  • Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is a rare, hereditary disease occurring in males and was first described in 1937. It is characterized by cutaneous eczema, thrombocytopenic purpura and an increased susceptibility to infection due to an immunologic defect. Patients with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome have a poor antibody response to polysaccharide antigens, low levels of IgM and high levels of IgA and IgE in serum. Oral manifestations of Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome was observed a spontaneous gingival bleeding, palatal petechiae, ulcer and gingival hyperplasia. We report on dental treatment of a 5 years old boy with severe spontaneous gingival bleeding and ulcer suffered from Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. Prophylactic antibiotics to prevent infection and all potential measures including platelet concentrate therapy to prevent postoperative bleeding should be undertaken. Good oral hygiene should be maintained for prevention of infection by oral normal flora.

  • We present a UBVI and $H{\alpha}$ photometric study of the young open cluster NGC 1893 in the outer Galaxy as part of "Sejong Open cluster Survey (SOS)" project. Using the properties of early-type stars in the photometric diagrams 65 early-type members were selected. More than 120 $H{\alpha}$ emission stars and candidates were found by $H{\alpha}$ photometry. Together with the published young stellar object catalogue and X-ray source list for this cluster, a total of 837 pre-main sequence (PMS) stars were identified in our photometric data. We obtained the mean reddening of < E(B-V) > = $0.56{\pm}0.08$ mag from the (U-B, B-V) diagram and confirmed the normal reddening law ($R_V=3.1$) toward NGC 1893 based on color excess ratios from optical to mid-infrared wavelengths. The zero-age main sequence fitting to the reddening-corrected color-magnitude diagrams gives a distance modulus of $V_0-M_V=12.8{\pm}0.1$. The age of the cluster inferred from stellar evolution models is about 1-2 Myr. We also found the Salpeter/Kroupa type initial mass function for this cluster. Finally, the mass accretion rate of 80 PMS stars with UV excess emission was estimated for the stars with masses from $0.6M_{\odot}$ to $5M_{\odot}$.

  • Three hundred chicks were randomly assigned among four treatments to evaluate the effect of an organic selenium supplement at various levels of dietary protein. Two levels of supplemental selenium (0 and 0.3 mg/kg) from zinc-L-selenomethionine were tested at two levels of dietary protein (normal and reduced) in a completely randomized design with $2{\times}2$ factorial layout. The experiment lasted up to 49 d of age during which all birds were exposed to $31{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The effects of selenium or its interaction with CP on growth performance and carcass characteristics were not significant. However, feeding the reduced-CP diet decreased weight gain in the starting period and increased liver and abdominal fat weights relative to body weight. Ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) was not significantly affected by dietary CP and Se or their interaction though FRAP values were numerically higher in the Se-supplemented group. Dietary CP content did not affect the activity of plasma glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), though Se significantly elevated plasma GSHPx activity. The interaction of CP and Se was not significant for FRAP and plasma GSHPx activity.

  • These studies were conducted to investigate the effects of Leonurus sibiricus extract (L.S.E.) on experimentally $CCl_4-induced$ liver damage and alloxan-induced diabetes in rabbits; Leonurus sibiricus juice (L.S.J.) showed the most rapid recuperation of liver function among samples compared to the control group in $CCl_4-intoxicated$ rabbits. SGPT activity stowed an apparant decreasing effect in 4 days, and the blood level of total cholesterol and total bilirubin in 6 days, and not in alkaline phosphatase level. L.S.J. exhibited more excellent hypoglycemic effect in alloxan-induced diabetes of rabbits, that is, significant to the control group after 2 days and adjacent to the normal level on 8th day. And SGPT activity and total cholesterol level were gradually decreased and showed markedly decreasing effect after 4 days.

  • To identify novel genes that are regulated by promoter methylation, a combinational approach involving in silico mining followed by molecular assay was performed. From the expression microarray data registered in the European bioinformatics institute (EBI), genes showing downregulation in breast cancer cells were initially screened and then selected by e-Northern analysis using the Unigene database. A series of these in silico methods identified CAMK2B and ARFGEF1 as candidates, and the two genes were revealed to be hypermethylated in breast cancer cell lines and hypomethylated in normal breast cell lines. Additionally, cancer cell lines showed downregulated expression of these genes. Furthermore, treatment of the cancer cell lines with a demethylation agent, 5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidine, recovered expression of CAMK2B and ARFGEF1, implying that hypermethyaltion silenced gene activity in cancer cells. Taken together, promoter methylations of CAMK2B and ARFGEF1 are novel epigenetic markers identified in breast cancer cell lines and can be utilized for the application to clinical cancer tissues.

