  • Although the needs for providing resilient PNT information are increasing, threats due to the intentional RFI or space weather change are challenging to resolve. eLoran, which is a terrestrial navigation system that use a high-power signal is considered as a best back-up navigation system. Depending on the user's environment in the eLoran system, the user may use one of E-field or H-field antennas. H-field antenna, which has no restriction on setting stable ground and is relatively resistant to noise of general electronic equipment, is composed of two loops, and shows anisotropic gain pattern due to the different measurement at the two loops. Therefore, the H-field antenna's phase estimation value of signal varies depending on its direction even at the static environment. The error due to the direction of the signal should be eliminated if the user want to estimate the own position more precisely. In this paper, a method to compensate the error according to the geometric distribution between the H-field antenna and the transmitting station is proposed. A model was developed to compensate the directional error of H-field antenna based on the signal generated from the eLoran signal simulator. The model is then used to the survey measurement performed in the land area and verify its performance.

  • This paper, designed UWB elliptical slot antenna and analysis based on the distribution of the electromagnetic fields pattern and resonant mode of designed antenna is presented. Designed antenna is fabricated on FR4 substrate with thickness of 1.524mm and relative dielectric constant 4.4. The measured bandwidth of $3.6GHz{\sim}20GHz$ for VSWR<2. Through the field pattern and resonant mode analysis that the slot antenna operates on a series of the multi-pole radiation based on TE modes matched to system impedance. And the perfect magnetic wall is along the axis of symmetry on the y-z plane. This result gives us an easier method to design the similar antennas, which is the impedance matching to the system impedance after once constructing a proper structure with a series of multi-mode resonances.

  • In this paper, the scan characteristics of phased array antenna consisted of rectangular open-ended waveguide with a triangular grid are investigated. An infinite array structure is analyzed by numerically solving the integral equation for the electric field over the waveguide aperture using waveguide mode function and Floquet mode function. Next, SEP(Scan Element Pattern) and SI(Scan Impedance) characteristics are simulated by CST's MWS(Microwave Studio) and Ansoft's HFSS(High Frequency Structure Simulator) for the finite and infinite array structures. Also, validity of these approaches is verified by comparing the calculated and simulated results with the measured ones for an $8{\times}8$ subarray. Within 10.5 % fractional bandwidth in the X-band, the fabricated subarray showed the flat gain characteristic in the scan range of ${\pm}45^{\circ}C$ in the E-plane(azimuth) and ${\pm}20^{\circ}C$ in the H-plane(elevation), and also showed the return loss characteristic of less than -10 dB.

  • We introduce a new project of constructing a large spectro-photometric samples of metal-poor (i.e. [Fe/H] < -1.0) subdwarfs in the Galactic halo. The sample is collected from a compilation of the stellar objects that are cross-identified both in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and recently published data from GAIA mission. The color range of the selected stars covers 0.0 < (g-r) < 2.0; thus the spectral types of our sample span from early F- through late K-type stars on the metal-poor main sequence (i.e. the local subdwarf sequence). We scrutinized the physical, chemical, and kinematical properties of our samples using their SDSS medium-resolution (R ~ 2000) spectra, combined with accurately measured proper motions from GAIA satellite. Our study will provide useful information on the global trend in the various properties (e.g. abundance pattern as a function of the galactocentric distance; rotational velocity vs [Fe/H] ${\cdots}$ etc) of the metal-poor subdwarf populations in the Galactic halo, which is ultimately important to better understand metal-poor stellar evolutionary models and chemical evolution of the Milky Way halo in the early phase of its formation. Further our comprehensive catalog of the Galactic field halo subdwarfs collected in this study will serve a solid groundwork for future follow-up high resolution spectroscopic observations on many interesting individual targets.

  • Ekman layer equation with rough-bottom boundary condition has been solved to determine the effect of roughness on the magnitude of Ekman veering. The bottom boundary condition and the flow field were expanded in a power of roughness (h) which is always smaller than the Ekman layer thickness (${\delta}_E$). By changing the magnitude of roughness parameter (h/${\delta}_E$), the magnitude of the veering, which rotates counterclockwise from the interior geostrophic flow, has been computed. At a fixed depth within the Ekman layer, the magnitude of veering increases as the roughness parameter increases. However, the cross-isobar flux turns out to decrease with increasing roughness. To verify the analytic solution, laboratory experiments were carried out. Rough-bottom cylinderical container filled with homogeneous fluid was sit on a rotating table. The flow pattern during the period of steady spin-up shows that the degree of veering coincides well with the analytic results for various roughness parameters.

