Numerical Study of CO Reduction Characteristics in High-temperature Air Stream Diluted with Exhaust Gas (배기가스가 혼합된 고온 공기류에서의 CO 소멸특성에 대한 수치해석 연구)

  • The CO reduction characteristics of hot air stream diluted with exhaust gas in a perfectly stirred reactor (PSR) were investigated numerically. The dilution ratio ($\Omega$), inlet temperature ($T_{in}$), and residence time ($\tau$) were considered as parameters to investigate the effects of those on the emission indices for CO and $CO_2$ (EICO and $EICO_2$). The roles of dominant reactions and the production rates of major species were analyzed. It was found from the EICO trend that the supplied CO in the air stream was consumed. The EICO increased negatively with $T_{in}$ at fixed $\tau$ regardless of $\Omega$. However, the magnitude of EICO and minimum inlet temperature for CO reduction showed complicated trend according to the variation of $\tau$. It was identified that the OH radical, generated from the reactions, $O_2+H{\leftrightarrow}O+OH$ and $2OH{\leftrightarrow}H+H_2O$, affected the CO reduction by the reaction, $CO+OH{\leftrightarrow}H+CO_2$. However, the CO emission ratio increased at sufficiently high inlet temperature range due to the thermal dissociation of $CO_2$.

Influence of Changing Combustor Pressure on Combustion Characteristics and Reaction Zone in the Partially Premixed Flame with $CH_4$, $C_2H_4$ and $C_3H_8$ (부분 예혼합 화염에서 연소실 압력이 연료별($CH_4$, $C_2H_4$, $C_3H_8$) 연소특성과 반응영역에 미치는 영향)

  • Combustion experiments were conducted at three different fuels ($CH_4$, $C_2H_4$ and $C_3H_8$) to investigate the effects of combustor pressure (30 ~ -30 kPa) on combustion charateristics and reaction zone structure. Regardless of the fuels, emission index of CO (EICO) increased with decreasing combustor pressure, and EICO of $C_2H_4$ was mostly affected by changing combustor pressure at subatmospheric pressure. In order to observe reaction zone, $OH^*$, $CH^*$ and ${C_2}^*$ chemiluminescence intensity were measured. The sequence of the chemiluminescence intensity peak position was affected by chemical characteristics of fuels rather than changing combustor pressure. The emission zone thickness of $C_2H_4$ and $C_3H_8$, defined by the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $CH^*$ intensity profile, were increased with decreasing combustor pressure. however, the thickness of $C_2H_4$ exhibited the opposite tendency due to the characteristics of the fuel as the bond structure.

Computational Study of the MILD Combustion and Pollutant Emission Characteristics in Jet Flow Field (제트 유동장에서의 마일드 연소 및 오염물질 배출특성에 관한 전산해석 연구)

  • The MILD combustion and pollutant emission characteristics were investigated computationally. The temperature of supplying air-stream and mixing rate (${\Omega}$) of exhaust gas in the air-stream were adjusted to investigate the effects of those parameters on the MILD combustion in jet flow field. The emission indices for NO (EINO) and CO (EICO) were introduced to quantify the amount of those species emitted from the combustion. The high-temperature region disappeared gradually as the mixing rate increased for fixed air-stream temperature. The EINO increased as the air-stream temperature became higher for fixed mixing rate, and the EINO decreased dramatically with increasing the mixing rate for each air-stream temperature condition. The EICO also decreased with increasing the mixing rate and it was nearly independent of air-stream temperature except for near ${\Omega}$ = 0.7. It was found that the CO supplied in the air-stream can be destroyed in the MILD combustion over the certain mixing rate.

CO Emission Characteristics in the Interacting Counterflow Methane and Hydrogen Partially Premixed Flames (상호작용하는 대향류 메탄-수소 부분예혼합화염의 CO 배출특성)

  • The CO emission characteristics of interacting hydrogen and methane partially premixed flames were numerically investigated. A counterflow geometry was introduced to establish interacting two partially premixed flames. An one-dimensional OPPDIF code was used to simulate the interacting flames. The GRI-v3.0 was used to calculate the chemical reactions. Emission index for CO(EICO) was evaluated to quantify the CO emitted from the interacting flames. The global strain rate and equivalence ratios for each flame(${\Phi}_{CH_4}$ and ${\Phi}_{H_2}$) were used as parameters to control the extent of interaction between two partially premixed flames. When ${\Phi}_{CH_4}$ was kept to stoichiometric condition and ${\Phi}_{H_2}$ was at rich condition, unburned H2 species of hydrogen flame was transported to the methane flame and affected reactions related with CO formation. When ${\Phi}_{CH_4}$ increased from a stoichiometry to rich condition while ${\Phi}_{H_2}$ was kept to stoichiometric condition, EICO increased initially, had a peak value at ${\Phi}_{CH_4}=1.5$ and decreased gradually. This could be elucidated with an analysis for the elementary reactions related with CO formation.

The Pollutant Emission Characteristics of Lean-Rich Combustion System with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (배기가스 재순환을 적용한 희박-과농 연소시스템의 공해물질 배출특성 연구)

  • In this study, the CH4/air lean-rich combustion system with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) was investigated to explore the potential for lowering pollutant emissions. To achieve this purpose, experiments of lean-rich combustion system with EGR were conducted to measure the changes in the characteristics of the pollutant emission and flame shape with various equivalence ratios and EGR rates. Here, this study was applied to the fuel distribution ratio of 3:1 for the formation of the lean and rich flames. Additionally, the results were compared with $CH_4$/air lean premixed combustion system. The results show that flame shape of lean-rich combustion system was determined by lean and rich equivalence ratios (${\Phi}_L$ and ${\Phi}_R$) and stratified flame was formed with increasing ${\Phi}_R$. According to the pollutant emission characteristics based on experimental results, the NOx and CO emission index (EINOx and EICO) decreased with increasing EGR rate. Especially, in the range needed to form a stable flame, the reduction rates of EINOx and EICO were approximately 47% and 48% for an EGR rate of 25%, global equivalence ratio of 0.85 and ${\Phi}_L$ of 0.80 compared with lean premixed combustion system (${\Phi}$ = 0.78).
