  • During the development of hepatic encephalopathy after thioacetamide (TAA) injection to rat, EEG was recorded at two different states: without or with tactile stimulation of tail at regular intervals. Calculations based on the spectral and band analysis were used. The changes in the power spectra and bands were examined in 3 different behavioral stages: normal, mild ataxia and severe ataxia. In normal rats, the stimulation produced the increase in the power of the theta $(3.5{\sim}8\;Hz)$ and the gamma $(30{\sim}50\;Hz)$ bands. These changes could not be produced in rats with the mild and severe ataxia. The changes in the power of the theta band occurred earlier than those of the beta3 and the gamma bands in the stimulated state. Gradual decreases in the spectral power of the beta3 $(21{\sim}30\;Hz)$ and the gamma bands were correlated with the progress of the stages from normal condition to mild to severe ataxia in both unstimulated and stimulated states. The results indicate that the spectral and band analysis used in this study can quantify the severity of the neurological malfunction during HE.

  • As the consumer market for odor products grows, companies producing healthcare products are beginning to pay more attention to the emotional aspect of an odor product in order to differentiate their products from competitors. In the following research, the affective effect of odor product was investigated while focusing on relaxation and working contexts using orange and pine scents, since these are typical odors in current domestic market. Two empirical studies were carried out. First, in experiment I, 18 subjects, all of whom were university students, spent 20 minutes sitting comfortably on a sofa while electrocardiogram assessments were made. After a five-minute break, in experiment II, the same subjects were provided with both arithmetic and geometric questions and their electroencephalogram readings was recorded from eight channels. All subjects participated in three sessions - no odor, an orange scent, and then a pine scent - with a minimum time interval of 24 hours. The results show that in the context of a pine scent, both the activation ratio of subjects' parasympathetic system and those of the Sensory Motor Rhythm waves and Mid Beta waves were at the highest peak. Therefore, the pine scent helped the subjects to feel more comfortable and more focused at the same time. In other words, it gave them a state of meditated attention. In addition, it was found that the right brain was activated twice the intensity when the subjects worked through the geometric questions, whereas both sides of the brain were activated in equal magnitude during the process of arithmetic tasks. This replicates previous studies of the functional aspect of the right brain - being responsible for spatial and creative thinking.

  • This study aimed to maximize the effectiveness of motionbeat rhythm exercise on obese women and its applicability in all fields of sports. In addition, this study aimed to propose a plan to promote continuous exercise for people to incorporate as a means to improve healthy lifestyle. The results showed several effects of EEG on health promoting behaviors. Electroencephalogram (Alpha Power) of the left prefrontal cortex showed to have a significant effect on health promotion activities, with respect to stress management, in the motion beat rhythm exercise group. Considering all research findings, we found that the 8-week motion beat exercise can be used as an appropriate and effective social sport program for overweight women as it brings forth positive changes in the prefrontal cortex that maximizes the pleasantness of and interest in health promotion activities relating to stress management. Moreover, we suggest that it can be a method to create an environment for overweight people to continuously participate in exercises by providing results from fun and relaxingactivities, rather than just creating simple physical effects.

  • In this study, we compared and analyzed the performance of each Convolution Neural Network (CNN) by implementing the CNN that reflected the characteristics of the cerebral structure, in order to analyze the CNN that was used for the prediction of cybersickness, and provided the performance varying depending on characteristics of the brain. Dizziness has many causes, but the most severe symptoms are considered attributable to vestibular dysfunction associated with the brain. Brain waves serve as indicators showing the state of brain activities, and tend to exhibit differences depending on external stimulation and cerebral activities. Changes in brain waves being caused by external stimuli and cerebral activities have been proved by many studies and experiments, including the thesis of Martijn E. Wokke, Tony Ro, published in 2019. Based on such correlation, we analyzed brain wave data collected from dizziness-inducing environments and implemented the dizziness predictive artificial neural network reflecting characteristics of the cerebral structure. The results of this study are expected to provide a basis for achieving optimal performance of the CNN used in the prediction of dizziness, and for predicting and preventing the occurrence of dizziness under various virtual reality (VR) environments.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm the effect of mindfulness education on perceived stress, mindfulness, psychological well-being, and brain waves. The study used a repeated-measures design to examine 42 female university students currently enrolled in mindfulness courses. Subjects participated in the mindfulness course once a week for eight weeks, 50 minutes per session. The main outcome variables, such as perceived stress, mindfulness, and psychological well-being, were measured with a structured questionnaire and brain waves were measured with an electroencephalograph. The same variables were then measured after the completion of the eight-week course. The results demonstrate that perceived stress significantly decreased from 1.85±0.39 to 1.66±0.39 points (t=3.44, p=.001), while, on the other hand, mindfulness increased from 3.10±0.26 points to 3.19±0.32 points (t =-2.78, p=.008). There was also a significant difference in the level of autonomy, a subcategory of psychological well-being (t=-2.70, p=.010). In addition, EEG indicated significant changes in the frequencies of Theta channel 19 and Rapid Alpha channels 7 and 10. These results suggest that further studies are needed to elucidate the effects of mindfulness education through the modification of mindfulness course plans, diversification of teaching methods, and improvement in the educational environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of short-term foresters on brain waves and pulse waves. For this purpose, 484 foresters who visited the natural recreation forest located in Cheongpyeong city, Gyeonggi province, measured the before and after experiences of EEG and pulse waves, and the following results were obtained. First, foresters have been shown to be effective on concentration, brain activity, and brain stress. Second, foresters had positive effects on cardiac health and autonomic health. In other words, when various substances released from the forest come into the body through the respiratory system, it firstly affects the heart activity positively, and it seems to be able to expect various improvements by acting on the emotional side of the brain. Therefore, based on the scientific basis of the forest experience, it is expected that the experience of forests will be widely used as a guide for healthy life by creating conditions for participation by many people. In addition, the mechanism of respiration, heartbeat, and brain interaction is also possible, and various experimental studies on the forest experience in the future are important.

