  • There has been a significant paradigm shift in the book industry from print to digital, with the increased use of electronic books (e-books) on e-book readers. The major online booksellers and publishers are devoting their energies to the growth of the e-book market, resulting in an upward spiral in e-book usage, and a resultant increase in the number of downloaded e-books in an e-book reader library. However, there are comparatively few features for e-book management and search in most e-book reader libraries, particularly in smartphone environments. In addition, the user interfaces of e-book management in e-book readers are highly diverse, which has led to major usability issues. In this paper, we analyze user preferences for e-book management and search in the libraries of the five most commonly used e-readers for the Android smartphone platform via a questionnaire survey. Then, we suggest ideal alternatives in addition to user-friendly features based on user preferences for managing e-book libraries, to allow users to more easily browse collections, thereby enhancing the usability of e-book readers.

  • The mobile industry is the key foundation of digital convergence, and its constant growth is expected. Among mobile industries, new products leading the development of devices are the Emerging Device. This study is conducted to find out factors making differentiated by comparing the structural equation model(SEM) of the Tablet PC and the e-Book Reader. The main findings are as follows. First, the application of TAM to the Emerging Device shows that fitness of the model is generally high but the effect of Perceived Ease of Use has not been verified or found insignificant. Second, the acceptance model of the Tablet PC and the e-Book Reader has found that playfulness stimulates acceptance intentions. Third, the cost level of the Emerging Device acceptance model is not a factor stimulating consumers' acceptance intentions. Fourth, product attributes of the Tablet PC and the e-Book Reader to differentiate themselves from the other device are Functionality and Playfulness respectively.

  • Many e-book readers have become available as e-books are in popular use these days. We first developed the evaluation criteria and elements for testing the usability of e-book readers and then examined the usability of three e-book readers. The usability testing was conducted using three e-book readers that were most popular with 15 participants that consisted of middle school students, university students, and office workers. The study found that iPad showed the best usability. In case of Amazon Kindle, participants indicated that the lack of the touch function imposed a great deal of negative impact on the usability of the interface. Also, the hardware- and software-oriented usability provided by an e-book reader was considered to be a very important element for the users, and the portability in connection with the hardware-oriented aspect of an e-book reader was shown to be of great effect to the overall usability of an e-book reader.

  • We developed a Java library Xeni for e-book reader systems on embedded Linux environment. Xeni is an API library providing functions such as rendering for XML-based e-book contents, navigation mechanism for readers and bookmark management. This library is developed in Java language, targeting java virtual machines on embedded Linux systems. We discuss design and structure of the developed library, and introduce the reference implementation of a reader system using this library. Also, virtual machines on Linux environment are briefly surveyed.

  • This study aims to enhance the usability of eBook reader programs on personal computers through heuristic evaluation in order to learn users' perceptions and derive key elements for interface design. For this purpose, the traditional usability evaluation and heuristic evaluation method were studied. A total of 22 evaluators of the heuristic evaluation were taken by purposive sampling to test the interface of eBook reader on PCs. This study suggested ten heuristics that focus on improving and specializing the usability aspects of reading digital materials.

  • In this paper, we have developed an E-book reader for EBKS XML documents on the embedded Linux environment. This reader operated on a Linux target board parses the EBKS XML documents using the Qt SAX interface and displays the parsed pages through the QWS (Qt Windows System) which is a cross-platform windows toolkit. This reader can be easily and rapidly developed on Linux as well as MS windows and requires less memory than DOM interfaces because it parses with SAX interface.
