Effects of Guisinhwan on the Ovariectomized Rat Model of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (귀신환이 난소적출 백서의 골다공증에 미치는 영향)

  • Aging is characterized by an age-dependent reduction in bone density. Pronounced bone loss by postmenopausal estrogen deficiency induces a bad effect on dynamic balance of bone metabolism. When the bone density is reduced to the level below the fracture threshold, the risk for fracture is greatly increased. The purpose of this study is to examine what are the effects of the Guisinhwan(GSH : 歸腎丸) on the ovariectomized rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. The results of the experiment are as follows: Body weight in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham, but that in GSH-treated showed no change in comparison with control. The level of serum albumin in control group showed significant decrease in comparison with sham. That in GSH-treated was slightly decreased in comparison with control. The level of serum ALP activity in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham, but that in GSH-treated was significantly decreased in comparison with control. The level of serum phosphorous, calcium, GOT, GPT, T3 did not significant change among the three groups. The level of serum estrogen in control group showed slightly decreased in comparison with sham, but that in GSH-treated showed no change in comparison with control. The level of serum T4 in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham, but that in GSH-treated was significantly decreased in comparison with control. Trabecular bone area as well as trabecular thickness in control group showed significant decrease In comparison with sham. Those in GSH-treated showed significant increase in comparison with control. Trabecular number did not significant change among the three groups. Trabecular separation only in GSH-treated showed significant decrease in comparison with control. Osteoclast number in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham. That in GSH-treated showed significant decrease in comparison with control. Oseoblast surface in control group showed significant increase in comparison with sham, but that in GSH-treated showed no change in comparison with control. According to the above these results, GSH has shown to be capable of preventing and curing osteoporosis caused by old-aged and postmenopause.

The Effect of Additional Haptic Supplementation on Postural Control During Squat in Normal Adult (추가적인 햅틱적용이 정상 성인의 스쿼트 동안 자세조절에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study examined the effect on postural control during the stimulation of haptic touch with fingertip on the stable surface at quiet standing posture, squat flexion stage, 60 degrees squat stage and squat extension stage. Methods: The postural sway was measured on the force platform, while 30 subjects were squatting, under three different haptic touch conditions (No Touch [NT], Light Touch [LT], Heavy Touch [HT]), above the touch pad in front of their body midline. Three different haptic touch conditions were divided into 1) NT condition; squatting as right index fingers held above the touch pad, 2) LT condition (<1N); squatting as the touch pad was in contact with right index fingers pulp with a pressure not exceeding 1N and 3) HT condition; squatting as subjects were allowed to use the touch pad for mechanical support by transmitting onto it with as much force, choosing with their index fingers. Results: There was significant decrease in LT, rather than that of NT (p<0.01), and in HT, rather than that of LT (p<0.01), as the results of the distance and velocity of center of pressure (COP) in mediolateral direction at quiet standing position. In anteroposterior direction, the distance and velocity of COP in LT and HT showed significant decrease, when compared to that of the data of NT (p<0.01). There was no significant difference between the 3 conditions (NT, LT, and HT), with respect to the distance and velocity of COP in mediolateral direction, during dynamic balance (squat flexion stage, squat extension stage) (p>0.05). In anteroposterior direction, the results of the distance and velocity of COP in HT showed significant decrease when compared to that of the data of NT (p<0.05). Conclusion: Light touch, during the task, decreased the postural sway at static balance. The results suggest that haptic touch should be applied, appropriately, because it varies the effects according to different conditions.

  • Computational assessment of gas-dynamic characteristics is explored for a three-dimensional counter-flow thrust vector control system in a rectangular supersonic nozzle. This convergent-divergent nozzle is designed by Method of Characteristics and its design Mach number is specially set as 2.5. Performance variations of the counter-flow vector system are illustrated by varying the gap height of the secondary flow duct. Key parameters are quantitatively analyzed, such as static pressure distribution along the centerline of the upper suction collar, deflection angle, secondary mass flow ratio, and resultant thrust coefficient. Additionally, the streamline on the symmetry plane, three-dimensional iso-Mach number surface contour, and three-dimensional turbulent kinetic energy contour are presented to reveal overall flow-field characteristics in detail.

