In this paper, we propose a neural network for learning to control semi-linear dynamical systems. The network is a composite system of four three-layer backpropagation subnetworks, and is able to control inverted pendulums better than systems based on modern control theory at least in some ranges of parameters. Three of the four subnetworks in our network system process angles, velocities, and positions of a moving inverted pendulum, respectively. The outputs from those three subnetworks are input to the remaining subnetwork that makes control decisions. Each of the four subnetworks learns connection weights independently by backpropagation algorithms. Teaching signals are given by the human operator. Also, input signals are generated by the human operator, but they are converted by preprocessors to actual input data for the three subnetworks except for the network for control decisions. The whole system is implemented on both of 16 bit personal computers and 32 bit workstations. First, we briefly provide the research background and the inverted pendulum problem itself, followed by the description of our composite neural network model. Next, some results from the simulation are given, which are subsequently compared with the results from a control system based on modern control theory. Then, some discussions and conclusion follow.
The climate projection with a high spatial resolution is required for the studies on regional climate changes. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has provided downscaled RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) scenarios over Korea with 1 km spatial resolution. If there are additional climate projections produced by dynamically downscale, the quality of impacts and vulnerability assessments of Korea would be improved with uncertainty information. This technical note intends to instruct the methods to downscale the climate projections dynamically from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. In particular, here we focus on the instruction to utilize CAM2WRF, a sub-program to link output of CESM to initial and boundary condition of WRF at Linux platform. We also provide the example of the dynamically downscaled results over Korean Peninsula with 50 km spatial resolution for August, 2020. This instruction can be helpful to utilize global scale climate scenarios for studying regional climate change over Korean peninsula with further validation and uncertainty/bias analysis.
In piezoelectric flexible structures, the contribution of vibration modes to the dynamic response of system may change with the location of piezoelectric actuator patches, which means that the ability of actuators to control vibration modes should be taken into account in the development of modal reduction model. The spatial $H_2$ norm of modes, which serves as a measure of the intensity of modes to system dynamical response, is used to pick up the modes included in the reduction model. Based on the reduction model, the paper develops the state-space representation for uncertain flexible tructures with piezoelectric material as non-collocated actuators/sensors in the modal space, taking into account uncertainties due to modal parameters variation and unmodeled residual modes. In order to suppress the vibration of the structure, a dynamic output feedback control law is designed by imultaneously considering the conflicting performance specifications, such as robust stability, transient response requirement, disturbance rejection, actuator saturation constraints. Based on linear matrix inequality, the vibration control design is converted into a linear convex optimization problem. The simulation results show how the influence of vibration modes on the dynamical response of structure varies with the location of piezoelectric actuators, why the uncertainties should be considered in the reductiom model to avoid exciting high-frequency modes in the non-collcated vibration control, and the possiblity that the conflicting performance specifications are dealt with simultaneously.
We have performed the high resolution computer simulation with 1D spherical hydrodynamic code in order to study the dynamical evolution of supernova ejecta interacting with a pre-existing fast wind structure. The fast wind structure has been calculated with $M_{in}=3{\times}10^{-6}M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ and ${\upsilon}_{in}=1000km/sec$, which velocity is higher than the critical velocity relating to the initial radiative cooling. The fast wind becomes initially adiabatic. After a shell formation time of ${\sim}4000yrs$, the wind becomes radiative cooling at the shell zone, forming a thin dense radiative shell and an adiabatic wind bubble afterward. When supernova explodes in the wind center at 20,000yrs after the wind evolves, the supernova ejecta, which has a dense distribution of ${\rho}{\propto}r^{-n}$(here we have n = 9), interacts initially with, the understood wind zone, producing forward and reverse shocks. The reverse shock heats the supernova ejecta and its temperature increases. In this study, as the mass of the supernova ejecta is larger than that of the wind shell ($M_{ej}=5M_{\odot}$, $M_{sw}=2M_{\odot}$), we can conform two shell structures: an outer shell by the supernova ejecta and a secondarily shocked wind shell by it. The secondarily shocked wind shell should accelerates in this case to be R-T unstable, consequently producing the knots.
A wireless sensor network is emerging technology and intelligent wireless communication paradigm that is dynamically aware of its surrounding environment. It is also able to respond to it in order to achieve reliable and efficient communication. The dynamical cognition capability and environmental adaptability rely on organizing dynamical networks effectively. However, optimally clustering the cognitive wireless sensor networks is an NP-complete problem. The objective of this paper is to develop an optimal sensor network design for maximizing the performance. This proposed Ranking Artificial Bee Colony (RABC) is developed based on Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) with ranking strategy. The ranking strategy can make the much better solutions by combining the best solutions so far and add these solutions in the solution population when applying ABC. RABC is designed to adapt to topological changes to any network graph in a time. We can minimize the total energy dissipation of sensors to prolong the lifetime of a network to balance the energy consumption of all nodes with robust optimal solution. Simulation results show that the performance of our proposed RABC is better than those of previous methods (LEACH, LEACH-C, and etc.) in wireless sensor networks. Our proposed method is the best for the 100 node-network example when the Sink node is centrally located.
Galaxy clusters contain a diffuse component of stars outside galaxies, that is observed as intracluster light (ICL). Since the ICL abundance increases during various dynamical exchanges of galaxies, the amount of ICL can act as a measurement tool for the dynamical stage of galaxy clusters. There are two prominent ICL formation scenarios; one is related to the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) major mergers, and the other to the tidal stripping of galaxies. However, it is still under debate as to which is the main ICL formation mechanism. In this study we improve on earlier observational constraints of the ICL origin, by investigating it in a massive fossil cluster at z~0.47. Fossil clusters are believed to be dynamically matured galaxy clusters which have dominant BCGs. Recent simulation studies imply that, BCGs have assembled 85~90% of their mass by z~0.4 (e.g., Contini et al. 2014). Thus our target is an optimal test bed to examine the BCG-related scenario. Our deep images and Multi-Object Spectroscopic observations of the target fossil cluster (Gemini North 2018A) allow us to extract the ICL distribution, ICL color map and ICL fraction to cluster light. We will present a possible constraint of the ICL origin and discuss its connection to the BCG and the host galaxy cluster.