  • The electrocaloric effect of 9/65/35 PLZT thin film fabricated by the sol-gel method, which has not been studied yet, was investigated for its structural, electrical properties as well as temperature change property. The relaxor ferroelectric property of 9/65/35 PLZT thin film was confirmed by examining its dielectric and electrical properties. The relaxor property can cause a more pronounced electrocaloric effect (ECE) in a wider temperature range than normal ferroelectric film. To avoid errors caused by using an indirect measurement method, the leakage current generated by increasing temperatures was minimized by using the optimal maximum electric field ($350kVcm^{-1}$) in the thin film. The largest temperature change ${\delta}T$ (0.23 K) and the electrocaloric strength ${\xi}$ (0.68 mkcm/kV), calculated by equations were obtained. The maximum field change ${\delta}E$ ($191kVcm^{-1}$) was in the vicinity of the curie temperature ($200^{\circ}C$).

  • A total of eighty five cases with supraglottic carcinoma treated by radical radiotherapy in Yonsei Cancer Center between Jan. 1974 and Dec. 1980, was observed through retrospective analysis. This study is concerned wi th patients selection for irradiation alone or combined treatment with surgery. Emphasis is directed to the analysis of effectiveness of radical radiotherapy instead of partial laryngectomy in T-1, T-2 and early T-3 lesion. A satisfactory control of laryngeal disease and preservation of a normal voice ranging from 100% for $T_1N_0$ lesions, 61.1% for $T_2N_0$ to 50% for $T_3N_0$. But 47.1% of cases with node metastasis on admission had poor results to irradiation suggesting of necessicity of combined treatment. 5 year recurrence-free survivals was 43.3% in all cases with supraglottic carcinoma treated by irradiation alone, although it was 87.5% in T-1 and 51.8% in T-2.

  • Context-awareness is an essential part of ubiquitous computing, and over the past decade video based activity recognition (VAR) has emerged as an important component to identify user's context for automatic service delivery in context-aware applications. The accuracy of VAR significantly depends on the performance of the employed human body segmentation algorithm. Previous human body segmentation algorithms often engage modeling of the human body that normally requires bulky amount of training data and cannot competently handle changes over time. Recently, active contours have emerged as a successful segmentation technique in still images. In this paper, an active contour model with the integration of Chan Vese (CV) energy and Bhattacharya distance functions are adapted for automatic human body segmentation using depth cameras for VAR. The proposed technique not only outperforms existing segmentation methods in normal scenarios but it is also more robust to noise. Moreover, it is unsupervised, i.e., no prior human body model is needed. The performance of the proposed segmentation technique is compared against conventional CV Active Contour (AC) model using a depth-camera and obtained much better performance over it.

  • There are many students around us, who are mathematically promising but have not taken some instructions with a program for the gifted. Providing a certain opportunity for them to take a differentiate program from one given normal students in a regular classroom has some limitations. If ever, offering a learning program developed with the connection of regular curriculum can lead them to reveal their potential. I think it is desirable that the effect of the program is more increasing when study in school keeps a reciprocal relationship to study in home for increasing the students' promising. In this paper, it is discussed to develop and implement the teaching learning program for the integration and connection of school and home for the Mathemaically Promising Students.

  • This article deals with the spin loss analysis of friction drive CVTs, especially for the cases of S-CVT and SS-CVT. There are two main sources of power loss resulting from slippage in the friction drive CVT, spin and slip loss. Spin loss, which is also a main design issue in traction drives, results from the elastic contact deformation of rotating bodies having different rotational velocities. The structure and operating principles of the S-CVT and SS-CVT are first reviewed briefly. And to analyze the losses resulting from slippage, we reviewed previous analyses of the friction mechanism. A modified classical friction model is proposed, which describes the friction behavior including Stribeck (i.e., pre-sliding) effect. It is also performed an in-depth study for the velocity fields generated at the contact regions along with a Hertzian analysis of deflection. Hertzian results were employed to construct the geometric parameters and normal pressure distributions of the contact surface with respect to elastic and plastic deformations. With analytic formulations of the relative velocity field, deflection, and friction mechanism of the S-CVT and SS-CVT, quantitative analyses of spin loss for each case are carried out. As a result, explicit models of spin loss were developed.