  • The ground penetrating radar (GPR) signal can be measured with different amplitudes according to the directivity, so the directivity of the antenna should be considered. The objective of this study is to investigate the directivity of antenna by analyzing the reflection characteristics of electromagnetic waves radiated from the antenna, and to evaluate effective range of angle that can inspect an abnormal area according to the directivity of antenna. For the measurement of the directivity, a circular metal bar is used as reflector and the signals are measured by changing the angle and the distance between reflector and antenna in the E- and H-plane. The boundary distance between the near field and the far field is determined by analyzing the amplitudes of reflected signals, and two points with different distances from each of near and far fields are designated to analyze radiation patterns in near and far fields. As a result of radiation pattern measurement, in the near field, minor lobes are observed at angle section at more than $50^{\circ}$ in both E- and H-plane. Therefore, antenna has the directivity for the direction of main lobe and minor lobes in near field. In the far field, antenna has the directivity for a single direction of main lobe because minor lobes are not observed. The amplitude of the signal reflected from the near field is unstable, but it can be distinguished from noise. Therefore, in the near field, the ground anomaly can be detected with high reliability. On the other hand, the amplitude of the signal reflected from the far field is stable, but it is hard to distinguish between reflected signal and noise because of the excessive loss of electromagnetic wave. The analyses of directivity in the near and the far fields performed in this study may be effectively used to improve the reliability of the analyses of abnormal area.

  • In this paper, the transmit antenna for the space feeder used for the phased array antennas is investigated. The multi-aperture horn antenna is proposed as the transmit antenna and the characteristics are verified with the Matlab coding, HFSS of Ansoft Corp., and MWS of CST Corp., The E-plane and H-plane beam patterns of the multi-aperture horn antenna are nearly symmetrical and the sidelobe level of the I-plane beam pattern is lower than that the of general pyramidal horn antenna. The fabricated multi-aperture horn antenna is measured using the near-field measurement system. The measured results show good agreement with the simulated ones.

  • LNG Carriers are currently known as sole commercial means of shipping natural gas on the sea. They are designed to proven dangerous explosion for shipping a lot of gas over long distance. In this study. In this study, a scaled model chamber was made to investigate ventilation characteristics of the hood room in LNG carrier. Experimental study was performed in model using visualization equipments with laser apparatus and image intensifier CCD camera gated by an AOM controller Twelve different kinds of measuring area were selected as experimental condition. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by using 2-D PIV system which software adopts two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm. To look into stagnation area of hood room for LNG carrier, a three-dimensional numerical simulation with standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model was carried out by using PHOENICS for three kinds of Reynolds number, $6.5{\times}10^3$, $9.7{\times}10^3\;and\;1.29{\times}10^4$, based on the cavity inlet velocity and cavity height. The flow pattern showed the large scale counter-clockwise forced-vortex rotated at center area, small eddies at each corner and stagnation area located at left-back upper side of model.

  • Hemisphere type Luneberg lens antenna with a reflector(frequency : 9.375 GHz, -3 dB beam width 6$^{\circ}$, diameter 30.3 cm(about 10 A), which is miniaturized and lightweightized by attaching a reflector on a section of half the Luneberg lens antenna, is designed and fabricated on the basis of Luneberg lens antenna from which easy beam pointing is acquired only by movement of 1st radiator. Measurement shows -3dB beamwidth is 6.1$^{\circ}$ in case of E-plane and 5.5$^{\circ}$ in case of H-plane. These are good agreements with expected value. Gain of this antenna is 26dBi(Aperture efficiency for uniform distribution : $\pi$ = 44.97%) which is greater than that of 1st radiator(Rectangular microstrip antenna) by 20.4 dB. And, after calculating the approximated pattern of the 1st radiator, far-field pattern, whose source is the second aperture source farmed from the approximated pattern of the 1st radiator is computed. Comparing this far-field pattern with the expected pattern, a (relatively) good agreement is observed. Circular polarization Luneberg lens antenna is also manufactured by making 1st radiator so that it has the characteristics of LHCP and RHCP radiation. The results are as followings : -3 dB beamwidth 5.8$^{\circ}$ , side lobe level -15.3 dB, isolation between LHCP and RHCP radiation 2543, axial ratio 2 dB bandwidth about 1.4 GHz(14.9%).

  • The paper presents a case study addressing the design and construction aspects for DCM(Deep Cement Mixing) method employed as the foundation of a caisson type breakwater with heavy weight(10,700 ton/EA) and a high design wave height($H_{1/3}$=8.7m). The DCM was designed for the project(Ulsan New Port North Breakwater Phase 1) by optimizing the pattern of DCM columns with a combination of short and long columns (i.e., block type(upper 3m)+wall type(lower)) and considering overlapped section between columns as a critical section against shear force where the coefficient of effective width of treated column($\alpha$) was estimated with caution. It was shown that the value can be 0.9 under the condition with the overlapped width of 30cm. In addition to that, a field trial test was performed after improving conventional DCM equipment (e.g., mixing blades, cement paste supplying pipes, multi auger motor, etc.) to establish a standardized DCM construction cycle (withdrawal rate of mixing blades) which can provide the prescribed strength. The result of the field strength test for cored DCM specimens shows that the averaged strength is larger than the target strength and the distribution of the strength(with a defect rate of 7%) also satisfies with the quality control normal distribution curve which allows defect rate of 15.9%.
