A numerical analysis is carried out for the nonlinear phenomena of the bubble oscillator. The model is based on the Keller's formulation for the bubble dynamics. Interpretation of the bubble interior is based on the formulation by Prosperetti. His formulation adopts the energy equation for the analysis of the bubble interior. The numerical simulation Shows typical nonlinear phenomena in its frequency response. Among such nonlinear aspects are the jump phenomenon, the shift of natural frequency of the system, and the appearance of superharmonic resonances. It is deduced that the nonlinear frequency response is dependent upon the initial condition of the bubble oscillator and some multi-valued frequency region can appear in the response curve. Nonlinear phenomena appeared in the bubble oscillator is compared with those of the Duffing equation and it may be said that the bubble dynamic equation has similar nonlinear aspects to the Duffing equation.
The step to obtain a process dynamic model through process experiments is very important because it needs times and expenditures. Step response method is one of the standard methods to have long been used for understanding process dynamics, obtaining dynamical models and designing control systems. For the step response, it is usually required to measure process output for a step input change in the open-loop manner. Its disadvantage criticized is the long open-loop operation. For this, a method based on the time-optimal control technique to minimize the test time for obtaining the step response has been recently presented. However, the method requires iterative computations for the minimization of test times. Here, a method where iterative computations are not required is proposed. Simulation results are presented to show that test times to obtain step responses are reduced considerably and an autotuning method based on the proposed method is compared with the relay feedback autotuning method accepted widely for the autotuning of controllers.
State-of-the-art wireless communication networks allow dynamic relocation of mobile terminals. A location management mechanism is required to keep track of a mobile terminal for delivering incoming calls. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy logic-based selective paging method to reduce paging cost. In the proposed fuzzy logic-based location management method, the location update uses the area-based method that uses direction-based together with movement-based methods, and the location search uses the fuzzy logic-based selective paging method based on the mobility information of mobile terminals. A partial candidate paging area is selected by fuzzy control rules, then the fuzzy logic-based selective paging method pages only the cells within the partial candidate paging area. The performance of proposed fuzzy logic-based location management method is to be evaluated by both an analytical model and a simulation, and is compared with those of LA and BVP methods. From these evaluation results, we know that the proposed fuzzy logic-based location management method provide better performance than other location management methods.

Modeling water flow in variably saturated, porous media is important in many branches of science and engineering. Highly nonlinear relationships between water content and hydraulic conductivity and soil-water pressure result in very steep wetting fronts causing numerical problems. These include poor efficiency when modeling water infiltration into very dry porous media, and numerical oscillation near a steep wetting front. A one-dimensional finite element formulation is developed for the numerical simulation of variably saturated flow systems. First order backward Euler implicit and second order Crank-Nicolson time discretization schemes are adopted as a solution strategy in this formulation based on Picard and Newton iterative techniques. Five examples are used to investigate the numerical performance of two approaches and the different factors are highlighted that can affect their convergence and efficiency. The first test case deals with sharp moisture front that infiltrates into the soil column. It shows the capability of providing a mass-conservative behavior. Saturated conditions are not developed in the second test case. Involving of dry initial condition and steep wetting front are the main numerical complexity of the third test example. Fourth test case is a rapid infiltration of water from the surface, followed by a period of redistribution of the water due to the dynamic boundary condition. The last one-dimensional test case involves flow into a layered soil with variable initial conditions. The numerical results indicate that the Crank-Nicolson scheme is inefficient compared to fully implicit backward Euler scheme for the layered soil problem but offers same accuracy for the other homogeneous soil cases.

The traffic accident is the prerequisite of the traffic accident reconstruction. In this study, the traffic accident (forward collision) and traffic accident reconstruction (inverse collision) simulations are conducted to improve the quality and accuracy of the traffic accident reconstruction. The vehicle and tire models are used to simulate the trajectories for the post-impact motion of the vehicles after collision. The impact dynamic model applicable to the forward and inverse collision simulations is also provided. The accuracy of impact analysis for the vehicular collision depends on the accuracy of the coefficients of restitution and friction. The neural network is used to estimate these coefficients. The forward and inverse collision simulations for the multi-collisions are conducted. The new method fur the accident reconstruction is proposed to calculate the pre-impact velocities of the vehicles without using the trial and error process which requires the repeated calculations of the initial velocities until the forward collision simulation satisfies with the accident evidences. This method estimates the pre-impact velocities of the vehicles by analyzing the trajectories of the vehicles. The vehicle slides on a road surface not only under the skidding during an emergency braking but also under the steering. A vehicle over steering or cornering with excessive speed loses the traction and leaves tile yaw marks on the road surface. The new critical speed formula based on the vehicle dynamics is proposed to analyze the yaw marks and shows smaller errors than ones of the existing critical speed formula.

