The Comparison of EPDM and Silicone in Housing Materials of Polymeric Suspension Insulators (EPDM 및 실리콘 재질의 폴리머현수애자의 특성 비교)

  • In our country, the housing materials of polymeric outdoor insulators have mainly been used EPDM or silicone rubber. EPDM housing materials had been widely used in the field for the first time. The reason why silicone has the high cost of production. But recently, most of the manufacturers that newly developed polymeric insulators make its choice of silicone housing. EPDM showed a good resistance to tracking. We compared the various characteristics for EPDM and silicone insulators that have similar type and design. Silicone insulators have more performance in flashover voltage test and leakage current measurement because of a good water repellent than EPDM ones. Also, the property of EPDM compared with silicone insulators greatly decreased after aging test in combined acceleration ageing facilities for 1000 hours.

  • When insulators are operated near cement factories, some amount of cement powder may be stuck on the surface of insulators and decreases their electrical performances. Three kinds of insulators, such as, silicone EPDM and porcelain insulators, are tested in this paper. Testing Voltage of 25kV is applied to the samples, and surface leakage current is measured for 6 months after cement solvent of 10 vol% was stuck on the surface of each insulator in the laboratory. Insulation layers are cut from 3 and 6 month-aged insulators and tested for ac breakdown, impulse breakdown, contact angle. After aging, electrical properties are unchanged in silicone and EPDM insulators but show some changes in porcelain insulators.

  • In this paper, We intended to evaluate characteristics of XLPE/EPDM interface which exists in the cable joint. Because the fault was mainly occurred in this interface. We investigated breakdown characteristics of XLPE/EPDM double layered insulator as a funtion of temperature, pressure, annealing time, kinds of jointmaterial.   • This study performs a simulation for an accumulation mechanism of contaminants, which were produced in an industrial belt of inland, on the surface of insulators. From the simulation, silicon insulators presented higher accumulation than that of EPDM(Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer : EPDM) insulators on the same distance in the case of the Virgin polymer insulator, and this result presented the same result in the insulator applied in actual fields. In the case of the accumulation test for the Virgin insulator and insulators used in actual fields, it is evident that the Virgin insulator presented more accumulation than that of the insulator used in actual fields. The results can be caused by the generation of LMW (Low Molecular Weight) on the external material of polymer insulators, and the level of the accumulation can be changed according to the degree of the continuous generation of LMW.

  • This paper presents the results of power spectra using the fundamental and low frequency harmonic components of leakage current waveform to study aging on contaminated EPDM insulator(was serviced during 1997-2001, region Pohang, korea) under salt fog conditions. Experiments have been conducted in the chamber salt fog and at the 16KVrms. The salt contents adjusted as 0g,25g,50g and 75g per liter of deionized water. The onset of dry-band arcing on polymer insulators could be determined by signal processing the low frequency harmonics components. A correlation has been found between the fundamental and low harmonic components of power spectra on leakage current. Where aging could be associated with an increase in the level of both the fundamental and low frequency harmonics components of leakage current. Surface aging for contaminated EPDM insulators occurred when the fundamental component of leakage current was greater then some level On the other hand, when the polymer insulator approached failure, the fundamental component of leakage current reached relatively high values and low frequency harmonics components of the leakage current trended to decrease. The results suggest that both the fundamental and low frequency harmonics of leakage current can be used as a tool to determine both the beginning of aging and before flashover, end of life EPBM insulator in salt fog.

  • This research is about the result of leakage current waveform about the situation of surface leakage current and environmental changes(Salt fog, clean fog and rain) by EPDM polymer insulators' amount of salt. The researcher presents the result of changing about fundamental harmonic, 3rd harmonic and 5th harmonic from starting point of supplying power to flashover. In this study, researched environmental affects (clean fog, salt fog and rain) about surface aging of polymer insulators and used frequency spectrum of leakage current waveform to develop the diagnostic technique of surface aging. When amount of salt contents changed, surface aging stage and the degree of aging (distortion factor) about 3rd and 5th harmonic waveform on low frequency harmonic wave. The distortion factor which is harmonic percentage about basic harmonic is important pointer to evaluate the surface condition of polymer insulators.

  • This paper presents the results of spectrum analysis of leakage current waveforms on contaminated polymer insulators under fog conditions. This is a basic study on development of a monitoring for aging degree and surface pollution state using distortion rate(%) of 3rd and 5th harmonics according fundamental frequency[60Hz] under environment conditions. Arcing on the surface was always associated with distortion in the leakage current ; hence the low frequency components of the leakage current can be used as a means to evaluate the surface degradation. The results indicate that the distortion rate by spectrum analysis is available for the monitoring of contamination condition of EPDM Polymer insulators.

  • In the paper, we evaluated insulation evaluation of EPDM insulator used often in power distribution lines in Korea. The selected samples for our experiment were three EPDM insulators for 22.9[kV] operated for 10 years or less. Using these samples, we observed the discharge pattern through accelerating experimental and analyzed discharge quantity using fractal theory. The validity of our fractal method were discussed and life time. reliability and quantitative analysis of the insulator was conducted through the method.

  • The waveforms of the leakage currents for the surface discharge according to the degree of salt contamination and the variation of environmental condition on the EPDM polymer insulators, were shown in this paper. The variation phenomena of fundamental wave, 3rd and 5th harmonic waveforms were also shown from the beginning of the applied voltage and to the flashover voltage. To develop the technique of percentage contamination degree of EPDM polymer insulator according to the variation of environmental condition, the distortion degree of 3rd and 5th harmonic wave to the fundamental wave was utilized through the spectrum analysis for the waveforms of leakage current in the simulation of salt and fog test. The fact that distortion degree % of 3rd and 5th harmonics for fundamental wave is a necessary indicator for the assessment of contamination degree for the polymer insulators, was known.
