  • ESR(ElectroSlag Remelting) Process is secondary fine process and melts steels by electric resistance heat and fines the melting steels by an appropriate solidification process parameters which affects the melting and solidification processes to get the high quality products. This paper describes a method to derive the mathematical model and analysis the dynamic characteristics for designing a controller of the ESR processes. The ESR process consists of a melting and solidificating processes and electrical system include the contact resistance mechanism. In this paper, we consider only the static relationship between inputs and outputs of the electric system because the dynamics of the electric system is so fast compared with the melting and solidificating processes which are analysed by using finite difference method. As the results, the fine processing in ESR is analysed and the process controller could be designed based on the process dynamic analysis.

The final products are determined through the velocity of melting and the course of solidification in the process that is achieved by way of proper course of solidification.   • The structure and properties of Fe-29Ni-17Co alloy which had been melted using induction furnace in air atmosphere and than electroslag-remelted were investigated. The oxygen content was reduced to 0.03% when the ingot was refined from $0.09{\sim}0.12%$ of that air melted. The amounts of spheroidal oxides inclusions and gas porosities of ingot were markedly reduced by the ESR process. CTE of ESR ingot contained small amount of oxides and porosities was found to be lower than that of AIM ingot, and tensile properties of ESR ingot and plate were found to be superior than that of AIM ingot and plate.

Effects of electroslag remelting process and Y on the inclusions and mechanical properties of the CLAM steel

  • Y-containing CLAM steels were melted via vacuum induction melting and electroslag remelting. In this study, the evolution, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the alloy inclusions (ESR-1 (0 wt.% Y), ESR-2 (0.016 wt.% Y) and ESR-3 (0.042 wt.% Y)) were investigated. Further, the number of inclusions in ESRed steel was observed to obviously decrease, and the distributions were more uniform. The fine Y-Al-O inclusions (1-2 ㎛) were the main inclusions in ESR-2. The addition of Y affected the prior austenite grain size (PAGZ), increasing the tensile strength at test temperature. Low ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) was obtained because of the fine PAGZ and dispersive inclusions. For the ESRed CLAM steel with 0.016 wt.% Y, the yield strengths were 621 MPa at 20 ℃ and 354 MPa at 600 ℃ in air. Further, the uniform elongation and elongation of the ESR-2 alloy were 5.5% and 20.1% at 20 ℃, respectively. Meanwhile, the DBTT tested using full-size Charpy impact specimen (55 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm) was reduced to -83 ℃.

  • In this paper, high strength pressure vessel steels having the same chemical compositions were manufactured by the two different steel-making processes, such as vacuum degassing(VD) and electro-slag remelting(ESR) methods. After the steel-making process, they were normalized at $955^{\circ}C$, quenched at $843^{\circ}C$, and finally tempered at $550^{\circ}C$ or $450^{\circ}C$, resulting in tempered martensitic microstructures with different yielding strengths depending on the tempering conditions. Low-cycle fatigue(LCF) tests, fatigue crack growth rate(FCGR) tests, and fracture toughness tests were performed to investigate the fatigue and fracture behaviors of the pressure vessel steels. In contrast to very similar monotonic, LCF, and FCGR behaviors between VD and ESR steels, a quite difference was noticed in the fracture toughness. Fracture toughness of ESR steel was higher than that of VD steel, being attributed to the removal of impurities in steel-making process.

  • In order to investigate the variation of microstructure and property of the Electro-slag Remelted M2 steel, microstructure observation, hardness, and bending test were performed by using optical microscope. SEM/EDS, rockwell hardness tester, charpy impact tester and bending tester, respectively. It was revealed that the number of inclusions and content of gas elements(S, O, N) in M2 steel fabricated by ESR process decreased markedly compared to those of AIM. It seems to be due to refining effect of ESR process. The volume fraction of carbides in quenched and tempered specimens after austenitizing at 1150$^{\circ}C$ and 1240$^{\circ}C$ was measured. The volume fraction of grain boundary carbides were found to be similar for both specimens. However, The volume fraction of carbides in grain decreased with an increase of austenitizing temperature. When specimen was austenitized at 1150$^{\circ}C$, grain boundary carbides showed needle like morphology. But, the carbides were broken with an increase of austenitizing temperature. The specimen austenitized at 1240$^{\circ}C$ showed higher hardness and lower bending strength compared to that of 1150$^{\circ}C$. As expected, toughness increased with sub-zero quenching treatment.

  • This paper presents development of a user-friendly automatic control system for ESR(Electro-Slag Remelting or Refining) process. It is a second-phase refining one, commonly applied to production of high-purity specialty steel. A primarily refined castingot acts as a consumable electrode and melts by the electric resistance heat generated when high current is induced through a slag bath. The quality of product is evaluated by its chemical composition, purity, micro-structure, uniformity, mechanical property, etc. To meet the standards, above all things, the process should be kept sound and the melt rate should track the optimum profile irrespective of environment variations.   • To improve the efficiency of fossil power plant, the higher steam temperature and pressure are required. Ultra super critical(USC) system meets very well this requirement. The HIP rotor is one of the most important parts of turbine in USC system and its material is easy to crack during hot forging. In this study, the upsetting and cogging process far $12\%Cr$ ESR ingot was analyzed and it is suggested a optimum process to avoid surface crack. The results were verified by test product with 4,200 tonnage press.

Ti-구형활성탄의 유동상 광촉매 특성 평가 (Characteristics of Ti-SPAC as Fluidizing Phase Photocatalyst)

  • 티타늄 담지 구형활성탄(spherical activated carbon, SPAC)을 제조하여 유동상 광촉매 반응에 적용하고 그 특성을 평가하였다. 티타늄을 담지하기 위하여 염화티타늄용액으로 이온교환 처리된 이온교환수지를 열처리 과정을 통하여 구형활성탄으로 변환시켜 주었다. 열처리 과정 중 감량되는 성분 및 무게 변화는 TGA/MS 분석을 통하여 알아보았으며,Ti을 함유한 구형활성탄의 물리화학적 성질은 SEM, XRD, EPMA, ESR, EDS, BET와 같은 분석을 통하여 그 특성을 알아보았다. 그 결과 Ti-구형활성탄의 입자 크기는 $350{\mu}m{\sim}400{\mu}m$, 비표면적은 $617m^2/g$ 이였으며, 담지 된 티타늄은 $TiO_2$ anatase 형태와 rutile 형태가 주를 이루고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 구형활성탄에 담지 된 $TiO_2$는 약 6 wt%로 균일한 분산도로 구형활성탄 표면에 담지 된 것을 EPMA 분석을 통해 알 수 있었다. 더욱이 ESR 분석을 통하여 간접적인 광촉매 활성을 확인할 수 있었으며, 따라서 이러한 결과들을 바탕으로 유동상 광반응조를 이용한 HA(humic acid) 광분해 반응에 적용하였다. 그 결과, 제거 효율이 약 70% 정도로 높게 나타났을 뿐만 아니라 반응 중에도 Ti-구형활성탄의 강도가 계속 유지되어 유동상 반응에서의 광분해 촉매로서 활용가능성을 보여주었다.
