An ESL Program in Higher Education: Is An ESL Program Only Enough to Develop ESL Learners' CALP?

  • The primary purpose of this study was to report overall findings of academic English proficiency of university ESL students in an ESL program from 2003 to 2008 at a university in the U.S. Furthermore, this study proposes to explore the effectiveness of the ESL program on developing the ESL learners' academic English proficiency. In order to achieve these purposes, this study applied a quantitative research methodology which analyzed data (more than 3,000 samples) collected by the university ESL program. The data included the ESL learners' English proficiency test scores. The results indicated that the effectiveness of the ESL program was significant in improving the ESL learners' cognitive/academic language proficiency across all three groups: ESL-only, ESL + Under, and ESL + Grad. That is, after either a complete ESL program intervention only or both a partial ESL program intervention and taking academic courses, the three groups' academic English proficiency was increased to almost same degree The findings are discussed and implications for pedagogy are suggested.

  • 무선 통신 기반의 ESL(Electronic Shelf Label) 시스템은 일회용 종이 낭비를 줄이고 노동력 감소 및 실시간 정보 업데이트가 가능하다. 하지만 많은 수의 ESL 모듈이 설치된 환경은 ISM(Industry-Science-Medical) 대역의 RF(Radio frequency) 통신으로부터 간섭에 노출되어 있다. 본 논문에서는 ISM 대역을 사용하는 ESL 시스템의 혼잡을 회피하기 위하여 가시광 통신 기반 ESL 시스템을 제안한다. 제안하는 시스템은 관리자 서버로부터 입력된 상품 정보 및 ID를 ESL Tag로 전송하며, ESL Tag는 ID를 확인하여 해당 상품 정보를 표시한다. 실험을 통해 가시광 통신을 이용한 ESL 시스템이 가능함을 확인하였다.

관능검사를 통한 ESL(Extended Shelf Life)우유와 non-ESL우유의 품질 비교 (Comparison of Quality of ESL and non-ESL Milk Depending upon Sensory Evaluation)

  • 우유의 여러 가지 품질 평가방법 중에서 소비자의 입장에서 중요한 기준이 되는 관능검사를 통해서 ESL우유와 non-ESL우유의 품질을 비교하여 그 차이점을 확인하였다. ESL우유의 1개사 제품과 non0ESL우유 4개사 제품을 $5^{\circ}C$$10^{\circ}C$에서 시료의 pH 및 적정산도는 그 변화가 크지 않았으며, 유성분인 fat, protein, lactose의 변화 역시 크지 않았다. 반면에 관능적으로 평가된 신섬함은 보존 5일차에 가장 신선하게 나타났다. ESL우유와 non-ESL우유의 QDA(quantitative descriptive analysis) diagram에 따르면, 동일한 조건상에서 저장지간 중 non-ESL우유의 관능적 품질 저하가 ESL우유보다 컸으며, 그 정도는 $10^{\circ}C$에서 두드러졌다. 우유의 신선도 평가 기준인 FFA(free fatty acid)와 관능적으로 느끼는 신선도 상의 상관분석을 통해서, 우유의 신선도는 FFA보다 우유의 풍미 및 미생물적 부패와 상관관계가 크다는 것으로 확인되었다. 결론적으로 우유의 신선도 결정에는 관능적 풍미가 가장 중요한 기준이 되며, non-ESL우유보다 ESL우유가 보존기간 중 신선함이 오래 지속되는 것으로 확인되었다.

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce Korean teachers and researchers ESL standards for TESOL students developed by TESOL association in 1997. The standards were designed to be useful for teachers and other educators who want to incorporate them in their educational programs for ESOL students in mainly the USA. These standards are important because they articulate the English language development needs of ESL learners and provide directions to educators on how to fulfill the needs of ESL students. Also. they emphasize the major role of language in the attainment of other content area standards. In this paper the author introduced not only the theoretical backgrounds. construct. meaning of the standards, and the ways of implementation but also their lessons to our Korean situation.

ESL과 EFL학습프로그램에 의한 아동 영어능력 비교연구 (Comparative Study on English Proficiency of Children of ESL(English as a Second Language) & EFL(English as Foreign Language) Learning Programs)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the improvement of English proficiency of children in the ESL and EFL learning style classrooms through the experiment method. The results of this research are as follows: first, the scores of listening and speaking and the perception of alphabets in the ESL program are higher than that in the EFL program. This means that learning in the ESL style classroom is the better way to improve English skills than in the EFL style classroom, which is common in Korea. Second, there is no difference in the English listening and speaking skills and the perception of the English alphabets between the two gender groups in the ESL & EFL style classrooms. These results suggest that the target language may be used in the English classrooms by the teachers and the students with the materials, books, and equipment are English. Teachers are expected to be in charge of playing decisive roles as demonstrators of speech, models and correctors of pronunciation and providers of materials including TV, VCR, CD players, and cassette recorders, etc.

Visual Thinking Tools in Enhancing ESL Students' Writing Ability

  • Writing is a difficult skill for many people, both for children and adult alike and generally most people find it difficult to write down their thoughts effectively. Numerous studies have revealed that teachers find it frustrating to teach writing and many failed to help ESL students develop their writing ability. The theoretical emphasis on process oriented writing instruction has, in general brought about positive changes in the way writing is taught and has become widely accepted in the teaching of English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL). Although the interpretation and implementation of the process approach varies considerably from instructor to instructor, nevertheless, the emphasis on process writing has brought about significant and beneficial changes in teachers' orientations to writing. Despite the theoretical recognition of writing as a recursive process, many ESL/EFL classrooms continue to teach writing as a linear sequence of planning, pre-writing, writing, revising and editing and has not enhanced ESL/EFL students writing ability to the desired level. There appears to be a missing link in helping students to crystallize their thoughts before writing. Studies have shown that incorporating visual thinking tools into the process approach of ESL writing can enhance students' ability to write. This paper reports the findings of an exploratory study on the effects of using visual thinking tools in enhancing ESL students writing.

