Silent period(SP) is transient stops of muscle activity that are induced by mechanical or electrical stimulus and the duration of silent period is a important parameter that have been associated with symptoms of masticatory dysfunction. Muscle fatigue is induced by sustained muscular contractions. It is associated with the external manifestations as the inability to maintain a desired force output, muscular tremor, and localized pain. Muscle fatigue is a parameter that have been measured or monitored the deterioration of a performance of muscles. On the study of relationship between SP and masticatory muscle fatigue, Nagasawa suggested that SP increases up to 3 min. from the beginning of clenching when the subjects performed sustained contractions at 50% maximum clenching level. In this paper, in order to evaluate a relationship between SP and muscle fatigue, 10 SPs per 1 minute are measured at 10%, 20%, 50% maximum clenching level. We used the median frequency in order to quantify the degree of muscle fatigue. However, the results shows that the duration of silent period was not significantly affected by differing levels of muscle fatigue. Therefore, we suggest that the SP is not increased or decreased as the results of muscle fatigue, also the origin of the SP generation mechanism is discussed.
The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of taping therapy on muscle activities between the group of taping therapy treatment and control group before or after exercises. The subjects are 18 S college's healthy male students who do not have any problems in the legs and could bend the knee joint normally. Considering physique, condition of health and capacity for locomotion, 3 groups of each 6 persons for the experimentation were classified. Three groups composed of control group without taping therapy treatment for control group, group I with taping therapy treatment only before the experimentation and group II with taping therapy treatment during 24 hour. before and after the experimentation. EMG MP150 was used to evaluate the parameter of the lower leg's muscle activities the exercise before 5 min. after 10 min. and after 24 hour. for the experimentation. Compared with control group, group I and group II had more increased muscle activities in vastus lateralis and rectus femoris and was statistically significant. And group I and group II also had more increase in muscle activities than control group in vastus medialis, although there was no statistically significant. We found that taping therapy increased muscle activity positively. The application of taping therapy could be used not only for preventive effects for sports man but also therapeutic effects for general people.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of triceps surae activation during heel raise test in standing among knee flexion angles($0^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$). METHODS: Twenty healthy individuals performed unilateral plantarflexion in standing with $0^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$ knee flexion. Activity of medial gastrocnemius(MG), lateral gastrocnemius(LG), soleus(Sol) was recorded with surface electromyography(EMG). RESULT: The muscle activations induced the four different positions were compared and results showed that was significant difference MG and LG while the angle increase from $0^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$ but Sol did not show significant differences in every angle. CONCLUSION: This study suggest that $30^{\circ}C$ knee flexion is required to induce a significant mechanical disadvantage of gastrocnemius.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of muscle activation of neck, lumbar and low limb by using baby carrier with arms during walking. Methods : Twenty healthy and young females who brought up infants and had no musculoskeletal disorders of neck, lumbar and low limb were recruited for this study. They were instructed to perform muscle activation of neck, lumbar and low limb using the baby carrier with and without arms during walking. ProComp $infiniti^{TM}$ (Thought Technology Ltd., Canada) was used to measure the muscle activity of neck, lumbar and lower extremity muscles. Results : Activation of neck paraspinalis muscle was significantly increased using baby carrier with arms and there was a significant increase on erector spinae muscle activation by using anterior baby carrier. Conclusion : These results indicate that the muscle activation was changed by arms assist and the position of using baby carrier. Therefore, it could be considered relationship of muscle activation and musculoskeletal demage as carrying baby.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the lumbar erector spinea and rectus abdominis activations, according to the different gait velocities in young healthy adults. Methods: We recruited 6 young male and 10 young female (mean age=21.43 years; range 19~23) in this study. We used a wireless surface electromyogram (Telemyo 2400T G2, Noraxon, USA) and a treadmill unit for the experiment. EMG activity from the lumbar erector spinea, and rectus abdominis of the dominant side was record with surface electrodes. On different day, all subjects gaited on 2.7 km/h, 4.5 km/h, and 6.3 km/h of speed in random order. They gaited at the same velocity, three times, on the treadmill unit. To reduce fatigue, sufficient rests were given between the measurements. Results: As the gait speed increased, lumbar erector spinea and rectus abdominis activations were significantly increased (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the current study, we found lumbar erector spinea and rectus abdominis activations were changed, according to the gait velocity. We suggested that rehabilitation intervention should be focused on the exercise velocity for the patients with problem of the trunk control.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of distal movement on shoulder muscle activation during diagonal pattern of exercises. METHODS: Seventeen healthy male participants volunteered to participate. Five muscles of shoulder were investigated during standing performance of diagonal shoulder exercises with and without visual trace. Two patterns of the diagonal exercises were used as diagonal 1 flexion and extension (D1F-E), and diagonal 2 flexion and extension (D2F-E). Two way repeated measures analysis of variance was used, which the factor was the presence of distal movement and exercise variations. RESULTS: The average muscle activity values of the lower trapezius and anterior deltoid are higher with the D2F-E, compared to the D1F-E (p<.05). The distal movement effect was observed within included all muscles except the lower trapezius, which the values are significantly greater in exercise with distal movement (P<.05). All significant increase of the muscles during the exercise with distal movement condition showed over 0.9 for the observed power in present study. CONCLUSION: Present result suggested that the diagonal pattern of exercise with distal movement has additional advantages of activating the scapulothoracic muscle as well as glenohumeral muscles. In addition, the D2F-E exercise pattern is effective for activating lower trapezius and anterior deltoid muscles.
