Micro-hole drilling (holes less than 0.5 mm in diameter with aspect ratio larger than 10) is recently having more attention in a wide spectrum of precision production industries. Alternative methods such as EDM. laser drilling, etc. can sometimes replace the mechanical micro-hole drilling but are not acceptable in PCB manufacture because of the inferior hole quality and accuracy. The major difficulties in micro-hole drilling are related to small signal to noise ratios, wandering motions of the inlet stage, high aspect ratios, high temperatures and so forth. Of all the difficulties. the most undesirable one is the increase of drilling force as the drill proceeds deeper into the hole. This is caused mainly from the chip effects. Peck-drilling is thus widely used for deep hole drilling despite that it suffers from low productivity. In the paper, a method of cutting force regulation is proposed to achieve continuous drilling. A PD and a sliding mode control algorithms were implemented through controlling the spindle rotating frequency. Experimental results show that the sliding mode control reduces the nominal cutting force and the variation of the cutting force better than the PD control. The advantages of the regulation, such as increase of drill life, fast stabilization of a wandering motion, and the precise positioning of the hole are verified in experiment.

A proportional plus derivative (PD) and a sliding modecontrol algorithm will be implemented for controlling the spinle rotational frequeency. Experimental results will show that sliding mode control reduces the nominal cutting force and its variation better than the PD control, resulting in a number of advantages such as an increase in drill life, fast stabilization of the wandering motion, and precise positioning of the hole.
This paper describes the machining characteristics of the MoSi$_2$-based composites by electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. MoSi$_2$-based composites has been developed in new materials for jet engine of supersonic-speed airplanes and gas turbine for high- temperature generator. By combining a nonconducting ceramics with more conducting ceramic it was possible to raise the electrical conductivity. In drilling by EDM, the dielectric flushed down the interior of the rotating tube electrode, in order to facilitate the removal of machining debris from the hole. Various metal-coated tubular electrodes of which core are copper and brass are used to know the effect of coating material on machinability of ED drilling.
In this paper, a pyrex glass is machined using Electric Discharge Machining. In order to fabricate the desired shape, the process conditions are optimized appropriatley. This paper shows that the applied voltage and the concentration of electrolytic solution significantly affect the size and shape of the hole in the pyrex glass. As the applied voltage grows, the size of the hole increases but the shape is little affected.
This paper describes a micro electrical discharge machining (MEDM) technique that uses an insulated tool in combination with ultrasonic vibration to drill micro holes. As the machining depth becomes deeper, the dispersion of debris and circulation of the dielectric fluid are difficult to occur. Consequently, machining becomes unstable in the machining region and unnecessary electrochemical dissolution and secondary discharge sparking occur at the tool side face. To reduce the amount of unnecessary side machining, an insulated tool was used. Ultrasonic vibration was applied to the MEDM work fluid to better remove debris. Through these methods, a $1000\;{\mu}m$ thick stainless steel plate was machined by using a $73\;{\mu}m$ diameter electrode. The diameters of the hole entrance and exit were $96\;{\mu}m$ and $88\;{\mu}m$, respectively. It took only 351s to completely drill one hole.
Titanium alloys are extensively used in high-temperature applications due to their excellent high strength and corrosion resistance properties. However, titanium alloys are problematic because they tend to be extremely difficult-to-cut material. In this paper, the powder synthesis, spark plasma sintering (SPS), bulk material characteristics and machinability test of hybrid $Ti_2AlC$ ceramic bulk materials were systematically examined. The bulk samples mainly consisted of $Ti_2AlC$ materials with density close to theoretical value were synthesized by a SPS method. Random orientation and good crystallization of the $Ti_2AlC$ was observed at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 10 min under SPS sintering conditions. Scanning electron microscopy results indicated a homogeneous distribution and nano-laminated structure of $Ti_2AlC$ MAX phase. The hardness and electrical conductivity of $Ti_2AlC$ were higher than that of Ti 6242 alloy at sintering temperature of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$. Consequently, the machinability of the hybrid $Ti_2AlC$ bulk materials is better than that of the Ti 6242 alloy for micro-EDM process of micro-hole shape workpiece.
This paper describes the machining characteristics of the MoSi$_2$--based composites through the process of electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. In addition to hardness characteristics, microstructures of Nb/MoSi$_2$laminate composites were evaluated from the variation of fabricating conditions, such as preparation temperature, applied pressure, and pressure holding time. MoSi$_2$-based composites have been developed in new materials for jet engines of supersonic-speed airplanes and gas turbines for high-temperature generators. These high performance engines may require new hard materials with high strength and high temperature-resistance. Also, with the exception of grinding, traditional machining methods are not applicable to these new materials. Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a thermal process that utilizes a spark discharge to melt a conductive material. The tool electrode is almost -unloaded, because there is n direct contact between the tool electrode and the work piece. By combining a non-conducting ceramic with more conducting ceramic, it was possible to raise the electrical conductivity. From experimental results, it was found that the lamination from Nb sheet and MoSi$_2$ powder was an excellent strategy to improve hardness characteristics of monolithic MoSi$_2$. However, interfacial reaction products, like (Nb, Mo)SiO$_2$and Nb$_2$Si$_3$formed at the interface of Nb/MoSi$_2$, and increased with fabricating temperature. MoSi$_2$composites, with which a hole drilling was not possible through the conventional machining process, enhanced the capacity of ED-drilling by adding MbSi$_2$, relative to that of SiC or ZrO$_2$reinforcements.
In this study, a simple and effective method was proposed to minimize electrolytic corrosion on the workpiece during ED-drilling using water as a working fluid. The adhesion of a cover plate onto the surface of the workpiece was greatly effective for suppressing electrolytic corrosion during ED-drilling. The experiment revealed that the adhesion of the cover plate prevented corrosion without causing significant changes in machining characteristics. Using the machining method proposed in this paper, electrolytic-corrosion-free holes can be machined without change in the machinery system. By using corrosion-free hole as a start hole for wire EDM, a lead frame die with high quality was fabricated successfully.
With the development of micro machining, it becomes an important part to fabricate an electrode which has tens of ${\mu}m$ or less. There are two methods to get a narrow hole; non-contact type such as EDM(Electro-discharge machining) and contact type such as punching. A punch which has a tapered shape with a cylindrical tip is fabricated in this paper. To make this punch, a method which was used to fabricate a cylindrical shape by electrochemical process was applied. The control factors for the shape and their limits are verified through an experiment.