전자종이 디스플레이 기반 ESL의 시장현황 및 분석 (Market Status and Analysis of ESL Based on Electronic Paper Display)

  • Recently, retail technology has been developed by the rapid evolution of e-commerce and a representative example is ESL technology. In this study, we investigate ESL technology, market status and forecasts, and analyze the competitive structure between relational companies. Market analysis refers to data from market reports of Marketsandmarkets and Research, and internet media. In ESL, the display field is predicted to account for 43% of the total market in 2026, and is converting from LCD to electronic paper. The segmented type is becoming more advanced into the full-graphic type, and CAGR of 18.7% for 3-7 inches and 20.6% for 7-10 inches is predicted. The demand for ESL is greatest in North America and Europe, but CAGR is the highest in the Asia-Pacific region at 19.1%. Since ESL technology has a lot of overlap with semiconductor and display technology, the Asia-Pacific region is relatively advantageous, and this has led to rapid growth of domestic companies. However, it is expected that competition from European companies that are actually owned by Chinese companies will increase in the future, so continuous technological development and new market development are necessary.

ESL 생산공정에 따른 시유 유래 미생물의 분포 비교 연구 (Comparative Characterization of the Bacteria Isolated from Market Milk Treated with ESL and Conventional System)

  • 본 연구는 ESL 우유와 시중 4개 회사의 일반 시유 제품의 보존 검사에서 분리되어 1차적으로 선별된 364 균주에 대해서 균주 분류를 통하여 우유의 저장온도와 기간 중의 우유내 우세균을 확인하고 ESL 우유와 기타 일반 시유의 미생물 균종별 분포를 비교하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 364 균주의 분리원에 따른 분류에서는 ESL 우유가 가장 낮은 검출 균주수를 나타냈다. 전체 분리된 미생물 균주의 분포를 보면, Bacillus 계통과 Staphylococcus 계통이 주로 많이 검출되었으며, Lactobacillus 계통을 제외하고는 매우 다양한 분포를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 우유 가공처리법에 따른 분리균종을 비교해 보면, LTLT 살균유의 경우에는 내열성이 강한 Enterococcus 계통의 균종이 특이적으로 많이 검출되었으며, UHT 살균유 중에서 ESL 우유에 비해서 기타 일반 시유에서는 Pseudomonas 계통의 저온성 미생물 균종이 많이 검출되었다. 보존온도별 균종 분포를 보면, Bacillus 계통은 보존온도가 높을수록 검출빈도가 높았으며, Pseudomonas와 같은 저온성 계통은 $10^{\circ}C$에서 가장 높은 빈도로 검출되었다. 기초동정 결과와 동정기를 이용한 동정 결과를 비교한 결과, 기초 동정법에 의한 균종의 분류 정확도가 매우 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 결론적으로 ESL우유와 일반우유의 미생물 균종 분포를 비교해 볼 때, 살균후 포장과정에서 2차적으로 오염될 확률이 높은 Pseudomonas 계통에서 커다란 차이를 보였으며, 이러한 Pseudomonas 계통의 미생물은 냉장 유통에서도 품질에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 따라서 ESL 우유가 유통 중 제품의 품질 향상과 수명 연장이 되는 것은 미생물 오염도가 낮기 때문인 것으로 확인되었다.

Pedagogical Functions of Teachers' Conversational Repair Strategies in the ESL Classroom

  • The present study examines various pedagogical functions of conversational repair strategies employed by the teacher in the ESL classroom. As part of interactional resources, conversational repair is defined as the treatment of trouble occurring in interactive language use and is originally designed to deal with communication problems. Research on conversational repair has focused on ordinary conversation and organization of repair practices. Studies on more pedagogical functions of repair sequences initiated by the teacher are very few. The data were from five hours of ESL structure classes in an intensive English institute at a large U.S. university. They were closely transcribed and microanalyzed following the conversation-analytic methodology. The analysis found that ESL teachers' repair techniques not only resolve communication problems but they are also designed to serve several important instructional purposes of teaching the target language. They include creating opportunities of comprehensible input, inducing modified comprehensible output from students, guiding and controlling student output, and initiating corrections by initiating repair.

  • Nonlinear dynamic analysis is generally used in automobile crash analysis and structural optimization considering crashworthiness uses the results of nonlinear dynamic analysis. Automobile crash optimization has high nonlinearity and difficulty in calculating sensitivity. Recently the equivalent static load (ESL) method has been proposed in order to overcome these difficulties. The ESL is the static load set generating the same displacement field as the nonlinear dynamic displacement field at each time step in dynamic analysis. From various researches regarding the ESL method, it has been proved that the ESL method is fairly useful. The ESL method can mathematically optimize a crash optimization problem through nonlinear analysis and well developed static optimization. The ESL is applied to nonlinear dynamic structural optimization of the automobile frontal impact problem. An automobile bumper is optimized. The mass of the structure is minimized while some constraints are satisfied.
