Seedling emergences of four rice varieties (Dongjinbyeo, Dadajo, Galsaekggarak-sharebyeo, and Italiconaverneco) and three barnyardgrass species(Echjnochloa oryzjcola, E. crus-gali var. crus gali E. crus-gali var. praticola) were evaluated in relation to soil strength. Soil strength was varied by compressing the entire volume of soil with a hydraulic jack so as to be 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 6kg /$\textrm{cm}^2$. Soil strength was measured with a penetrometer (Yamanaka type) and soil covering above the seed was 4cm deep. Experiments were conducted at two air temperature conditions of 17 and $25^{\circ}C$. At a soil strength of up to 2kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, little or no decrease in seedling emergence occurred in all rice varieties and barnyardgrasses tested. Above that value, seedling emergence decreased progressively as the soil strength increased. The degree of decrease was greatest in Dongjinbyeo and smallest in Dadajo among tested rice varieties, and greatest in Echinochloa oryzicola among barnyardgrasses, being greater in barnyardgrasses than rice. Seedling emergence was delayed almost linearly as the soil strength increased. The delay was greatest in Dongjinbyeo among rice varieties and in Echinochloa oryzicola among barnyardgrasses. Mesocotyl length increased as soil strength increased up to 2 to 3kg / $\textrm{cm}^2$ in Dongjinbyeo and Dadajo in 17$^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, and up to 6kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in Galsaekggaraksharebyeo and Italiconaverneco in $25^{\circ}C$. Dongjinbyeo showed the least elongation of mesocotyl among rice varieties in any soil strength. The total length of mesotyl, first internode and incomplete leaf showed little variation with soil strength. The total length was longer than the 4cm covering depth in other varieties except Dongjinbyeo. This might have caused the lower emergence rate in Dongjinbyeo than other varieties in higher soil strength.

The effect of different cultural patterns on the growth and herbicidal response of rice(Oryza sativa L.) and barnyardgrass(Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola) was studied tinder direct-seeded rice and early rice seedling conditions. In dry-seeded rice condition, the growth of rice and barnyardgrass was the greatest in 3cm-seeding depth and 40% soil moisture, respectively. At 10 days after herbicide application, plant height of rice was severely inhibited in 1cm-seeding depth and 50% soil moisture, and the degree of inhibition was severer at application of pendi+molinate EC as compared to that of butachlor EC. On the other hand, plant heigth of barnyardgrass by treatment of herbicides was severely reduced regardless of seeding depth and soil moisture. The lengths of barnyardgrass mesocotyl and rice coleoptile were increased with increasing seeding depth and were severely inhibited by applied herbicides in 1cm-seeding depth under dry-seeded rice condition. The dry weight of rice at different leaching times after herbicides application showed slightly decreasing trend as the leaching time was delayed, but the growth of barnyardgrass was very severely inhibited regardless of the leaching time. In addition, the phytotoxicity of rice showed decreasing trend with the increase in transplanting depth and delay of application time under early rice seedling condition.
Seeds of rice, cv. Ilpoom, and barnyardgrasses(Echinochloa crus-galli, vars. oryzicola, crux-galli, and praticola) were sown for a characterization of their responses to temperature during emergence under a dry direct-seeded condition. A laboratory-made aluminum block apparatus for emergence-temperature control conferred a linear continuous temperature gradient from 10 to $30^{\circ}C$ to the seeds from cooling to heating ends of the apparatus. The lowest temperature for emergence was $12.3^{\circ}C$ for rice cv. Ilpoom, and $11.0^{\circ}C$ for the three varieties of Echinochloa spp.. Percent emergence of rice increased sharply with an increase in temperature by ca. $20^{\circ}C$, then leveled-off, while those of barnyardgrasses increased almost linearly with temperatures up to $30^{\circ}C$. In rice the time required for emergence after seeding was shortened exponentially with increased temperature while those for barnyardgrasses were shortened almost linearly from 11 to $30^{\circ}C$. The temperature-response characteristic of rice in emergence-speed was almost the same among those for the 1st emergence, emergence by 25, 50, 75%, or average emergence time. At $13^{\circ}C$, $346.7^{\circ}C$ days of accummulated temperature(26.67 days) were required for the 1st emergence in rice while 131.7, 136.0, and $138.7^{\circ}C$ days(10.13, 10.46, and 10.67 days) were required for the 1st emergence in E. spp., vars. crus-galli, praticola, and oryzicola, respectively. Greater cold tolerance and increasingly faster emergence of barnyardgrasses than rice below $20^{\circ}C$ seem to render the barnyardgrasses as much more competitive than rice at lower temperatures.

