Comparison on Exhaust Gas of Heavy Duty Diesel Trucks; THC and CO Emission Affected by NOx Control Devices (EGR, SCR) (대형 경유트럭의 NOx 저감장치에 따른 배출가스 특성비교)

  • With increasing of GDP, the registration number of passenger cars has exceeded 20 million last year in Korea. Especially, the registration number of the diesel engine vehicles has been increasing. However, the WHO(World Health Organization) IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has reported that diesel engine exhaust gas is an one of HAPs, which has carcinogenic for human, and they have designated it to Group 1. To solve this problem, exhaust gas from diesel engines has to be controlled. Thus, it has been controlling by European regulatory standard in Korea. On the other hand, in order to meet the enhanced emission regulations, all manufacturing company applied $NO_x$ control device to vehicles such as EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and so on. However, these devices (EGR, SCR) were operated by difference reaction mechanism respectively, and the composition of exhaust gas would be differenced from that of them. In this study, it was conducted to evaluate variety characteristics on changing of exhaust gas composition by each $NO_x$ control device, and the heavy duty diesel trucks were chosen as experimental vehicles. From the result, it revealed that vehicles (with EGR) were discharged higher THC as 52.5% than that of others (with SCR). However, it did not followed that trend, in the case of CO; it was discharged as 57.2% lower than that of others (with SCR). In the future, these data would be used to apply to efficient $NO_x$ control device for meeting to EURO 6.

Gene Expression Profiles in Genetically Different Mice Infected with $Toxoplasma$ $gondii$: ALDH1A2, BEX2, EGR2, CCL3 and PLAU

  • $Toxoplasma$ $gondii$ can modulate host cell gene expression; however, determining gene expression levels in intermediate hosts after $T.$ $gondii$ infection is not known much. We selected 5 genes ($ALDH1A2$, $BEX2$, $CCL3$, $EGR2$ and $PLAU$) and compared the mRNA expression levels in the spleen, liver, lung and small intestine of genetically different mice infected with $T.$ $gondii$. ALDH1A2 mRNA expressions of both mouse strains were markedly increased at day 1-4 postinfection (PI) and then decreased, and its expressions in the spleen and lung were significantly higher in C57BL/6 mice than those of BALB/c mice. BEX2 and CCR3 mRNA expressions of both mouse strains were significantly increased from day 7 PI and peaked at day 15-30 PI ($P$<0.05), especially high in the spleen liver or small intestine of C57BL/6 mice. EGR2 and PLAU mRNA expressions of both mouse strains were significantly increased after infection, especially high in the spleen and liver. However, their expression patterns were varied depending on the tissue and mouse strain. Taken together, $T.$ $gondii$-susceptible C57BL/6 mice expressed higher levels of these 5 genes than did $T.$ $gondii$-resistant BALB/c mice, particularly in the spleen and liver. And ALDH1A2 and PLAU expressions were increased acutely, whereas BEX2, CCL3 and EGR2 expressions were increased lately. Thus, these demonstrate that host genetic factors exert a strong impact on the expression of these 5 genes and their expression patterns were varied depending on the gene or tissue.

  • Although combustion is essential in most energy generation processes, it is one of the major causes of air pollution. Exhaust pipes with circular fin were designed to study the effect of cooling the recirculated exhaust gases (EGR) of Diesel engines on the chemical composition of the exhaust gases and the reduction in the percentages of pollutant emissions. The gases examined in this study were oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) and carbon monoxide (CO). In addition, $O_2$ concentration in the exhaust was measured. The designs adopted in this study were about exhaust pipes with solid and hollow fins around them direct surface force measurement in water using a nano size colloidal probe technique. The direct force measurement between colloidal surfaces has been an essential topic in both theories and applications of surface chemistry. As particle size is decreased from micron size down to true Carbon nano Colloid size (<10 nm), surface forces are increasingly important. Nano particles at close proximity or high solids loading are expected to show a different behavior than what can be estimated from continuum and mean field theories. The current tools for directly measuring interaction forces such as a surface force apparatus or atomic force microscopy (AFM) are limited to particles much larger than nano size. This paper use Water and CNC fluid at normal cooling system of EGR. Experimental result showed all good agreement at Re=$2.54{\times}10^4$ by free convection and Re=$3.36{\times}10^4$ by forced air furnace.

