Purpose : We aimed to compare the clinical features and antibiotic resistance of urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by pathogens other than E. coli (non-E. coli) with UTI caused by E. coli in children. Methods : We enrolled patients with culture-proven UTI, who were admitted to the study hospital from September 2008 to August 2009. We investigated clinical data of patients with UTI and antibiotic resistance of isolated strains. For comparison, patients were divided according by results of the urine culture into E. coli and non-E. coli UTI groups. Results : A total of 84 patients participated in this study. Twenty one cases (25.0%) were caused by non-E. coli pathogens. Frequency of non-E. coli UTI differed according to age and sex: 'male <6 months', 10.5%; 'male ${\geq}$6 months', 50.0%; 'female <6 months', 43.7%; and 'female ${\geq}$6 months', 25.0% (P=0.014). More patients who received previous antibiotic treatment (P=0.017), but fewer patients who showed hematuria (P=0.014) were included in the non-E. coli UTI group than in the E. coli UTI group. Comparison of antibiotic resistance showed that the non-E. coli UTI group possessed more strains that were resistant to cefazolin, cefotaxime, imipenem, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMZ) and tetracycline than the E. coli UTI group (P<0.05). Conclusion : Increased incidence, different distribution by age and sex, and high antibiotic resistance of non-E. coli UTI should be considered in selection of empirical antibiotics for treatment of UTI in children.

The purpose of this study is identifying variables that affect to learners' preference toward specific e-learning programs, using an exploratory factor analysis(EFA) method. We extract common factors that explain the correlations among variables. In the result, 8 factors were identified as main influential factors: e-learning program design(1st factor), the purpose of e-learning use(2nd factor), social and cultural issues(3rd factor), demographics(4th factor), organizational needs(5th factor), impacts of e-learning(6th factor), e-learning management(7th factor), and technical issue(8th factor).
Objective : Cancer-testis (CT) genes are considered promising candidates for immunotherapeutic approaches. The aim of this study was to investigate which CT genes should be targeted in immunotherapy for brain tumors. Methods : We investigated the expression of 6 CT genes (MAGE-E1, SOX-6, SCP-1, SSX-2, SSX-4, and HOMTES-85) using reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction in 26 meningiomas and 32 other various brain tumor specimens, obtained from the patients during tumor surgery from 2000 to 2005. Results : The most frequently expressed CT genes of meningiomas were MAGE-E1, which were found in 22/26 (85%) meningioma samples, followed by SOX-6 (9/26 or 35%). Glioblastomas were most frequently expressed SOX-6 (6/7 or 86%), MAGE-E1 (5/7 or 71%), followed by SSX-2 (2/7 or 29%) and SCP-1 (1/7 or 14%). However, 4 astrocytomas, 3 anaplastic astrocytomas, and 3 oligodendroglial tumors only expressed MAGE-E1 and SOX-6. Schwannomas also expressed SOX-6 (5/6 or 83%), MAGE-E1 (4/6 or 67%), and SCP-1 (2/6 or 33%). Conclusion : The data presented here suggest that MAGE-E1 and SOX-6 genes are expressed in a high percentage of human central nervous system tumors, which implies the CT genes could be the potential targets of immunotherapy for human central nervous system tumors.

The inhibitory effect of the food processing agent on growth of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Enteritidis, and Listeria monocytogenes was performed with hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid, and combination of hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid. The minimun inhibitory concentration (MIC) of hydrogen peroxide in E coli O157:H7 was 100 ppm at pH 5.0, 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0, while in Listeria monocytogenes 25 ppm at PH 5.5, 6.0 and 50 ppm at PH 6.5, 75ppm at pH 7.0. MIC of lactic acid in E coli O157:H7 was 2500 ppm at pH 5.0, 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0. MIC of lactic acid in S. Enteritidis was 1250 ppm at pH 5.0, 2500 ppm at pH 5.5, 6.0, 5.5 and 7.0, while in L monocytogenes 625 ppm at pH 5.5 and 125 ppm at pH 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0. MIC of combined hydrogen Peroxide and lactic acid in E. coli O157:H7, S. Enteritidis, and L. monocytogenes was 75 ppm of hydrogen peroxide with 2500 ppm of lactic acid at pH 6.5. The correlations between MICs of hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid in E. coli O157:H7, S. Enteritidis and L. monocytogene were obtained through the coefficient of $determination(R^2)$. $R^2$ value were 0.9994, 0.9935 and 0.9283, respectively. The inhibitory effect of hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid in E. coli O157:H7, S. Enteritidis and L. monocytogenes could be confirmed from the result of this experiment. Therefore, it was expected that the food process would increase or maintain by using lactic acid together with hydrogen peroxide.
