In these days, international construction market including construction companies has much grown due to globalization and economic boom in the mid 2000's. The size of international construction market, measured with overseas revenue of 225 construction firms, has expanded 2.7 times from 2003 to 2008 according to the ENR. However, after the global financial crisis of 2008 it has faced condition of low growth. In this research, major changes of international construction market and top contractors have been studied. In this study, changes of international construction market have been analyzed in the aspect of region and product including general buildings, transportation, petroleum, etc. Then, in order to find the changes of top contractors which obtained good accomplishment, business performance of companies have been examined by the compound annual growth rate, profit margin and international revenue by comparing the data before 2008 and after. The purpose of the study is to understand major changes of international construction market. Also, strategy changes of top contractors against market stagnation, profit depreciation, high competition have been inferred through the study. The result of the study would contribute to analyzing the strategies of construction companies in international market.

Indian construction companies have only 0.05% market share in the 3-4 trillion dollar global construction business and only two Indian construction companies figure in the ENR "Top 225 Global Contractors 2006" list. Hence, while enormous scope for growth exists, international construction experience is limited. This study explores the risks as perceived by Indian companies venturing abroad since risks in international construction differ from home market risks. Literature survey identified a number of risk factors that were evaluated by the experts, highlighting fourteen important risk factors. Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) was used to develop a hierarchical model showing the relationships between the different risk factors, thus helping to focus on the key risks for effective risk management. The study shows that poor project management is a key risk forming the hub of the system, while political instability has maximum influence. The results of the study can be used by managers to visualise the risks in perspective and prioritise the mitigation effort.

한국기업의 해외건설공사 진출은 1960년대 이후 45년간 약4,900여건, 총 1,933억불 이상의 실적을 거두어 오면서, 고용증대와 국제수지 개선 등 경제발전에 지대한 공헌을 해왔다. 그러나 해외건설 프로젝트는 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화 등 다양하고 복잡한 리스크에 노출되어 있어 국내 건설사업에 비해 수익성이 악화될 수 있는 가능성이 매우 높은 특성을 갖고 있다. 또한 소수의 악성 프로젝트에 의해서 전체 기업의 재무구조를 악화시키는 사태가 빈번히 발생하고 있는 국내 기업의 현실에서, 해외공사의 계획이나 수주 시에 양질의 프로젝트를 선별하고 그에 따라 미리 대상 프로젝트의 특성을 파악하여, 적정한 관리요소 및 전략을 수립하는 것은 매우 중요한 요소라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 해외건설공사 수익성에 영향을 미치는 인자를 도출하고 이러한 영향인자와 수익성간의 인과관계를 분석하여, 향후 프로젝트의 계획 및 수주 시 해당 프로젝트의 수익성을 미리 가늠해볼 수 있는 예측모델을 도출하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 문헌조사 및 전문가 자문을 통해 64개의 해외건설공사 수익성 영향 리스크인자를 도출하였으며, 실제 사례에 기반한 자료수집 및 통계분석을 통해 수익성 영향인자와 해외공사 수익성 성과간의 인과관계를 규명하였다. 또한 도출된 예측모델의 검증을 위해, 추가적인 15개 프로젝트에 적용하여 예측모델의 정확성을 검증하였으며, 웹 기반의 프로그램으로 예측모델을 구축하여 활용을 위한 기반을 조성하였다. 이러한 수익성 예측모델의 활용을 통해서 국내 건설업체들은 해외건설공사 진출 시 해당 프로젝트의 타당성을 사전에 확인하여 양질의 프로젝트를 선별함으로써 해외건설공사의 수익성 향상을 위한 수주 전략의 수립이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.