  • Currently, due to the serious world-wide air pollution by substances emitted from vehicles, emission control is enforced more firmly and it is expected that the regulation requirements for emission will become more severe. A new concept combustion technology that can reduce the NOx and PM in relation to combustion is urgently required. Due to such social requirement, technologically advanced countries are making efforts to develop an environment-friendly vehicle engine at the nation-wide level in order to respond to the reinforced emission control. As a core combustion technology among new combustion technologies for the next generation engine, the homogenous charge compression ignition(HCCI) is expanding its application range by adopting multiple combustion mode, catalyst, direct fuel injection and partially premixed combustion. This study used a 2-staged injection method in order to apply the HCCI combustion method without significantly altering engine specifications in the aspect of multiple combustion mode and practicality by referring to the results of studies on the HCCI engine. In addition, this study confirmed the possibility of securing optimum fuel economy emission reduction in the IMEP 8bar range(which could not be achieved with existing partially premixed combustion) through forced charging, exhaust gas recirculation(EGR), compression ratio change and application of DOC catalyst.

ANALYSIS OF HCCI COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS BASED ON EXPERIMENTATION AND SIMULATIONS-INFLUENCE OF FUEL OCTANE NUMBER AND INTERNAL EGR ON COMBUSTION

  • Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion systems can be broadly divided for the process applied to 4-stroke and 2-stroke engines. The former process is often referred to as simply HCCI combustion and the latter process as Active Thermo-Atmosphere Combustion (ATAC). The region of stable engine operation tends to differ greatly between the two processes. In this study, it was shown that the HCCI combustion process of a 4-stroke engine, characterized by the occurrence of autoignition under a high compression ratio, a lean mixture and wide open throttle operation, could be simulated by operating a 2-stroke engine at a higher compression ratio. On that basis, a comparison was made of the combustion characteristics of high-compression-ratio HCCI combustion and ATAC, characterized as autoignited combustion in the presence of a large quantity of residual gas at a low compression ratio and part throttle. The results showed that one major difference between these two combustion processes was their different degrees of susceptibility to the occurrence of cool flame reactions. Compared with high-compression-ratio HCCI combustion, the ignition timing of ATAC tended not to change in relation to different fuel octane numbers. Furthermore, when internal EGR was applied to high-compression-ratio HCCI combustion, it resulted in combustion characteristics resembling ATAC. Specifically, as the internal EGR rate was increased, the ignition timing showed less change in relation to changes in the octane number and the region of stable engine operation also approached that of ATAC.

  • To protect the environment, the regulation of emissions from off-road engines which are relatively neglected, is being reinforced. This paper deals with the robust design of off-road diesel engines considering the emission characteristics. Measurements of the NOx and PM levels based on the DOE were carried out. The injector hole number, injection timing and EGR rate were selected as the control factors. The orthogonal arrays table $L_9(3^3)$ was made from 2 or 3 levels for each factor and measurements of emissions were accomplished based on the table. The small-the-better SN ratio according to the Taguchi method was evaluated. The ANOVA (analysis of variance) for the SN ratio was conducted. The injection timing on the NOx emissions and the EGR rate on the PM have the largest effect on the low-load operation condition. The confidence levels of the control factors were more than 90%.

