Despite the social interest in eBook and its advantages, as a result of each industry using different document formats, it is difficult to exchange or share eBook contents. And this hindered the activation of eBook market. The U.S. and Japan have realized the importance of setting a standard for eBook document format and have established eBook standard with government agencies and related industries and in Korea, also, through Working Group for Standardization Committee of EBK, eBook industry standard, EBKS, was established. EBKS provides more advantages than HTML or PDF and the basic format is XML. The objective of EBKS is exact exchange of eBook content, reflection of characteristics of Korean publication environment, simplicity in creating, and convertibility with other standards. Meanwhile, in the DTD aspect, EBKS includes static document structure, extension mechanism, vertical writing, multi-column editing and reflection on the characteristics of Korean and proverbs. For exchanging style, content and style are separated using XSL-FO and XSL-FO is recommended for printing. Also, EBKS metadata is composed of do-metadata that does not use qualifier and x-metadata for extension to provide easiness in usage and ability to exchange and convert.

한국전자책문서표준 EBKS(Electronic Book of Korea Standard) 1.0은 국내 전자책산업의 활성화를 목적으로 제정된 산업표준으로서 한국전자출편헙회의 지원아래 지난 2001년 7월 제정된 바 있다. 표준 제정이후, 전자책 업계에서는 EBKS 사용시 나타나는 문제점 및 여러 가지 개선사항을 요구하였다. 또한 빠르게 발전하는 멀티미디어 산업의 특성상 변화된 정보를 표준에서 수용해야할 필요성이 대두되었다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 EBKS 1.0 DTD의 문제점을 해결하고 새로운 요소 정의 및 구조를 재정의 하였다. 이를 통하여 표준 전자책 작성시 보다 명확한 구조와 의미정보, 그리고 추가된 멀티미디어 요소를 표현할 수 있도록 하였다.

전자책이란 책의 내용을 디지털 형태로 가공, 저장한 출판물을 의미한다. 인터넷의 급속한 확산에 따른 디지털 컨텐츠 시장의 급성장 속에서 전자책 서비스는 전세계적으로 많은 관심을 집중시키고 있다. BSP 들의 각기 다른 전자책 문서 포멧의 사용에 따라 전자책 컨텐츠의 교환 및 공유가 어렵게 되자 미국과 일본에 이어 한국에서도 2001년 한국전자책문서표준(EBKS)이 한국전자책 컨소시엄(EBK)에 의해 제정되었다. 한국전자책문서표준은 OEB(미국전자책표준안), JepaX(일본전자책표준안)와는 달리 고정된 문서의 구조를 정의하여 전자책 컨텐츠의 교환을 보장하고 있으며, XML을 기본으로 하여 기존의 HTML, PDF 방식의 전자책의 단점을 극복하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 한국전자책 문서표준(EBKS)을 기반으로 웹 상에서 유연하게 서비스가 가능한 전자책의 모델을 제시하고 구현된 전자책을 소개한다.

전자책에 대한 사회적인 관심과 다양한 장점에도 불구하고 현재 상이한 전자책 문서 포맷을 사용한 결과 전자책 컨텐츠에 대한 교환 및 공유를 어렵게 하여 결과적으로 전자책의 시장 활성화를 가로막는 가장 큰 장애가 되고 있다. 미국과 일본에서는 이미 관련 표준안을 제정한 바 있으며, 한국에서도 2001년 한국전자책 컨소시엄(EBH의 표준화 분과위원회를 통하여 전자책 산업 표준인 한국전자책문서표준(EBKS)을 제정하였다. 한국에서의 전자책 표준 EBKS는 HTML 및 PDF보다 다양한 장점을 제공하는 XML을 기반으로, 전자책 컨텐츠에 대한 정확한 교환 한국출판환경의 특징 반영, 생성 용이성, 관련 표준과의 호환성 제공 등을 기본 방향으로 한다. 한편 EBKS는 DTD 측면에서 고정된 문서구조, 확장메커니즘 제공, 세로 쓰기 다단 편집 그리고 한글 및 고어 특성 반영 등과 같은 특징을 포함하며, 스타일의 경우 교환을 위해서는 XSL-FO를 이용하여 컨텐츠와 스타일을 분리하고 있으며, 출력을 위해서는 XSL-FO를 권고한다. 그리고 EBKS 메타데이터는 사용의 용이성 교환 및 호환성 등을 제공하기 위하여 한정어(qualifier)를 사용하지 않는 dc-metadata와 확장을 위한 x-metadata로 구성된다. 한편 본 논문에서는 이러한 EBKS의 활용예로 XSL-FO를 이용한 전자책 컨텐츠에 대한 정교한 출력 결과를 제시한다.