During launch a spacecraft is subjected to a variety of dynamical loads transmitted through the launcher to spacecraft interface or air-born transmission excitations in the acoustic pressure field inside the fairing. As a result, spacecraft are tested on ground to ensure and demonstrate the global integrity of the structure against these loads, to screen the flight hardware for quality of workmanship and to validate mathematical models. This paper addresses the numerical modelling and simulation of the low frequency sine and random vibration tests performed on electrodynamic shaker facilities to comprise the mechanical-borne transmission loads through the launcher to spacecraft interface. Consequently, the paper reviews techniques and methodologies to derive a reliable and representative coupled virtual vibration testing simulation environment based on experimental data. These technologies are explored with the main objectives to ensure a stable, reliable and accurate control while testing. As a result, the use of the derived simulation models in combination with the added value of improved control and signal processing algorithms can lead to a safer and smoother vibration test control of the entire environmental test campaign.

A novel methodology, referred to as Auxiliary Domain Method (ADM), allowing for a very efficient solution of nonlinear reliability problems is presented. The target nonlinear failure domain is first populated by samples generated with the help of a Markov Chain. Based on these samples an auxiliary failure domain (AFD), corresponding to an auxiliary reliability problem, is introduced. The criteria for selecting the AFD are discussed. The emphasis in this paper is on the selection of the auxiliary linear failure domain in the case where the original nonlinear reliability problem involves multiple objectives rather than a single objective. Each reliability objective is assumed to correspond to a particular response quantity not exceeding a corresponding threshold. Once the AFD has been specified the method proceeds with a modified subset simulation procedure where the first step involves the direct simulation of samples in the AFD, rather than standard Monte Carlo simulation as required in standard subset simulation. While the method is applicable to general nonlinear reliability problems herein the focus is on the calculation of the probability of failure of nonlinear dynamical systems subjected to Gaussian random excitations. The method is demonstrated through such a numerical example involving two reliability objectives and a very large number of random variables. It is found that ADM is very efficient and offers drastic improvements over standard subset simulation, especially when one deals with low probability failure events.
A complex system such as defense systems is in a form of System of Systems (SoS) in which each component is a system being independent of other component systems. Dynamical behavior of SoS is represented by a composition of behaviors of component systems. Thus, a M&S tool/environment would not be efficient for development of heterogeneous models nor for simulation in a centralized environment. Moreover, such an environment restricts reusability and composability. This paper presents an interoperation method for M&S of defense systems as SoS. The approach first develops component system models using tools, each specialized to M&S of each component system. It then interoperates such simulations together to simulate a whole system as SoS. HLA/RTI is employed for such interoperation, which is a DoD/IEEE standard to support interoperation. We will introduce a case study for interoperable simulation of defense systems, which consists of a wargame simulator and a communication simulator.

We introduce a method of identifying evidence of shocks in the X-ray emitting gas in clusters of galaxies. Using information from synthetic observations of simulated clusters, we do a blind search of the synthetic image plane. The locations of likely shocks found using this method closely match those of shocks identified in the simulation hydrodynamic data. Though this method assumes nothing about the geometry of the shocks, the general distribution of shocks as a function of Mach number in the cluster hydrodynamic data can be extracted via this method. Characterization of the cluster shock distribution is critical to understanding production of cosmic rays in clusters and the use of shocks as dynamical tracers.