Tool-Setup Monitoring of High Speed Precision Machining Tool

  • Recently the monitoring system of tool setting in high speed precision machining center is required for manufacturing products that have highly complex and small shape, high precision and high function. It is very important to reduce time to setup tool in order to improve the machining precision and the productivity and to protect the breakage of cutting tool as the shape of product is smaller and more complex. Generally, the combination of errors that geometrical clamping error of fixing tool at the spindle of machining tool and the asynchronized error of driving mechanism causes that the run-out of tool reaches to 3$^{\sim}$20 times of the thickness of cutting chip. And also the run-out is occurred by the misalignment between axis of tool shank and axis of spindle and spindle bearing in high speed rotation. Generally, high speed machining is considered when the rotating speed is more than 8,000 rpm. At that time, the life time of tool is reduced to about 50% and the roughness of machining surface is worse as the run-out is increased to 10 micron. The life time of tool could be increased by making monitoring of tool-setup easy, quick and precise in high speed machining tool. This means the consumption of tool is much more reduced. And also it reduces the manufacturing cost and increases the productivity by reducing the tool-setup time of operator. In this study, in order to establish the concept of tool-setup monitoring the measuring method of the geometrical error of tool system is studied when the spindle is stopped. And also the measuring method of run-out, dynamic error of tool system, is studied when the spindle is rotated in 8,000${\sim}$60,000 rpm. The dynamic phenomena of tool-setup are analyzed by implementing the monitoring system of rotating tool system and the non-contact measuring system of micro displacement in high speed.

Dynamic Aeroelastic Characteristics of an All-Movable Canard with Oscillating Flap Used in UAV (플랩이 있는 무인기 전운동 카나드의 동적공탄성 특성)

  • In this study, dynamic aeroelastic analyses of the canard with oscillating flap are conducted considering the effect of aerodynamic compressibility. The canard model considered herein is an all-movable type with a pitching axis on a canard-rotor-wing aircraft which was considered as one of the major UAV candidates under developing in Korea. The equivalent structural model is constructed based on the initial design data by the Korea smart UAV development center. Both the frequency and the time-domain aeroelastic analyses have been applied to practically conduct parametric studies on the effects of equivalent torsional stiffness. In the case of all-movable control surface with oscillating flap, the equivalent rotational stiffness of the pitch axes are important design parameters. The parametric results for the aeroelastic instability are practically presented.

Restoration of the Broken Lumbopelvic-hip Neuromuscular Chain and Coordinated Synergistic Activation in Low Back Pain

  • Background: The presence of the lumbopelvic-hip neuromuscular chain is essential for dynamic spinal stabilization; its therapeutic effects on dynamic movements of the distal extremity segment and underpinning motor mechanism remain unknown and warrant further study on participants with low back pain (LBP). Objects: We aim to compare the effects of the broken chain exercise (BCE) and connected chain exercise (CCE) on electromyography (EMG) amplitude and onset time in participants with and without LBP. Methods: Randomized controlled clinical trial. A convenience sample of 40 nonathletic participants (mean age: 24.78 ± 1.70) with and without LBP participated in this study. All participants underwent CCE for 30 minutes, 30-minute daily. We measured EMG amplitude and onset times on bilateral erector spinae (ES), gluteus maximus (GM), hamstring (HAM), transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) during the prone hip extension (PHE) test before and after the BCE and CCE. We used multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to analyze the amplitude and onset time difference between exercises (BCE and CCE) and Pearson's correlations to determine any synergistic relationship among the HAM, GM, bilateral TrA/IO, and ES muscles. The statistical analyses were used at p < 0.05. Results: MANOVA showed that CCE was more decreased on EMG amplitude in HAM and bilateral ES, while increased GM and contralateral TrA/IO than BCE (p < 0.05). MANOVA EMG onset time data analyses revealed that the main effect of the conditions was significant for all HAM, GM, and bilateral ES muscles, whereas the main effect for the group was significant only for GM and contralateral ES in healthy and LBP groups. Pearson's correlation coefficient was computed to assess the relationship between BCE and CCE on dependent variables. In most of the muscles, there was a strong, positive correlation between the two variables, and there was a significant relationship (p < 0.001). Conclusion: CCE produced more effective and coordinated core stabilization and motor control mechanism in the lumbopelvic-hip muscles in participants with and without LBP during PHE than BCE.

