Various crop models have been extensively used for estimation of the crop yields. Compared to the other models, the EPIC model uses a unified approach to simulate more than 100 types of crops. It has been successfully applied in simulating crop yields for various combinations of weather conditions, soil properties, crops, and management schemes in many countries. The objective of this study was to estimate the rice and maize yield in South Korea using the EPIC model. The input datasets for the 30 types in the 11 categories were created for the EPIC model. The EPIC model simulated rice and maize yields. The performance of the EPIC model was evaluated with the goodness-of-fit measures including Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Relative Error (RE), Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency Coefficient (NSEC), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Pearson Correelation Coefficient (r). The rice yield showed to more high accuracy than maize yield on four type of method without NSEC. Theses results showed that the EPIC model better simulated rice yields than maize yields. The results suggest that the EPIC crop model can be useful to estimate crop yield in South Korea.
The traditional crop productivity simulations based on crop models are normally site-specific. To simulate regional crop productivity, the spatial crop model is developed in this study by integrating Geographical Information System (GIS) with Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC) model. The integration applied a loose coupling approach. Data are exchanged using ASCII or binary data format between GIS and EPIC model without a common user interface. The spatial EPIC model is conducted to simulate the average corn and wheat productivity of 1980s in North China. The results show that the simulation accuracy of the spatial EPIC model is acceptable. The simulation accuracy can be improved by using the detailed crop management information, such as irrigation, fertilizer and tillage schedule.

In this work the implementation of a production-level port of the Microplane constitutive model for concrete into the EPIC code is described. The port follows guidelines outlined in the Material Model Module (MMM) standard used in EPIC to insure a seamless interface with the existing code. Certain features of the model were not implemented using the MMM interface due to compatibility reasons; for example, a separate module was developed to initialize, store and update internal state variables. Objective strain and deformation measures for use in the material model were also implemented into the code. Example calculations were performed and illustrate the veracity of this new implementation.
Interest is growing in applying simulation models for the South Texas conditions, to better assess crop water use and production with different crop management practices. The Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model was used to evaluate its application as a decision support tool for irrigation management of com (Zea mays L.) in South Texas of the U.S. We measured actual crop evapotranspiration (ETc) using a weighing lysimeter, soil moisture using a neutron probe, and grain yield by field sampling. The model was then validated using the measured data. Simulated ETc using the Hargreaves-Samani equation was in agreement with the lysimeter measured ETc. Simulated soil moisture generally matched with the measured soil moisture. The EPIC model simulated the variability in grain yield with different irrigation regimes with $r^2$value of 0.69 and root mean square error of $0.5\;ton\;ha^{-1}$. Simulation results with farm data demonstrate that EPIC can be used as a decision support tool for com under irrigated conditions in South Texas. EPIC appears to be effective in making long term and pre-season decisions for irrigation management of crops, while reference ET and phenologically based crop coefficients can be used for inseason irrigation management.

The EPIC model was applied to assess the environmental impacts of two contrasting tillage systems (conventional versus ridge tillage). The model was calibrated with field data and validated with another set of data. The errors between the 12-year predicted and observed means or medians were less than 10% for nearly all of the environmental indicators, with the major exception of a nearly 44% over prediction of the N surface runoff loss for Watershed 2. The predicted N leaching rates, N losses in surface runoff, and sediment loss clearly showed that EPIC was able to simulate the long-term impacts of tillage and residue cover on these processes.

SVM (Support Vector machine) is powerful machine-learning method, and obtains better performance than traditional methods in the applications of muti-dimension nonlinear pattern classification. For the case of SVM model training and low efficiency in large samples, this paper proposes a combination of statistical parameters of the GMM-UBM (Universal Background Model) model. It is very effective to solve the problem of the large sample for the SVM training. The experiment is carried on four special dynamic hand gestures using the EPIC sensors. And the results show that the improved dynamic hand gesture recognition system has a high recognition rate up to 96.75%.

Ontological knowledge modelling of epic texts, though being an established research arena backed by concrete multilingual and multicultural works, still suffers from two key shortcomings. Firstly, all epic ontological models developed till date have been designed following ad-hoc methodologies, most often combining existing general purpose ontology development methodologies. Secondly, none of the ad-hoc methodologies consider the potential reuse of existing epic ontological models for enrichment, if available. This paper presents, as a unified solution to the above shortcomings, the design and development of GOMME - the first dedicated methodology for iterative ontological modelling of epics, potentially extensible to works in different research arenas of digital humanities in general. GOMME is grounded in transdisciplinary foundations of canonical norms for epics, knowledge modelling best practices, application satisfiability norms, and cognitive generative questions. It is also the first methodology (in epic modelling but also in general) to be flexible enough to integrate, in practice, the options of knowledge modelling via reuse or from scratch. The feasibility of GOMME is validated via a first brief implementation of ontological modelling of the Indian epic Mahabharata by reusing an existing ontology. The preliminary results are promising, with the GOMME-produced model being both ontologically thorough and competent performance-wise.

Potential impacts for unfavourable weather conditions and the assessment of the magnitudes of their adverse effects on crop yields were studied. EPIC model was investigated for its capability on crop yield predictions for rice and soybean. Weather generationmodel was used to generate long-term climatic data. The model was verified with ohserved climate data of Suwon city. Fifty years weather data including abnormal conditions were generated and used for crop yield simulation by EPIC model. Crop yield probability function was derived from simulated crop yield data, which followed normal distribution. Probable crop yield reductions due to abnormal weather conditions were also analyzed.

Two application rates (9 and 18 t/ha) of poultry litter and a recommended rate of commercial fertilizer were studied to determine their effects on nutrient (N and P) losses in surface and subsurface runoff and loadings in soil layers from conventionally-tilled com by the treatments. The model predicted higher sediment losses than observed data from all treatments. The overpredicted sediment losses resulted in overprediction of organic-N and sediment-P losses in surface runoff. Simulated soluble-P losses in surface runoff were close to observed data, while NO3-N losses in surface runoff were underpredicted from all treatments. Observed NO3-N concentrations in leachate at 1.0-m depth from commercial fertilizer treatment were fairly well predicted. But the concentratins were overpredicted from poultry litter treatments due to high simulation of organic-N mineralization simulated by the model.

Chapter 1 and 2 of this study examined the methodology of modern storytelling using the hero narrative structure. This involved analyses of Joseph Campbell's monomyth structure, which is the prototype model of modern storytelling and Christopher Vogler's story structure in which the monomyth structure is classified into 3 Acts and 12 Stages. In addition, the movie 'Captain America' was analyzed based on Vogler's narrative structure theory. According to the analyses results, the hero of 'Captain America' fully follows Christopher Vogler's hero narrative structure but in some cases, he does not follow the existing hero narrative structure. It is interpreted that this is because heroes of modern tales have different birth backgrounds from mythical heroes. There is also a difference even in the stage where a hero completes all adventures and returns home between modern tales and myths due to different social backgrounds. Therefore, these findings provide a basis for modification and supplementation of a modern hero epic. Through this analysis, the modified modern hero narrative structure is evaluated to be appropriate as a basic model for modern storytelling. Further, it is expected that those who frame a film script can complete a new hero epic while following the structure of syntagmatic systems by selecting a level among Northrop Frye's paragmatic systems based on this structure and considering story themes and heroes' personality and characteristics.