In this paper, we have developed an E-book reader for EBKS XML documents on the embedded Linux environment. This reader operated on a Linux target board parses the EBKS XML documents using the Qt SAX interface and displays the parsed pages through the QWS (Qt Windows System) which is a cross-platform windows toolkit. This reader can be easily and rapidly developed on Linux as well as MS windows and requires less memory than DOM interfaces because it parses with SAX interface.

The U.S., Japan and Korea have realized the importance of establishing standards for eBook document formats and with government bodies, related industries and academic circles, OEB PS, JepaX and EBKS were established. However, compared to OEB of the U.S. and JepaX of Japan, EBKS contains different objective for establishment and different structures. As a result, for converting between documents of different standards, exact analysis of the document structures are called for and minimization of information loss when actually converting documents is required. Therefore, a method for explicit exchange between documents of different standards minimizing document structure is proposed and examples are looked at. As a result, in this paper, conversion possibilities between EBKS and OEB/JepaX are introduced and the result can be applied to cases when exchanging eBook standards and other formats.

Generally, a paper book that is digitalized or a method of giving information to user in a form of paper book after digitalization is called ebook. Due to the rapid spread of internet and development of digital information technology, ebook has become an important issue globally. Not only can ebook send information efficiently but the price is low and compared to paper books it is more effective in sending information by using technologies like multimedia. However, ebook markets have problems to grow because there are different ebook formats. In this study, we will explain about the development of Electronic Book of Korea Standard(EBKS) to solve the problems. The purpose of EBKS is the exact exchange for ebook contents. To archive this purpose, we define the explict logical structure for documents and recommend metadata for doemetic enviroments and XSL-FO to provide high-quality layout. We expect that the establishment of EBKS will greatly contribute to growth of ebook markets by preventing the duplicable investment for contents and technologies.

종이책의 디지털 형태인 전자책은 종이책에 비해 인쇄와 유통, 저장 관리가 효율적이고, 인터랙티브한 멀티미디어 정보 표현 등이 가능한 장점을 지니고 있기 때문에 향후 시장이 급성장할 것으로 예측되며, 현재 전자책 시장의 선결 조건인 전자책 문서 표준 및 저작권, 단말기의 해상도 문제 등이 하나씩 해결되어 가고 있다. 그러나 아직까지 전자책의 활성화를 위한 전자책 컨텐츠의 숫자가 많이 부족한 현실이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 전자책 컨텐츠를 확대하기 위하여 기존의 종이책으로 작성된 저작물을 전자책으로 변환하는 기법에 대해 연구한다. 특히 기존 종이책을 저작하는 문서 도구 중에서 가장 대중적이고 사용하기 쉬운 HWP문서와 EBKS 전자책 문서 표준간의 변환 기법에 대해 연구한다. 이 변환 기법은 단순히 HWP 환경에서만 적용가능한 것이 아니라 Quark이나 MS-WORD등의 다른 문서 저작도구에서도 사용가능한 일반적인 방법이다.

EBKS(Electronic Book of Korea Standard) 1.0 which was established in July 2001 passed the industry standard deliberation of agency for technology and standards of Korea industry in July 2002. EBKS is now established as KS X6100 representing the Korea standard of electronic book of Korea. Therefore, Conformance test and certification procedure is required whether electronic books and documents which follow KS X 6100 are conform to specification of the standard. In the paper, we define conformance clause which is a basis for conformance test and standard electronic book schema. As a result, electronic book writers can produce more conformable documents to the specification and goal of electronic book standard by using the conformance clause, and service provider can effectively perform the conformance test by using standard electronic book schema.

This paper is to develop metadata format for eBook document standard at Korea. Metadata formats of OEBF, JepaX and AAP were compared and analyzed on the criteria such as purpose, basic elements, characteristics, compatibility, extensibility and convertibility. EBKS metadata format based on Dublin Core was developed in terms of easy to use, resources descriptions and discovery, extensibility and compatibility between other metadata formats such as MARC and Dublin Core. Finally, research and revision direction of the eBook document standard were proposed for the future study.
