  • The representative Cretaceous-Tertiary paleomagnetic poles of the Korean Peninsula have been obtained from primary remanences of unremagnetized rocks: $59.6^{\circ}N$, $194.7^{\circ}E$ for $K_{1M}$; $67.6^{\circ}N$, $207.7^{\circ}E$ for $K_{1L}$; $71.1^{\circ}N$, $215.2^{\circ}E$ for $K_2$; and $84.9^{\circ}N$, $292.6^{\circ}E$ for the Miocene. Chemical remanences of remagnetized rocks also yield Early Tertiary paleomagnetic pole ($83.9^{\circ}N$, $88.3^{\circ}E$). These paleopoles provide the tentative APWP of the Korean Peninsula since the Cretaceous, and suggest some tectonic interpretations as follows. The Korean Peninsula was located at similar latitude to the present position, and rotated clockwise with respect to the adjacent blocks during the Cretaceous. The Korean Peninsula experienced latitudinal movement during the Early Tertiary, which was possibly associated with the continental collision between India and Asia. The Korean Peninsula and Southwest Japan might be independent terrains during the Cretaceous based on the temporal discrepancies of the southward movements and the clockwise rotations of the two blocks with respect to Eurasia.

  • Thirty one samples from Late Cretaceous and Tertiary interval sections (468-783m) of the Kachi-I Well in Block II, Yellow Sea Basin, have been analysed for their terrestrially derived palynofloras. The systematic study of the palynomorphs recovered has yielded one hundred and fifty-five taxa; forty-three species of spores belonging to twenty-eight genera, seventy-seven pollen assignable to forty-three genera, and twenty-seven species assignable to fifteen genera and eight fungal remains. The results of both qualitative and quantitative analysis propose a succession of eight terrestrial palynomorph associations. Seven associations are erected in Late Maastrichtian and one in Early to Middle Miocene. Age determinations are on the basis of palynomorph taxa alone for the all associations. The Late Cretaceous/Tertiary unconformity is recognised at between 603 and 613m, based on the palynological data. The sedimentary basin during the Late Cretaceous seem to be lowland shallow marginal lacustrine with stagnant, mesotrophic conditions. On the other hand, the basin during the Early-Middle Miocene is considered to have been characterised by lowland swamp areas. The palaeoclimatic conditions during the Late Cretaceous are considered to be humid tropical to subtropical, while during the Early to Middle Miocene they are considered to be warm temperate with humid conditions. A comparison of palynomorph assemblages between the present study and the previous studies of Late Cretaceous in Circum-Pacific Northern Hemisphere is made, These assemblages reveal that lower sections (612-783m) of the Kachi-I well belong to the Late Cretaceous Aquilapollenites province of Herngreen and Chlonova (1981) and Srivastava (1981, 1994).

  • Stratigraphy has been renewedly set up and the evolution of tectonic events related to basin formation has been exam-ined on the basis of fault-slip data analysis in the Tertiary Eoil and Waeup basins of the southeastern part of Korea. First of all, field mapping was carried out in detail for Tertiary formations and then paleostress analysis were peformed with more than 400 fault slip data collected from 11 sites in the Tertiary formations and the Yucheon Group. It is judged that both the Eoil and Waeup basins filled up with Tertiary deposits might be simultaneously formed in separate locations. The Janggi Group in the Eoil basin is divided into following stratigraphic units in ascending order: Gampo Conglomerte, Hongdeok Basalt, Nodongri Conglomerate and Yeondang Basalt, and the Bomkori Group in the Waeup basin: Waeupri Tuff; Andongri Conglomerate, Yongdongri Tuff and Hoamri Volcanic Breccia. Paleostress analysis by using striated faults reveals five sequential tectonic events: (1) NW-SE transtension (event I), (2) NW-SE transpression (event IIl), (3) NE-SW pure extension (event III), (4) N-S transpression (event IV) and (5) E-W pure compression (event V). Therefore, five sequential tectonic movements are closely associated with the formation and evolution of the Tertiary basins in the study area: tectonic event I of NW-SE extension is related to formation of the Tertiary basins during the late Oligocene to the Early Miocene, tectonic events II, III and IV caused the termination of the Tertiary basin opening and the crustal uplift in the study area, and tectonic event V upheaved the east coast or Korean Peninsula with compressive stress due to intense subduction of the Pacific plate into Asian continent since the Early Pliocene.

