  • In this study, we have evaluated the effect of amplitude and frequency perturbation of EGG signal for single vowels associated with laryngeal pathology. The normal EGG signal was properly characterized by an autoregressive model which has an optimal order of ninth using the parametric method. This can be analyzed by determining the transfer function. Perturbations in the fundamental pitch and in the peak amplitude of EGG signal measured with a four-electrode system using the modulation/demodulation techniques were investigated for the purpose of developing a decision criteria for the laryngeal function analysis. The abnormal EGG signal has nonperiodic and unstable characteristics. It can be discriminated by the calculation of opening and closing time of glottis using the EGG signal. In case of normal and abnormal subjects, m$\pm$0.5*sd was discriminating line for frequency perturbation and m$\pm$2*sd for normal amplitude perturbations, respectively. Also, The normal and abnormal cases of the subjects can be discriminated effectively using the pattern of attractor derived with Hilbert transform of EGG signal.

  • Electrogastrogaphy(EGG) is the technique by which gastric myoelectrical activity is recorded noninvasively, from electrodes on the abdominal skin. Despite many attempts made over the decades, the clinical application of the EGG signal has not improved to the identification of waveform characteristics using comparison of EGG signal to be detected other EGG system. Cutaneous measurements of EGG are yet to be standardized in methods of detection and analysis. This may be responsible in part for some of the variability in the results. Thus, we develope EGG system composed of amplifiers, analysis methods, patient database or standardization. we introduce configurations of EGG system and their functions. Several important EGG parameters are introduced, including the dominant frequency and power of the EGG, the relative, period EGG-dominant frequency and power, the instability coefficient of EGG-dominant frequency and power, standard deviation, the percentage of running spectrum activity of gastric slow waves.

  • We propose a two-channel(Speech & EGG) pitch detection algorithm. The EGG signal monitors the vibratory motion of vocal folds very well. Therefore, using the EGG signal as well as speech signal, we obtain a reliable and robust pitch detection algorithm that minimizers problems occuring in the pitch detection with speech only. The proposed algorithm gives precise pitch markers that are synchronized to the speech in the time domain. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the two-channel pitch detection algorithm over the conventional method, and it can be used in obtaining reference pitch for evaluation of other pitch detection algorithms.

  • Petubation in the fundamental frequency and in the peak amplitude of the EGG signal derived with a four-electrode EGG system were investigated for the purpose of developing useful measures for the detection of layngeal pathology. The data were compared to the degree of amplitude perturbation and frequency perturbation. There was a close relation between amplitude perturbation and frequency perturbation analysis of EGG signal and degree of laryngeal pathology.

  • This study was conducted to develop an automatic egg inspection system for detecting creaked eggs based on acoustic impulse response. This system includes a sound generator, a sound sensor with signal conditioner, and a computer. The sound generator that hit the sharp of the dull edges of an egg was constructed with a ceramic ball pendulum attached to a rotary type solenoid. The signal conditioner included a pre-amplifier and a digital signal processing (DSP) board. The parameters for distinguishing cracked and normal eggs were the area, the geometric centroid and the resonance frequency of power spectrum of the acoustic signal generated. An algorithm for on-line detection of the continuous transferring eggs was developed. The performance tests resulted with 91% success rate to separate cracked and normal eggs at the rate of 1 second per an egg.

  • In this paper, a laryngeal function identification system based-on the EGG signal is proposed as the decision basis whether the laryngeal function is normal or abnormal. The normal EGG signal is approved an autoregressive model which has the optimal order of 9. It can be analized by determining the transfer function. But it is not meaningful that the determi- nation is made using the transfer function of an autoregressive model on the abnormal EGG signal. The power spectral analysis was applied to discriminate the normal or abnormal cases. The SNR of the EGG signal was enhanced by the optimal position of electrodes.

  • A nondestructive quality inspection technique using acoustic impulse response method was studied to investigate the feasibility of egg shell inspection. An experimental system was built to generate impact force, to measure the response signal and to analyze the frequency spectrum. This system includes an impulse generating unit, an egg holding seat, a microphone with preamplifier, and a digital oscilloscope connected to Personal Computer by RS-232C interface. The factors such as impulse generating method, egg holding method, and sensor location were evaluated by analyzing the power spectrum density of the measured signal. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. From the sampled eggs, the proper conditions for detecting damaged eggs were found as followings; ceramic for the impact ball material, rubber for egg seat material, 20 degrees for an impact angle of pendulum, 10mm for the distance between egg and sensor, the sharp side for impacting part, and 180 degrees for the location of sensor. 2. Examination of the Fourier transformed analysis in beth normal and damaged eggs revealed that those factors such as the resonant frequency, a number of peak frequencies and the magnitude of power spectrum were important to detect damaged eggs.

  • Electrogastrography(EGG), the cutaneous recording of the myoelectrical activity of the stomach using surface electrodes, is a non-invasive technique to detect gastric motility disorder, We developed a detection and analysis system for the EGG signal, which consists of hardware(bio-amplifier, filter) and softwere(user interface, analysis algorithm, patient database). The EGG signal was amplified and filtered by 3 channel bio-amplifiers, and simultaneously digitized and stored on IBM PC with a sampling frequency of 16 Hz. The stored EGG signal was analyzed using developed algorithm to extract clinically useful information from the signal. The developed system has tested through animal experiments, and is under clinical evaluation.

  • Electrogastrography(EGG) is a noninvasive method for measuring gastric electrical activity on the abdomen resulting from gastric muscle. EGG signals have a very low frequency range (0.0083 ~0.15 Hz) and extremely low amplitude(10~100 uV). Consequently, EGG signal is easily influenced by other noises. Both finite impulse response(FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filters need high orders or have phase distortions for passing very narrow bandwidth of the EGG signal. In this study, we decomposed EGG signals using a wavelet multiresolution method with Daubechies mother wavelet. The EGG signals were decomposed to seven levels. We reconstructed signal by summing the decomposed signals from level four to seven. To evaluate the performance of the wavelet multiresolution filter(WMF) with simulated EGG signal using two kinds of FIR and four kinds of IIR filters., we used two indices; signal to noise ratio(SNR) and reconstruction squared error(RSE). The SNR of WMF had 9.5, 6.9, and 4.7 dB bigger than that of the other filters at different noise levels, respectively. Also, The RSE of WMF had $1.22{\times}10^6, 1.16{\times}10^6, 1.02{\times}10^6$ smaller than that of the other filters at different noise levels, respectively. The WMF performed better in the SNR and RSE than two kinds of FIR and four kinds of IIR filters.
