Novel Oxide Thin Film Transistors for Transparent AMOLED

  • We have fabricated the transparent TFTs using new oxide material (AZTO: Al-doped zinc tin oxide) as an active layer. The AZTO TFT showed good performance without post-annealing. The electrical characteristics were improved by the post-annealing up to $300^{\circ}C$. The AZTO TFTs exhibited a mobility of $8{\sim}12\;cm^2/Vs$, a sub-threshold swing of 0.2~0.6 V/dec, and an on/off ratio of more than $10^9$.

Plasma Oxidation Effect on Ultralow Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon TFT on Plastic Substrate

  • The TFT performances were enhanced and stabilized by plasma oxidation of the polycrystalline Si surface prior to the plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition of $Al_2O_3$ gate dielectric film. We attribute the improvement to the formation of a high quality oxide interface layer between the gate dielectric film and the poly-Si film. The interface oxide has a predominant effect on the TFT's characteristics, and is regulated by the gap distance between the electrode and the polycrystalline Si surface.

A Fully Integrated Thin-Film Inductor and Its Application to a DC-DC Converter

  • This paper presents a simple process to integrate thin-film inductors with a bottom NiFe magnetic core. NiFe thin films with a thickness of 2 to 3${\mu}m$ were deposited by sputtering. A polyimide buffer layer and shadow mask were used to relax the stress of the NiFe films. The fabricated double spiral thin-film inductor showed an inductance of 0.49${\mu}H$ and a Q factor of 4.8 at 8 MHz. The DC-DC converter with the monolithically integrated thin-film inductor showed comparable performances to those with sandwiched magnetic layers. We simplified the integration process by eliminating the planarization process for the top magnetic core. The efficiency of the DC-DC converter with the monolithic thin-film inductor was 72% when the input voltage and output voltage were 3.5 V and 6 V, respectively, at an operating frequency of 8 MHz.

External Cavity Lasers Composed of Higher Order Gratings and SLDs Integrated on PLC Platform

  • Very compact 4-channel 200-GHz-spacing external cavity lasers (ECLs) were fabricated by hybrid integration of reflection gratings and superluminescent laser diodes on a planar lightwave circuit chip. The fifth-order gratings as reflection gratings were formed using a conventional contact-mask photo-lithography process to achieve low-cost fabrication. The lasing wavelength of the fabricated ECLs matched the ITU grid with an accuracy of ${\pm}0.1$ nm, and optical powers were more than 0.4 mW at the injection current of 80 mA for all channels. The ECLs showed single mode operations with more than 30 dB side lobe suppression.

A Low Power Design of H.264 Codec Based on Hardware and Software Co-design

  • In this paper, we present a low-power design of H.264 codec based on dedicated hardware and software solution on EMP(ETRI Multi-core platform). The dedicated hardware scheme has reducing computation using motion estimation skip and reducing memory access for motion estimation. The design reduces data transfer load to 66% compared to conventional method. The gate count of H.264 encoder and the performance is about 455k and 43Mhz@30fps with D1(720x480) for H.264 encoder. The software solution is with ASIP(Application Specific Instruction Processor) that it is SIMD(Single Instruction Multiple Data), Dual Issue VLIW(Very Long Instruction Word) core, specified register file for SIMD, internal memory and data memory access for memory controller, 6 step pipeline, and 32 bits bus width. Performance and gate count is 400MHz@30fps with CIF(Common Intermediated format) and about 100k per core for H.264 decoder.

Temperature, Current, and Voltage Dependences of Junction Failure in PIN Photodiodes

  • A PIN photodiode having a low dark current of 1.35 nA and a high external quantum efficiency of 95.3% fabricated for a passive optical network receiver. As the current was increased under a high voltage of 38 V and a temperature of $190^{\circ}C$, it was observed that there is a threshold current at 11 mA which induces a junction failure. Experimental data suggest that the junction failure occurs due to the crystal breaking at the end facet as a result of thermal heat or energetic carriers. This threshold behavior of junction failure is a valuable observation for the safe treatment of photodiodes. As long as the current is limited below the threshold currents, we have not observed failure events of our photodiodes.

A Bimodal Approach for Land Vehicle Localization

  • In this paper, we present a novel idea to integrate a low cost inertial measurement unit (IMU) and Global Positioning System (GPS) for land vehicle localization. By taking advantage of positioning data calculated from an image based on photogrammetry and stereo-vision techniques, errors caused by a GPS outage for land vehicle localization were significantly reduced in the proposed bimodal approach. More specifically, positioning data from the photogrammetric approach are fed back into the Kalman filter to reduce and compensate for IMU errors and improve the performance. Experimental results are presented to show the robustness of the proposed method, which can be used to reduce positioning errors caused by a low cost IMU when a GPS signal is not available in urban areas.

New Impedance Matching Scheme for 60 GHz Band Electro-Absorption Modulator Modules

  • This letter proposes a new impedance matching scheme of a traveling wave electro-absorption modulator (TWEAM) module for a 60 GHz band radio-over-fiber (ROF) link. A microstrip band pass filter (BPF) was used to achieve impedance matching at the 60 GHz band, and termination resistance was carefully designed to obtain an input impedance close to $50\;{\Omega}$. Also, a bias circuit for the device was designed in the module. The measured return loss and frequency response show that the modulator module observes the characteristics of a filter without the need of a further tuning process.

Widely Tunable 1.55-${\mu}m$ Detuned Dual-Mode Laser Diode for Compact Continuous-Wave THz Emitter

  • We report the use of a widely tunable detuned dual-mode laser diode (DML) as a compact and portable continuous-wave THz emitter. The wavelength difference between the two lasing modes of this DML can be tuned from 2.4 nm to 9.3 nm by using integrated microheaters. The power difference between these modes is less than 1 dB, and the side-mode suppression ratio is greater than 30 dB over the entire tuning range.

  • 최근 물류가 취급되는 발착장에서는 업무효율을 높이기 위해 RFID 시스템을 구축하여 물류의 발착업무를 자동으로 수행하는 사례가 늘고 있다. 본 고는 우편집중국 발착장에 900MHz 대역의 RFID 시스템을 구축하기에 앞서, 시스템을 구성하는 주요 장비의 기능 및 성능을 사전에 검증하고 대상장비의 신뢰성을 제고하고 시간과 노력 및 비용을 줄이기 위해 BMT 를 실시한 내용을 기술한 것이다. BMT 의 주요 항목으로는, RFID 고정형 리더의 전파간섭시험, 주파수 호핑시험, 롤파렛 인식시험 등이었으며, 해당 장비의 기능 및 성능을 기술적으로 검증할 수 있었다.