Comparison of Riboflavin Status between Traditional Farming Women and Commercial Farming Women in Korea

  • this study was undertaken to compare the riboflavin status of rural women with different physical activity intensity and to determine factors influencing biochemical fiboflavin status. The study was carried out over three different farming seasons : planting (June), harvest(October) and interim(February) in two rural regions of Korea. One was a traditional farming region, the other a commercial farming region with heavier work intensity. Twenty women in the traditional region and eighteen women in the commercial region were involved. The intensity of physical activity was determined by a daily activity record. Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedence. Dietary riboflavin intake was measured by the food frequency method. Riboflavin biochemical status was assessed by erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity coefficient (EGR AC) and ruinary riboflavin excretion. The results from the EGR AC and urinary riboflavin excretion during the period showed the overall riboflavin status of the commercial farming women was significantly worse than that of the traditional farming women(EGR AC p<0.0001, urinary riboflavin excretion p<0.05). The traditional farming group had about 40% with risk of riboflavin deficiency, whereas the commercial farming group had about 70%. Overall mean nutrient intake was not significantly different between the two groups, however, overall mean percent lean body mass representing long term physical activity was significantly higher in the commercial farming group ( <0.005). It appears that the biochemical riboflavin status of traditional farming women was significantly influenced by riboflavin intake and crude nitrogen balance while the biochemical riboflavin status of the commercial farming women was significantly influenced by riboflavin intake and percent of lean body mass over the three seasons.   • Mucosal epithelia sense external stress signals and transmit them to the intracellular cascade responses. Ribotoxic stress-producing chemicals such as deoxynivalenol (DON) or other trichothecene mycotoxins have been linked with gastrointestinal inflammatory diseases by Fusarium-contamination. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that DON evokes the epithelial sentinel signals of RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR) and early growth response gene 1 (EGR-1), which together contribute to the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 8 (IL-8) in human intestinal epithelial cells. PKR suppression by the dominant negative PKR expression attenuated DON-stimulated interleukin-8 production. Moreover, 1L-8 transcriptional activation by DON was also reduced by PKR inhibition in the human intestinal epithelial cells. Treatment with the PKR inhibitor also suppressed EGR-1 promoter activity, mRNA and protein induction, although mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases such as extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases (ERK) 1/2, p38, c-Jun N-terminal Kinase (INK) were little affected or even enhanced in presence of a PKR inhibitor. These patterns were also compared in the EGR-1-suppressed cells, which showed much more suppressed production of 1L-8. All things taken into consideration, DON-activated sentinel signals of EGR-1 via PKR mediated interleukin-8 production in human intestinal epithelial cells, which provide insight into the possible general mechanism associated with mucosal inflammation as an intestinal toxic insult by ribotoxic trichothecene mycotoxins.

  • Three-dimensional finite-element methods(FEM) have been used to analyze the thermal stress of an exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) cooler due to thermal and pressure load. Since efficiency and capability of the heat exchanger are mainly dependent on net heat transferring area of the EGR cooler system, the tube inside the system has a numerous dimples on the surface. Thus for finite element analysis, firstly the dimple-typed tube is modeled as a plain element without the dimple, and then the equivalent thermal conductivities and elastic modulus are calculated. This work describes the numerical homogenization procedure of the dimple-typed tube and verifies the equivalent material properties by comparison of a single unit and the actual full model. Finally, the homogenization scheme presented in this study can be efficiently applied to finite element analyses for the thermal stress and deformation behavior of the EGR cooler system with the dimple-typed tube.

  • Globally, many researchers have been trying to improve the fuel economy of a vehicle for satisfying future $CO_2$ regulation and minimizing air pollution problem. For the same background, diesel engine and vehicle system optimization using simulation models have been key technologies for the improvement of vehicle system efficiency. Therefore, in this study, calibration method for the air breathing system of a WGT diesel engine using mean value model has been composed for efficient engine and vehicle optimization simulation researches. And virtual WGT performances have been calculated for a 2 cylinder downsized diesel engine system. From these researches, the calibration method for the boost pressure and EGR rate of a virtual diesel engine related with WGT performances could be composed and some of technical issue related with downsized diesel engine could be investigated.
