  • Background: This study aimed to explore the role of XRCC1 (Arg399Gln) and XPD (Lys751Gln) gene polymorphisms, lifestyle and environmental factors as well as their possible interactions in propensity to develop lung cancer in a population with high incidence from North East India. Materials and Methods: A total of 272 lung cancer cases and 544 controls were collected and XRCC1 (Arg399Gln) and XPD (Lys751Gln) genotypes were analyzed using a polymerase chain reaction based restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. Conditional multiple logistic regression analysis was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals after adjusting for confounding factors. Results: The combined Gln/Gln genotype of XRCC1 and XPD genes (OR=2.78, CI=1.05-7.38; p=0.040) was significantly associated with increased risk for lung cancer. Interaction of XRCC1Gln/Gln genotype with exposure of wood combustion (OR=2.56, CI=1.16-5.66; p=0.020), exposure of cooking oil fumes (OR=3.45, CI=1.39-8.58; p=0.008) and tobacco smoking (OR=2.54, CI=1.21-5.32; p=0.014) and interaction of XPD with betel quid chewing (OR=2.31, CI=1.23-4.32; p=0.009) and tobacco smoking (OR=2.13, CI=1.12-4.05; p=0.022) were found to be significantly associated with increased risk for lung cancer. Conclusions: Gln/Gln alleles of both XRCC1 and XPD genes appear to amplify the effects of household exposure, smoking and betel quid chewing on lung cancer risk in the study population.

  • We investigated the possibility of using graphene for control of hydrogen isotopes by exploring adsorption, reflection, and penetration of hydrogen isotopes on graphene using molecular dynamics. Reflection is the dominant interaction when hydrogen isotopes have low incident energy. Adsorption rates increase with increasing incident energy until 5 eV is reached. After 5 eV, adsorption rates decrease as incident energy increases. At incident energies greater than 5 eV, adsorption rates increase with the number of graphene layers. At low incident energies (<1 eV), no isotopic effects on interactions are observed since the predominant interaction is derived from the force of π electrons. Between 1 eV and 50 eV, heavier isotopes exhibit higher adsorption rates and lower reflection rates than lighter isotopes, due to the greater momentum of heavier isotopes. Adsorption rates are consistently higher when the incident angle of the impacting atoms is smaller between 0.5 eV and 5 eV. At higher energies (>5 eV), larger incident angles lead to higher reflection and lower penetration rates. At high incident energies (>5 eV), crumpled graphene has higher adsorption and lower penetration rates than wrinkled or unwrinkled graphene. The results obtained in this research study will be used to develop novel nanomaterials that can be employed for tritium control.

  • Elimination reactions of $(E)-2,4-(NO_2)_2C_6H_2CH=NOC_6H_3-2-X-4-NO_2$ (1a-e) promoted by $R_3N/R_3NH^+$ in 70 mol % MeCN(aq) have been studied kinetically. The reactions are second-order and exhibit Br$\ddot{o}$nsted ${\beta}$ = 0.80-0.84 and ${\mid}{\beta}_{lg}{\mid}$ = 0.39-0.42, respectively. For all leaving groups and bases employed in this study, the ${\beta}$ and ${\mid}{\beta}_{lg}{\mid}$ values remained almost the same. The results can be described by a negligible $p_{xy}$ interaction coefficient, $p_{xy}={\partial}{\beta}/pK_{lg}={\partial}{\beta}_{lg}/pK_{BH}{\approx}0$, which describes the interaction between the base catalyst and the leaving group. The negligible pxy interaction coefficient is consistent with the $(E1cb)_{irr}$ mechanism. Change of the base-solvent system from $R_3N$/MeCN to $R_3N/R_3NH^+$-70 mol % MeCN(aq) changed the reaction mechanism from E2 to $(E1cb)_{irr}$. Noteworthy was the relative insensitivity of the transition state structure to the reaction mechanism change.

  • In this study, epoxidized liquid isoprene rubber (E-LqIR) was used as a processing aid in a silica-filled natural rubber compound to improve the fuel efficiency, abrasion resistance, and oil migration problems of truck and bus radial tire tread. The wear resistance, fuel efficiency, and extraction resistance of the compound were evaluated according to the molecular weight of E-LqIR. Results of the evaluation showed that the E-LqIR compound had a lower chemical crosslink density than that of a treated distillate aromatic extract (TDAE) oil compound because of the sulfur consumption of E-LqIR. However, the filler-rubber interaction improved because of the reaction of E-LqIR with silica and crosslink with the base rubber by sulfur. As the molecular weight of E-LqIR increased, crosslink with sulfur was facilitated, and the filler-rubber interaction improved, resulting in improved abrasion resistance. The fuel efficiency performance of the E-LqIR compound was poorer than that of the TDAE oil compound because of the low chemical crosslink density and hysteresis loss at the free chain end of E-LqIR. However, the fuel efficiency performance improved as the molecular weight of E-LqIR increased.

  • In order to analysis of the stress distribution around flaws and the interaction effects between fatigue cracks, stress around micro hole was analyzed by Finite Element Method(F.E.M.) and micro hole specimens were tested using rotary bending fatigue machine and twisting fatigue machine to identify stress effects for fatigue cracks initiating from micro holes and interaction effects between micro holes. The results are as follows : Interaction effects of .sigma. $_{y}$for the micro hole side is larger than the large micro hole side when the interval between micro holes is near. Stress concentration factor increase as the diameter of micro hole becomes smaller. But, stress field of micro hole is smaller than that of large micro hole at h .leq. r (h:depth of micro hole, r:radius of micro hole) and that of large hole is larger than that of small micro hole at h >r expect the small range from micro hole.e.

  • This paper proposes an interaction field concept based on the field theory of plasticity. Relative deformation between two arbitrary scales, e.g., macro and micro fields, is defined which can be implemented in the crystal plasticity-based constitutive framework. Differential geometrical quantities responsible for describing dislocations and defects in the interaction field are obtained, based on which dislocation density and incompatibility tensors are further derived. It is shown that the explicit interaction exists in the curvature or incompatibility tensor field, whereas no interaction in the torsion or dislocation density tensor field. General expressions of the interaction fields over multiple scales with more than three scale levels are derived and implemented into the present constitutive equation.
