  • Purpose: This study examines some successful and failed cases of Korean private universities' profitable business and explores the desirable economic value and direction of their profitable business business operations with a view to shedding light on some clues conducive to their financial health and quality education. Research design, data and methodology: This study reviews news articles, reports and literature to find out Korean universities' financial condition and examines some successful and failed examples of their corporations' profit-making business operations to suggest a direction. Results: Private universities suffer declining enrollments and/or tuition freeze but they lack in making efforts to secure financial health. The reviewed examples of private universities' profit-making business operations suggest both universities and their corporations should first assume the public accountability prior to engaging in diverse business activities. Conclusions: First, to remain financially healthy, university corporations should exert themselves to transform their low-profit-margin lands and buildings into high-profit-margin businesses and to credit the realized income to their school-expense accounts. And, the ultimate purpose of universities' profit-making business operations is to realize a decent income without prejudice to their public accountability for the country and community, while forging a virtuous cycle by investing the income for the betterment of their educational quality and competitiveness.

  • Purpose - This study analyzes the effect of sellers' dishonesty on various market outcomes such as seller profit, buyer profit, and market welfare, through precisely measuring the level of sellers' information disclosure and its economic impacts. As an explicit observation of sellers' dishonesty is not easy in most other settings, this study is expected to suggest unique and meaningful implications on the effect of sellers' incomplete information disclosure to researchers, managers, and policy makers. Design/methodology/approach - In order to precisely measure the level of sellers' dishonesty under information asymmetry, this study analyzes the data from an incentive-based economic experiment using z-Tree software. This experimental method enables us to focus on the strategic interactions among participants, observe the integrity of seller's information disclosure, and reproduce real market situations. Findings - The analysis of sellers' dishonesty has provided the following important and counterintuitive findings about the reality of buyer-seller interactions under information asymmetry. First, sellers' lies do not affect seller profit even when they are very intensive. Second, sellers' dishonesty negatively affects buyer profit and the entire market welfare. Third, a seller's quality claim has a positive effect on the seller profit only when a seller is being honest. Research implications or Originality - This study analyzes sellers' dishonesty using incentive-based economic experiment using z-Tree software which provides a straightforward examination on dishonest behavior of sellers, that is not readily available with other types of observational or experimental data.

  • IMO adopted ' International Convention for The Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments ' on February 13th 2004. According to this convention, a ballast water treatment system should be installed in all ships obligatorily up to a standard date. When the system is installed, economic propriety should be considered. The economic propriety analysis examines the profit of a relevant project which can be presented by a equation, (Profit) = (income) - (expense) - (tax). However, the ballast water system is not for the profit during the life cycle but for the satisfaction of the regulation. Therefore, the expense should be minimum against the profit. This study presents the LCC(Life-Cycle Cost) analysis for economic evaluation of several ballast water system of foreign products.

  • This study is aimed to analyze the economic feasibility of yellowtail culture using the copper alloy net cage in Gyeongsangbuk-do. First of all, in order to evaluate the copper alloy net cage on yellowtail culture, I review the trend on the yellowtail culture industry and research the concept of copper alloy net cage. The copper-alloy net cage is now recognized as an advantages of its system stability, recycling, antibiosis and food safety. The results were summarized as follows: first, there was significant meaning of the profit model of yellowtail culture by the price difference. Second, I analyzed in the economic feasibility of yellowtail culture using the copper alloy net cage, internal rate of return (IRR) was 51.58%, a benefit-cost ratio was shown to be 2.27 and net present value (NPV) was 1,087,337 thousand won, which indicates the economic feasibility of yellowtail culture using the copper alloy net cage is profitable. Finally, in order to improve the economic valuation, it is necessary to focus more on the developing of technology and cost reduction strategy on the copper alloy net cage.