Prediction of Fire Curves Considering the Relationship between Mass Increase and Combustion Time of Combustibles (연소물의 질량증가와 연소시간의 상관관계를 고려한 화재곡선 예측)

  • In this paper, we aimed to convert the fire curve in volume units to a fire curve per unit area for application in the Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) surface heat release rate method. The fire curve was expressed dimensionlessly considering the total combustion characteristic time, and improvements were made to represent the appropriate ratios for the growth , steady, and decay phases concerning the fire intensity. Additionally, a correction function for combustion characteristic time varying with mass increase was derived. Also to control the growth time values according to the increase in mass, a function to correct the growth phase ratio was derived. Consequently, utilizing existing data, a formula was established to determine the reference mass for combustion materials and predict the fire curve based on mass increase.

On complex flutter and buckling analysis of a beam structure subjected to static follower force

  • The flutter and buckling analysis of a beam structure subjected to a static follower force is completely studied in the paper. The beam is fixed in the transverse direction and constrained by a rotational spring at one end, and by a translational spring and a rotational spring at the other end. The co-existence of flutter and buckling in this beam due to the presence of the follower force is an interesting and important phenomenon. The results from this theoretical analysis will be useful for the stability design of structures in engineering applications, such as the potential of flutter control of aircrafts by smart materials. The transition-curve surface for differentiating the two distinct instability regions of the beam is first obtained with respect to the variations of the stiffness of the springs at the two ends. Second, the capacity of the follower force is derived for flutter and buckling of the beam as a function of the stiffness of the springs by observing the variation of the first two frequencies obtained from dynamic analysis of the beam. The research in the paper may be used as a benchmark for the flutter and buckling analysis of beams.

Development of a Micromachined Differential Type Resonant Accelerometer and Its Performance

  • This paper presents the differential type resonant accelerometer (DRXL) and its performance test results. The DRXL is the INS grade, surface micro-machined sensor. The proposed DRXL device produces a differential digital output upon an applied acceleration, and the principle is a gap-dependent electrical stiffness variation of the electrostatic resonator with torsion beam structures. Using this new operating concept, we designed, fabricated and tested the proposed device. The final device was fabricated by using the wafer level vacuum packaging process. To test the performance of the DRXL, a nonlinear self-oscillation loop is designed using describing function technique. The oscillation loop is implemented using discrete electronic elements. The performance test of the DRXL shows that the sensitivity of the accelerometer is 12 Hz/g and its long term bias stability is about $2mg(1{\sigma})$. The turn on repeatability, bandwidth, and dynamic range are 4.38 mg, 100 Hz, and ${\pm}\;70g$, respectively.

  • Long stroke Fast Tool Servo (LFTS) with maximum stroke of $432{\mu}m$ is designed, manufactured and tested for fabrication of optical free-form surfaces. The large amount of stroke in LFTS has been realized by utilizing the hinge and lever mechanisms which enable the displacement amplification ratio of 4.3. In this mechanism the peculiar shape was devised for maximizing the displacement of end tip in LFTS and special mechanical spring has been mounted to provide the sufficient preload to the piezoelectric actuator. Also, its longitudinal motion of tool tip can be measured by capacitive type displacement sensor and closed-loop controlled to overcome the nonlinear hysteresis. In order to verify the static and dynamic characteristics of designed LFTS, several features including step response, frequency response and cut-off frequency in closed-loop mode were experimentally examined. Also, basic machining result shows that the proposed LFTS is capable of generating the optical free-form surface as an additional axis in diamond turning machine.
