t-to)}$$, $$F_t=F\infty-(F\infty-F_{to})e^{-(p+r)(t-{to})}$$
In Korea, oysters are used as an ingredient of Kimchi (Korean pickled cabbage) in early winter. Although viral contamination of oysters, including contamination by norovirus, can provoke gastroenteric illness, little is known of the epidemiological relationship to outbreaks. We postulated that Kimchi ripening can reduce the infectivity of norovirus, in order to test this hypothesis, we carried out a model experiment. Since norovirus is currently regarded as non-culturable, feline calicivirus (FCV) was used as a surrogate to examine the activation of norovirus with Kimchi ripening. In commercial well-prepared Kimchi, the infectivity ($TCID_{50}$) of FCV decreased by 2 log every 12 hours and reached the limit of detection after 48 hours during over-aging at $25^{\circ}C$. During storage at $4^{\circ}C$, the infectivity ($TCID_{50}$) of FCV decreased slowly and reached 5.00 $TCID_{50}$ after 48 hours. The low pH appears to affect the infectivity of FCV directly via organic acids produced by ripening during over-aging and storage. In neutralized lab-prepared Kimchi (pH 7.0), the infectivity ($TCID_{50}$) of FCV also decreased and reached the limit of detection after 72 hours at $4^{\circ}C$. This indicates that there are substances beside organic acids in Kimchi that originate from the raw materials and are produced during ripening. Among the raw materials, salt-fermented anchovies and garlic showed high direct antiviral activity. The main factor decreasing the infectivity of FCV in Kimchi was the high acidity caused by organic acids, regardless of the type, produced by ripening. Furthermore, unknown secondary products of microorganisms associated with Kimchi ripening and antiviral materials originating from raw material might contribute to the decreased infectivity of FCV, the surrogate of norovirus.

This study was carried out to figure out on the changes of longitudinal salt movement in the soil through the soil according to the materials and thickness of salt prevent materials and the place of salt prevent at reclaimed land from the sea which is one of the most serious problems when tree planting. Changes of soil salinity were different depending on the seasons. In particular, the soil salinity was lower during the rainy season. But during the dry seasons including early summer before the rainy season and winter season, salinity was relatively higher. Among the seven interruption materials, crushed stone, dredged sand and wood chips showed better interruption effects than the other materials. The interruption effect of salt movement was highest in the both of side and bottom interruption treatment of salt movement than the side interruption treatment of salt movement or the bottom interruption treatment of salt movement. The thickness of the layer should be at least 20cm to prevent salinity effectively.