The authors performed a experimental study to evaluate the effects of masticatory muscle fatigue on tooth contact and masticatory muscle activity in 26 normal healthy women. The experimental masticatory muscle fatigue was induced by unilateral biting of 5kg force on mandibular first molar. The results were as follows : 1. The initial symptom related to muscle fatigue pain appeared in 85.19 seconds of isometric contraction and the endurance time of isometric contraction was 203.15 seconds. 2. The pain occurred more frequently in masseter region than in temporal region. In masseter pain the incidence was almost equal between both sides, whereas the temporal pain was more in contralateral side. 3. The spontaneity and the symmetry of tooth contact during maximum clenching were reduced after isometric unilateral biting. 4. After induction of experimental muscle fatigue, the EMG activities of masseter muscles of both sides and ipsilateral temporal muscle showed the tendency of decreasing activities. 5. The asymmetry indicies of masseter and temporal muscles were reduced after isometric bilateral biting.

Implanted telemetry systems provide the ability to monitor different species of animals while they move within their cages. Species monitored include mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs, primates, sheep, horses, cattle, and others. A miniature transmitter implanted in each animal measures one or more parameters. Parameters measured include arterial pressure, intra-pleural pressure, left ventricular pressure, intra-ocular pressure, bladder pressure, ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG, temperature, activity, and other parameters and transmits the data via radio frequency signals to a nearby receiver. Every conventional dedicated transmitter contains one or more sensors, cpu and battery. Due to the expected life of the battery, the measuring time is limited. To overcome these problems, electromagnetic inductive coupling based wireless power transmission technology using multiple transmit coils were proposed, with each coil having a different active area driven by the coil driver. In this research, a parallel resonance based coil driver and serial resonance based coil driver are proposed. From the experiments we see that the parallel coil driver shows better performance under a low impedance and multiple coils configuration. However, the serial coil driver is more efficient for high impedance transmit coils.
The purpose of this study were to investigate the differences between female and male basketball players in knee neuromuscular biomechanical factors during basketball rebound jump. Twelve high school female ($17.9{\pm}0.8years$) and twelve male ($19.0{\pm}1.6years$) basketball players rebound jumped for maximal vertical height to sufficiently stress the anterior cruciate ligament. Kinematic and ground reaction data were collected and combined with inverse dynamics to estimate the knee extensor and abductor torque. The EMG data from the biceps femoris and rectus femoris was used to estimate the ratio of quadriceps muscle activity. Female athletes showed more reduced knee flexion at foot contact, more increased knee abduction, extensor and abductor knee joint torque at foot contact, and quadriceps ratio at stance phase than those of male athletes. In conclusion, Female athletes showed differences in knee neuromuscular biomechanical factors than male athletes during basketball rebound jump.
Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of the different condition of leg support surface on the upper extremity and core muscle activity during the push-up exercise. Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects that were practicable push-ups were recruited in this study. Subjects were instructed the push-up exercise in the different condition of the leg support surface. Each condition of support surface was set to the high and lower, and the unstable and stable condition. Muscle activation was measured by using the surface electromyography (EMG), and recorded from the triceps brachii, serratus anterior, latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominis, abdominal external oblique, and erector spinea muscle. Results: In the results of experiments, there was no significant difference of muscle activation in upper extremity between the high unstable and high stable support surface. By contrast, muscle activation of the rectus abdominis and abdominal external oblique was significantly higher in the low unstable support surface, compared with those of the low stable support surface. It is well known that the core muscle was important to stabilization of trunk stability. Conclusion: This result demonstrates that the low and unstable support surface for the lower extremity was suited for training of core muscle for trunk stabilization during the push-up exercise.
