The EGR system has been widely used to reduce nitrogen oxides (NO$\_$x/) emission, to improve fuel economy and suppress knock by using the characteristics of charge dilution. However, as the EGR rate at a given engine operating condition increases, the combustion instability increases. The combustion instability increases cyclic variations resulting in the deterioration of engine performance and emissions. Therefore, the optimum EGR rate should be carefully determined in order to obtain the better engine performance and emissions. An experimental study has been performed to investigate the effects of EGR on combustion stability, engine performance,70x and the other exhaust emissions from 1.5 liter gasoline engine. Operating conditions are selected from the test result of the high speed and high acceleration region of SFTP mode which generates more NO$\_$x/ and needs higher engine speed compared to FTP-75 (Federal Test Procedure) mode. Engine power, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions are measured with various EGR rate. Combustion stability is analyzed by examining the variation of indicated mean effective pressure (COV$\_$imep/) and the timings of maximum pressure (P$\_$max/) location using pressure sensor. Engine performance is analyzed by investigating engine power and maximum cylinder pressure and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC)

Residual gas acts as a diluent which results in reducing the in-cylinder temperature as well as the flame speed, significantly affecting fuel economy, NOx emissions and combustion stability. Therefore it is important to determine the residual gas fraction as a function of the engine operating parameters accurately. However, the determination of the residual gas fraction is very sophisticated due to the unsteady state of induction and exhaust process. There has been little work toward the development of a generally applicable model for quantitative predictions of residual gas fraction. In this paper, a simple model for calculating the residual gas fraction in SI engines was suggested. The amount of fresh air was evaluated through AFR and fuel consumption. After this, from the intake temperature and pressure, the amount of total cylinder-charging gas was estimated. The residual gas fraction was derived by comparing the total charging and fresh air. This results coincide with measured EGR value very well.

The present study examined the possibility of NOx reduction in the high temperature industrial furnaces, duct burner of gas turbine cogeneration and two-stage gas turbine combustor. The experimental study was carried out for the non-premixed flame of second stage combustor with the variations of oxygen concentration in the hot exhaust gas of first stage combustor. It also examined the flammability range, temperature and NOx, $CO_2$, $O_2$formation in the combustor with respect to oxygen concentration in which the fuel(natural gas) is supplying into the hot exhaust gas. The results show that the inner temperature of flame reaches 1,20$0^{\circ}C$ at EGR $O_2$23% and that 15ppm of NOx at EGR $O_2$15.5% increases up to 60ppm at EGR $O_2$23%. It is believed that Fenimore's prompt NOx mechanism is more influential on the NOx formation than Zeldovich's thermal NOx mechanism does.

An experimental investigation was conducted to analyze the effects of EGR ratio on the combustion, exhaust emissions characteristics and size distributions of particulate matter in a single cylinder diesel engine with common-rail injection system fueled with biodiesel derived from soybean. In order to analyze the combustion, exhaust emissions and measurement of size distributions of particulate matter were carried out under various EGR ratio which was varied from 20~60% and the results were compared to those of results without EGR. The experimental results show that ignition delay was extended and maximum value of rate of heat release (ROHR) was decreased according to increasing of EGR ratio. In addition, oxidies of nitrogen ($NO_x$) emissions were reduced but soot emissions were increased under increasing of EGR ratio. However, under higher EGR ratio region, soot was slightly decreased. And then the particulate size distribution shows that high exhaust gas temperature restrain the formation of soluble organic fraction (SOF) which were beyond the accumulation mode (100~300nm) and lead to increase of nuclei mode particles.

EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) provides an important contribution in achieving the development targets of low fuel consumption and low exhaust emission levels on gasoline engine for hybrid vehicles while allowing stoichiometric fuelling to be retained for applications using the three-way catalysts. However, the occurrence of excessive cyclic variation with high EGR normally prevents substantial fuel economy improvements from being achieved in practice. Therefore, the optimum EGR rate in gasoline engine for hybrid vehicles should be carefully determined in order to achieve low fuel consumption and low exhaust emission. In this study, 2 liters gasoline engine with E-EGR system was used to investigate the effects of EGR with optimum EGR rate on fuel economy, combustion stability, engine performance and exhaust emissions. As the engine load becomes higher, the optimum EGR rate tends to increase. The increase in engine load and reduction in engine speed make the fuel consumption better. The fuel consumption was improved by maximum 5.5% at low speed, high load operating condition. As the simulated EGR variation on a cylinder is increased, due to the increase in cyclic variation, the fuel consumption and emissions characteristics were deteriorated simultaneously. To achieve combustion stability without a penalty in fuel consumption and emissions, the cylinder-to-cylinder variations must be maintained under 10%.
With increasing of GDP, the registration number of passenger cars has exceeded 20 million last year in Korea. Especially, the registration number of the diesel engine vehicles has been increasing. However, the WHO(World Health Organization) IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has reported that diesel engine exhaust gas is an one of HAPs, which has carcinogenic for human, and they have designated it to Group 1. To solve this problem, exhaust gas from diesel engines has to be controlled. Thus, it has been controlling by European regulatory standard in Korea. On the other hand, in order to meet the enhanced emission regulations, all manufacturing company applied $NO_x$ control device to vehicles such as EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and so on. However, these devices (EGR, SCR) were operated by difference reaction mechanism respectively, and the composition of exhaust gas would be differenced from that of them. In this study, it was conducted to evaluate variety characteristics on changing of exhaust gas composition by each $NO_x$ control device, and the heavy duty diesel trucks were chosen as experimental vehicles. From the result, it revealed that vehicles (with EGR) were discharged higher THC as 52.5% than that of others (with SCR). However, it did not followed that trend, in the case of CO; it was discharged as 57.2% lower than that of others (with SCR). In the future, these data would be used to apply to efficient $NO_x$ control device for meeting to EURO 6.

The goals of this research are to understand the $NO_x$ emission in direct injected diesel engine with premixed hydrogen fuel. Hydrogen fuel was supplied into the test engine through the intake pipe. Amount of hydrogen-supplemented fuel was 70 percent basis heating value of the total fuel. The effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on $NO_x$ emission were studied. The exhaust gas was recirculated to the intake manifold and the amount of exhaust gas was controlled by the valve. The major conclusions of this work include: (i) the tested engine was run without backfire under 70 percent hydrogen fuel supplemented; (ii) the peak cylinder pressure was decreased with increase of EGR ratio due to the decrease of oxygen concentration in an intake pipe; and (iii) $NO_x$ emission was decreased by 77% with 30% EGR ratio. Therefore, it may be concluded that EGR is effective method to lower $NO_x$ emission in hydrogen fueled diesel engine.
The premixed combustion system applying exhaust gas recirculation was investigated to achieve the low pollutant emission and the high thermal efficiency. In this study, it was studied the effects of EGR on the thermal efficiency, $NO_x$ and CO emissions with various EGR ratios and equivalence ratios. As results, when equivalence ratio was increased, thermal efficiency increased and $NO_x$ and CO concentration increased. When EGR was applied, $NO_x$ and CO concentration decreased and thermal efficiency increased. Especially, in the case of 15% of EGR ratio at 0.85 of equivalence ratio, $NO_x$ and CO concentration will be a smaller than these of a current operating condition of the boiler and thermal efficiency was about 1.7% higher.

In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated fur direct injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenated blended fuel which has seven kinds of mixed ratio. And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission have been investigated. Ethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether(EGBE) contains oxygen component 27% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of mono-ether group that the smoke emission and unburned hydrocarbons of EGBE is reduced remarkably compared with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel and cooled EGR method.

A premixed charge compression ignition engine is experimentally investigated for the reduction of NOx and smoke emissions from diesel engines. In this study, the premixed fuel is injected into the intake manifold to form homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber and then this pre-mixture is ignited by small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the premixed charge compression ignition engine, NOx and smoke concentrations of the exhaust emissions were reduced simultaneously as compared with the conventional diesel engine. But HC emission was increased with the increase of premixed ratio. Also, when EGR system was applied to the PCCI diesel engine, the effect of EGR rate on the combustion characteristics and the exhaust gas emissions was discussed.