  • The EEG asymmetry of prefrontal lobe has been researched to analyze the affect such as depression or anxiety and the behavioral characteristics such as BIS(Behavioral Inhibition System)/BAS(Behavioral Activational System) on the basiss of alpha band. However there has been several proposals about the importance of beta asymmetry pointing out the limitation of alpha asymmetry. Here, for 44 numbers of 4-year-old children, by comparing alpha asymmetry and beta asymmetry with BIS/BAS results respectively, we propose the way to classify the characteristics of affect and behavioral trend. We also found that BIS is related with beta-asymmetry, while BAS is related with alpha-asymmetry. As for the affective trait, we use the alpha asymmetry following the other results. Our results seem to be consistent with the other results that the synapse formation of young children is more active at the hemisphere than the right hemisphere.

  • The present study is a partial extension of the Duncan-Johnson and Donchin (1979) and Soskins, Rosenfeld, and Niendam (2001) studies that found some effects of high pass filter (HPF) setting on P300 waveform. EEGs were recorded while the subjects performed a visual three-stimulus oddball task, and the Fz and Pz EEG signals were passed through 0.01 Hz, 0.3 Hz, and 1.0 Hz HPFs. P300 amplitudes at Fz and Pz were reduced at 1.0 Hz HPF compared to 0.01 Hz and 0.3 Hz HPFs. The negative peaks post P300 at Fz and Pz were not observed at 0.01 Hz HPF, but observed at 0.3 Hz and 1.0 Hz HPFs. The combination of 0.3 Hz HPF and peak-to-peak P300 measures was more useful than that of 0.01 Hz, 0.3 Hz, or 1.0 Hz HPF and baseline-to-peak P300 measures to discriminate between non-target and standard stimuli. The peak-to-peak P300 measures were more useful than the baseline-topeak P300 measures at 1.0 Hz HPF setting.

  • In this paper, we suggested the method for implementation of unsupervised nonlinear classification using Binary Harmony Search (BHS) algorithm, which is known as a optimization algorithm. Various algorithms have been suggested for classification of feature vectors from the process of machine learning for pattern recognition or EEG signal analysis processing. Supervised learning based support vector machine or fuzzy c-mean (FCM) based on unsupervised learning have been used for classification in the field. However, conventional methods were hard to apply nonlinear dataset classification or required prior information for supervised learning. We solved this problems with proposed classification method using heuristic approach which took the minimal Euclidean distance between vectors, then we assumed them as same class and the others were another class. For the comparison, we used FCM, self-organizing map (SOM) based on artificial neural network (ANN). KEEL machine learning datset was used for simulation. We concluded that proposed method was superior than other algorithms.

  • To obtain the basic data of prognosis of acute carbon monoxide(CO) intoxication, one hundred and sixteen cases of CO intoxication defined by carboxyhemoglobin(COHb) and admitted via emergency room of Yeungnam University Hospital from Oct. '85 to April' 89 have been clinically analyzed and evaluated, including delayed postanoxic encephalopathy(DPE) and the following results were obtained. 1. The ratio of male to female was 1:1.5 and mental state was drowsy mostly(26.2% of 116 cases) 2. The more disturbed the mental state, the more decreased was the arterial pH and $PaCO_2$, which may be the result of metabolic acidosis. 3. The early laboratory findings in patients of CO intoxication were as follows : leukocytosis-65.5%, increase of hematocrit-23.3%, hyperglycemia-19.8%, increase of GPT-19.8% increase of creatinine-0.9%, and glucosuria-12.1%. 4. The early findings of EKG were abnormal in 35.3% : change of rhythm-25.0%, abnormal ST segment-15.5% (change of rhythm and abonormal ST segment-5.2%) but the conduction disorder was not present. 5. The abnormal EEG above mild degree was 93.1%, of which moderate was most frequent(80.2%). 6. The incidence of DPE was 7.8% among all admitted CO patients. DPE cases had long duration of exposure time(8 hours), severe leukocytosis(20,000) and an abnormal EEG(MA).