Seasonal occurrence of the egg parasitoid of bugs, Ooencyrtus nezarae (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), was monitored at soybean fields and university campus using traps baited with aggregation pheromone of bean bug, Riptortus clavatus, in Jinju, Gyeongnam province, Korea. The female O. nezarae captured at university campus in 2003 and 2004 was 317.5 and 103.4 times as many as males, respectively, and it was 12.6 times at soybean field in 2004. The female began to occur from late August, showing its peak around September 20 at soybean field in 2004. At university campus in 2003 and 2004, the female began to occur from mid or late August, and showed its peak early or mid September. At the two monitoring sites the catches of female sharply declined after October The E2HZ3H only showed attractiveness to O. nezarae, among three components of the aggregation pheromone of bean bug, (E)-2-hexenyl (Z)-3-hexenoate (E2HZ3H), (E)-2-hexenyl (E)-2-hexenoate (E2HE2H), and myristyl isobutyrate (MI). A mixture in a ratio of 20:20:10 or 16.7:16.7:16.7 of E2HZ3H:E2HE2H:MI attracted significantly more females than the mixture of 7:36:7 ratio did. This higher attractiveness of the former two blends may be attributed to the higher amounts of E2HZ3H in the blends.
Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of female death. Viral oncoproteins E6 and E7 are selectively retained and expressed in carcinoma cells infected with HPV (Human pa pilloma virus) type 16 and cooperated in immotalization and transformation of primary keratinocyte. E6 and E7 oncoproteins interfere the functions of tumor suppressor proteins p53 and retinoblasoma protein (pRb), respectively. Among a lots of natural products, Mentha arvensis Linne var.piperascens have inhibitory effects on bindings between E6 oncoprotein and tumor suppressor p53, E3 ubiqutin- protein ligase (E6AP). HPV oncoprotein inhibitors from Mentha piperita L. were isolated by solvent partition and column chromatography (Silica gel, RP-18) and inhibitory compounds were finally purified by HPLC using an ELISA screening system based on binding between E6 and E6AP. The aim of this study is to identify the structure of inhibitory compounds and to investigate whether these compounds have inhibitory effects on functions of E6 oncoprotein. We investigated whether caffeic acid methyl ester (CAM) extracted from Mentha piperita L. could inhibit the function of E6 oncoprotein. CAM inhibited the in vitro binding of E6 and E6AP which are essential for the binding and degradation of the tumor suppressor p53 and also inhibited the proliferation of human cervical cancer cell lines (SiHa and CaSKi) in a dose response manner. These results suggest that CAM inhibited the function of E6 oncoprotein, suggesting that it can be used as a potential drug for the treatment of cervical cancers infected with HPV.
KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) is at present preparing a preliminary performance assessment to set up the HLW disposal concept of Korea. The solubility of the radionuclides contained in HLW is necessary as a source term in order to predict their potential migration in both the near and far fields. The solubility of actinides (Th, Am, U, Np and Pu) for a reference deep groundwater of Korea has been calculated using a geochemical code with thermodynamic data selected by a peer review of existing thermodynamic databases and literature. The solubilities from the experimental study and/or field observations from natural analogue studies are compared. The sensitivity of solubility to the variability of three main parameters of groundwater (pH, Eh, and carbonate concentration) is also investigated. The results of the sensitivity analysis show that the solubility of actinides strongly depends on the parameters considered. Within the range of parameter values studied (pH=7 to 10, Eh=-0.4 to -0.1V, and carbonate concentration=1.E-5 to 1.E-2 mol/L), the solubility of each actinide exists between 1.4E-10 and 1.6E-6 mol/L for Am, 4.9E-9 and 2.8E-6 mol/L for Th, 3.2E-9 and 5.7E-4 mol/L for U, 1.1E-9 and 1.0E-7 mol/L for Np, and 4.0E-11 and 2.8E-6 mol/L for Pu, respectively.
Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) have emerged as important healthcare-associated infection since last two decades. ChromID VRE agar (cIDVA) is useful for VRE rectal swab screening. We investigated all VRE were isolated on the cIDVA. A total of 363 rectal swabs of 85 patients to test VRE screening were inoculated into bile-esculin (B-E) broth with $6{\mu}g/mL$ vancomycin. After 24 hours incubation, we subcultured B-E broths were changed to black onto cIDVA. All isolates were identified by the MICROSCAN and VITEK2. The vanA gene and vancomycin minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) were detected by PCR and E-test respectively. 277 E. faecium (84.7%), 16 E. faecalis (4.9%), 25 E. avium (7.6%), 8 E. gallinarum (2.4%) and 1 E. raffinosus (0.3%) were isolated. 10.3% of VRE detected on cIDVA were other than E. faecium and E. faecalis that presented various color from colorless to pale violet. All isolates contained vanA and vancomycin MIC were > $256{\mu}g/mL$. VRE isolates other than E. faecium and E. faecalis should be objective to the contact precautions for healthcare-associated infection control if they possess vanA gene. Due to emerging enterococci carrying vanA such as E. avium, E. gallinarum, and E. raffinosus, VRE surveillance should be expanded to all isolates on chromogenic agar.