  • In this paper the economic value of weather forecasts is valuated for profit-oriented enterprise decision-making situations. Value is estimated in terms of monetary profits (or benefits) resulted from the forecast user's decision under the specific payoff structure, which is represented by a profit/loss ratio model combined with a decision function and a value score (VS). The forecast user determines a business-related decision based on the probabilistic forecast, the user's subjective reliability of the forecasts, and the payoff structure specific to the user's business environment. The VS curve for a meteorological forecast is specified by a function of the various profit/loss ratios, providing the scaled economic value relative to the value of a perfect forecast. The proposed valuation method based on the profit/loss ratio model and the VS is adapted for hypothetical sets of forecasts and verified for site-specific probability of precipitation forecast of 12 hour and 24 hour-lead time, which is generated from Korea meteorological administration (KMA). The application results show that forecast information with shorter lead time can provide the decision-makers with great benefits and there are ranges of profit/loss ratios in which high subjective reliability of the given forecast is preferred.

  • For situations where there are several markets for a product with different profit/cost structures, an economic variables sampling plan is developed for determining the market to ship the lots to. It is assumed that the quality characteristic X is normally distributed with known variability and unknown mean having a normal prior distribution. Profit models are constructed which involve four profit/cost components ; profit from a conforming item, inspection cost, replacement cost, and cost from an accepted nonconforming item. Methods of finding optimal sampling plan are presented and a numerical example is given.

  • The capital cost of the company is one that must be paid to the money owner as the price by using the money. The capital cost according to the source of money supply can be estimated by the expected profit rate undertaken by the use of the capital. But in the area of pre-existent economic evaluation, the evaluation of the company investment has been treated by the profit rate of the capital after considering the repayment conditions of the other's money or the interest. Thus in this study, in case the company makes an investment on various kinds of the capital at the same time, not make use of the capital as a one source, the economic evaluation of an investment should be handled by taking the weighted average cost of capital into consideration in proportion to the constitution of the capital cost by the sources of money supply, Especially, as the cost of the private money is very much connected with the profit rate through the stock market, the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) will be applied. This kind of economic evaluation method can be said to have much to do with the Economic Value Added : EVA) as well as to be highly thought as a standard to estimate the company' value recently To certify the usefulness of this approach, the case study of the output of the capital cost will be made for the purse of the economic evaluation of the alternative investment by using the financial statements of a motor company H.

  • In fisheries, as well as in other natural resource-based industries, there is difference between profit and rent. The former is a basic indicator for gauging the business performance of firms, while the latter is for the evaluation of the contribution of resources and industry to economic welfare. Put simply, resource economists are mainly concerned about rent, including pure resource rent and producer surplus (intra-marginal rent [IMR]). In other hand, business economists are mainly concerned about the profitability of the firms comprising the industry. In the academic literature, there are not always clear definitions of the profit and rent concepts and their use in actual analyses. This article will mainly discuss and clarify differences and similarities in profit and rent concepts. In the classical fisheries economic model with one-dimensional homogenous effort and a constant cost per unit of effort, no rent exists in open-access equilibrium. A simple change in this model, for example by introducing heterogeneous effort, opens it to the existence of rent, specifically IMR, at open-access equilibrium. We estimated resource rent and profit from the data using SNA(system of national accounts) and accounting data methods. RR(resource rent) is composed of value-added, compensation of employees, consumption of fixed capital and normal profit in SNA. RR(resource rent) is composed of EBT, Depreciation of fishing rights, financial costs of fishing rights and calculated interests on equity in accounting data methods. We found that the result of two methods is equal. RR is composed of excess profit, rent and interest expenses. In Korea, the magnitude of RR and profit is not different significantly.

  • This paper empirically analyses the effect of labor union on firm's profit rate in Korea. For this purpose a panel data set has been constructed for the period of 1990-2009 using "TS2000", and the data set has been subdivided into two: one is the 'non-variant group' in which firm's union status has not changed, and the other is 'variant group' in which firm's union status has changed from non-union to union during the sample period. It has been found that for 'non-variant group' there is no significant union effect on profit rate. However, for 'variant group' the presence of union has been found to decrease firm' profit rate in terms of return on equity.