This study was conducted to investigate the phytotoxicity of main rice varieties and control efficacy of HPPD inhibitor to major paddy weeds at the time of temperature rise due to climate change. Phytotoxicity of herbicide to rice was increased as temperature was increased, and more severe in root than shoot. The phytotoxicity of japonica rice cultivars for the rice were mild enough to recover. However, glutinous rice, super high yield rice, and Tongil rice varieties were damaged enough to decrease the yield. Shindongjinbyeo transplanted by June 15, showed phytotoxicity enough to recover. However, in the rice field on June 30 and on July 15, the rice showed a remarkable inhibition. The control effect of Monochoria vaginalis and Scirpus juncoides was more than 90% under the temperature condition controlled artificially. However, Echinochloa oryzicola was controlled 40% at $27.5^{\circ}C$, which is a high temperature condition. In rice fields with different transplanting times, annual weeds except for E. oryzicola were highly controlled by 90% or more regardless of the time of transplanting.
In order to artificially reduce the quinclorac residue in aqueous solution and soil, six potential photosensitizers were screened for their effectiveness in enhancing the photodegradation. The degraded amount of quinclorac in distilled water by sunlight was minor compared to that in the dark, indicating that there was little direct photolysis. The photodegradation ratio of quinclorac in methanol was 40.3%. Whereas, the ratios in the presence of photosensitizers PS-1 (aromatic ketone), PS-3 (polycyclic quinone), and PS-6 (inorganic semiconductor) were 96.6, 72.7, and 95.7%, respectively, showing the most photosensitizing effects. In sand, PS-3 was more effective than any other photosensitizer PS-1 (19.6%), PS-3 (64.1%) and PS-6 ($17.9{\sim}19.4%$). five photoproducts of quinclorac in methanol were identified by GC-MS and quinclorac added with the photosensitizer PS-1 gave three photoproducts. Photoproducts with an aldehyde group formed in methanol were confirmed by the reduction of sodium 3,5-dinitrosalicylate in the Lindsay's method. E. crus-galli war. oryzicola was not controlled by the quinclorac residues photodegraded at tile concentrations higher than 30 ppm of the photosensitizer PS-3 in a flooded rice paddy soil. These results indicate that the quinclorac residues in aqueous solution and soil can be degraded efficiently by tile photosensitizers PS-1, PS-3, and PS-6.
A fact-finding survey was conducted to obtain the basic information on nation-wide weed distribution and farmer's opinions to weed control strategy in paddy field. Most respondents considered Echinochloa spp., Monochloa vaginalis, Sagittaria trifolia, and Scirpus juncoides etc. as dominate weeds in paddy fields. And herbicide resistant weed species were M. vaginalis, S. juncoides, E. oryzicola and S. pygmaea etc. Purchase guidances for herbicide selection, experience of farmers was 34.0% and dealers recommendation was 33.9% at farmer's level. And paddy field herbicides application frequence were one time 15.6% but twice 75.6%. Preferred herbicides were ranked in the following order: oxadizone 12% EC, butachlor 5% GR, butachlor 33% CS, mefenacet pyrazodulfuron-ethyl 21.42% SC, and oxadiargyl 1.7% EC etc. in paddy fields. And in most preferred foliar herbicide were bentazone MCPA 38.6% SL and bentazone cyhalop-butyl 18.5% ME, 48.5% and 22.3%, respectively.

This study was carried out to investigate the occurrence and distribution of ALS inhibiting herbicide-resistant weeds and to estimate the appeared areas of resistant weeds in the paddy fields of Gyeongnam province of Korea in 2017 and 2018 using a soil assay method. Compared with the 2012 survey, this study showed that the infested ratio of ALS inhibiting herbicide-resistant weeds increased from 1.0% to 66.8% and the infested area increased from 876 ha to 49,008 ha. The infested area of ALS inhibiting herbicide-resistant weeds was estimated in Ulsan-si (8.4%), Hapcheon-gun (8.3%), Haman-gun (7.9%), Goseong-gun (7.9%), Hadong-gun (7.3%), Jinju-si (7.2%), Changnyeong-gun (7.0%), Gimhae-si (6.4%), Miryang-si (5.5%), Busan-si (4.9%), Uiryeong-gun (4.6%), Namhae-gun (4.3%), Geochang-gun (4.2%), Changwon-si (3.8%), Geoje-si (2.9%), Yangsan-si (1.8%), Sancheong-gun (0.9%) and Tongyeong-si (0.4%), and the herbicide resistant weeds was not occurred in Hamyang-gun. The most dominant ALS inhibiting herbicide-resistant weeds in paddy fields were Monochoria vaginalis, followed by Echinochloa oryzicola, Lindernia dubia, Scirpus juncoides, Ludwigia prostrata, Cyperus difformis, Sagittaria trifolia and Rotala indica. ALS inhibiting herbicide-resistant M. vaginalis, L. dubia, and E. oryzoides occurred throughout Gyeongnam province, and ALS inhibiting herbicide-resistant S. trifolia and R. indica were only found in Gimhae-si. Therefore, these results will be utilized to estimate population dynamics of ALS inhibiting herbicide-resistant weeds and provide proper management practices in the paddy fields of Gyeongnam province.