Energy consumption by large computing systems has become an important research theme not only because the sources of energy are depleting fast but also due to the environmental concern. Computational grid is a huge distributed computing platform for the applications that require high end computing resources and consume enormous energy to facilitate execution of jobs. The organizations which are offering services for high end computation, are more cautious about energy consumption and taking utmost steps for saving energy. Therefore, this paper proposes a scheduling technique for Minimizing Energy consumption using Adapted Genetic Algorithm (MiE-AGA) for dependent tasks in Computational Grid (CG). In MiE-AGA, fitness function formulation for energy consumption has been mathematically formulated. An adapted genetic algorithm has been developed for minimizing energy consumption with appropriate modifications in each components of original genetic algorithm such as representation of chromosome, crossover, mutation and inversion operations. Pseudo code for MiE-AGA and its components has been developed with appropriate examples. MiE-AGA is simulated using Java based programs integrated with GridSim. Analysis of simulation results in terms of energy consumption, makespan and average utilization of resources clearly reveals that MiE-AGA effectively optimizes energy, makespan and average utilization of resources in CG. Comparative analysis of the optimization performance between MiE-AGA and the state-of-the-arts algorithms: EAMM, HEFT, Min-Min and Max-Min shows the effectiveness of the model.

In this study, transonic/supersonic nonlinear flutter analysis system of a complete aircraft including forced harmonic motion pf control surfaces has been effectively developed using the modified transonic small disturbance (TSD) equation. To consider the nonlinear effects, the coupled time marching method (CTM) combining computational structural dynamics (CFD) has been directly applied for aeroelastic computations. The grid system for a complex full aircraft configuration is effectively generated by the developed inhouse code. Intransonic and supersonic flight regimes, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic effect has been investigated for a complete aircraft model. Also, nonlinear flutter flight simulations for the forced harmonic motion of control surfaces are practically presented in detail.
Currently, the dynamic amplification effect of suction is described using the wind vibration coefficient (WVC) of external loads. In other words, it is proposed that the fluctuating characteristics of suction are equivalent to external loads. This is, however, not generally valid. Meanwhile, the effects of the ventilation rate of louver on suction and its WV are considered. To systematically analyze the effects of the ventilation rate of louver on the multi-dimensional WVC of ultra-large cooling towers under suctions, the 210 m ultra-large cooling tower under construction was studied. First, simultaneous rigid pressure measurement wind tunnel tests were executed to obtain the time history of fluctuating wind loads on the external surface and the internal surface of the cooling tower at different ventilation rates (0%, 15%, 30%, and 100%). Based on that, the average values and distributions of fluctuating wind pressures on external and internal surfaces were obtained and compared with each other; a tower/pillar/circular foundation integrated simulation model was developed using the finite element method and complete transient time domain dynamics of external loads and four different suctions of this cooling tower were calculated. Moreover, 1D, 2D, and 3D distributions of WVCs under external loads and suctions at different ventilation rates were obtained and compared with each other. The WVCs of the cooling tower corresponding to four typical response targets (i.e., radial displacement, meridional force, Von Mises stress, and circumferential bending moment) were discussed. Value determination and 2D evaluation of the WVCs of external loads and suctions of this large cooling tower at different ventilation rates were proposed. This study provides references to precise prediction and value determination of WVC of ultra-large cooling towers.

A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor imbedded small wind turbine blade was manufactured to experimentally investigate the feasibility to embed FBG sensors between layers of glass fiber to monitor dynamic strains of the wind turbine blade. The blade which is similar to a commercial 300 W wind turbine blade was manufactured with glass fiber as a reinforcement and epoxy resin as base material. A total of five FBG sensors including one temperature sensor were imbedded in the blade to sense mechanical strain and temperature. While manufacturing the blade, residual strain and temperature that occurred in the small wind turbine blade were monitored using the imbedded FBG sensor array. To examine the sensor performance, an impact test was carried out. The experimental results from the FBG sensors were close to those from electrical strain gages mounted on the blade root surface. The mode shapes of the blade were analyzed also using a commercial Ansys simulation with a model obtained from a three dimensional laser scanning of the blade.
Through this study, a conceptual design for the next generation high-speed EMU has been derived to meet the crash worthiness requirements of the Korean rollingstock safety regulation. The crashworthiness regulations require some performance requirements for two heavy collision accident scenarios; a train-to-train collision at the relative speed of 36 km/h, and a collision against a standard deformable obstacle of 15 ton at 110km/h. The complete train set will be composed of 2TC-6M with 13 ton axle load, which is different from KTX with the power car of 17 ton axle load. Using theoretical and numerical analyses, a crashworthy conceptual design was derived in terms of mean crush forces and energy absorptions for principal crushable structures and devices. The derived conceptual design was evaluated and improved using one dimensional dynamic simulations for the bar-spring-damper-mass model. It is shown from the simulation results that the suggested conceptual design can easily satisfy domestic crashworthiness requirements.