  • We would like to give an introduction about Korean Tertiary Mathematics and curriculum in the early 20th centuryan Ttails like, when tertiary mathematics was introduced in Korea, who adiated it, and how it appeared in curriculum for college education were presented. From the late 19th century, the royal circle of the dynasty, officers, socd. Felites, intellectu. sculum in tand many foreatn my mionaries, who entered Korea, began to establish educational ulstitutions begulnearlfrom the nt80s. Kearl GoJongtannounced thescript for general education icentur. Most of the new schoo scadiated western mathematics as tcompulsory course in their curriculumiese introduced tertiary mathematics in most of the curriculumurse end curriculum in, lfrom nt85 to 1960. Since then, tertiary mathematics was tautit at most of the new private and public schools of each level and in colleges. We have investigated the history of Korean tertiary mathematics with its curriculum from 1895 to 1960.

  • The K-Ar age determined on six granitic rocks samples from the Eonyang- and the northwestern part of Ulsan-quardrangle, Kyeongsang-nam-do, Korea, ranges from $87{\times}10^6$ years to $58{\times}10^6$ years. Three of the samples belong to the upper Cretaceous ($87{\times}10^6-71{\times}10^6years$) and three to the late Cretaceous-early Tertiary ($63{\times}10^6-58{\times}10^6years$) in age. The early Tertiary ages are measured first on the "Younger Granites" in Korea. These two emplacement periods of granitic rocks are representative that the former is correlated to north Kyushu-Seto Inland belt ($95{\times}10^6-75{\times}10^6years$) and the later to Sanin-central Honshu belt ($65{\times}10^6-50{\times}10^6years$), in southwestern Japan.

  • Four Tertiary basins are distributed on the eastern coast of the southern Korean Peninsula, that is, Bugpyeong, Yeonghae, Pohang and Yangnam basins from north to south. The Yangnam and Pohang basins are the largest ones and have been well studied on their stratigraphies, paleoenvironments and geologic ages, and their tectonic history is representative on the tectogenesis of the Tertiary basins of the southern Korean Peninsula. The geologic events occurred in the Yangnam and Pohang basins from the Early-Middle Eocene through the Middle Miocene suggest that the Yangnam and Pohang basins resulted from the volcanism and rifting caused by the uprising magma, that is, by the diapiric tectogenesis.

  • Several volcanics are found within the Tertiary sedimentary basins, southeastern part of Korea. The sedimentary basins have been interpreted to have formed in the framework of separation of the East Sea. The volcanics are Eocene or Early and Middle Miocene in ages, showing a distincetve chronological gap, and show mafic and silicic (bimodal) in composotion. The Miocene volcanics were regionally and stratigraphically grouped into two varieties along the Hyeongsan fault; younger volcanics (13.6-15.2 Ma, K) from the north of the fault, erupted after the opening of the East Sea, and older volcanics (16.2-21.1 Ma) from the south of the fault. • Background and Objectives: This study was undertaken to investigate the educational status in bilateral prelingual deaf children with a cochlear implant (CI), also known as early cochlear implantees (CIs). Type of schooling and enrollment rate of tertiary education were analyzed as primary results. Subjects and Methods: Participants in this study comprised a highly homogeneous group of deaf patients who underwent cochlear implantation at a similar age. Sixty-four Korean patients were enrolled. Statistical data for disabled populations and the general population were obtained from the National Statistics Korea. Results: Among 64 patients, 46, 8, and 10 attended mainstream, integrated, and special schools, respectively. Notably, there was a significant difference in the type of school between hearing-impaired and CI groups (p=0.007). Ten of 13 patients enrolled in tertiary education. Conclusions: CI users were more likely than hearing impaired students to attend mainstream school. The enrollment rate of CI users in tertiary education was the same as that of the general population.
