Structural inertial interaction is a representative the effect of dynamic soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI), which leads to a relative displacement between soil and foundation, period lengthening, and damping increasing phenomena. However, for a system with a significantly heavy foundation, the dynamic inertia of the foundation influences and interacts with the structural seismic response. The structure-to-foundation mass ratio (MR) quantifies the distribution of mass between the structure and foundation for a structure on a shallow foundation. Although both systems exhibit the same vertical factor of safety (FSv), the MR and corresponding seismic responses attributed to the structure and foundation masses may differ. This study explored the influence of MR on the permanent deformation and seismic response of soil-foundation-structure system considering SFSI via numerical simulations. Given that numerous dimensionless parameters of SFSI described its influence on the structural seismic response, the parameters, except for MR and FSv, were fixed for the sensitivity analysis. The results demonstrated that the foundation inertia of heavier foundations induced more settlement due to sliding behavior of heavily-loaded systems. Moreover, the structural inertia of heavier structures evidently exhibited foundation rocking behavior, which results in a more elongated natural period of the structure for lightly-loaded systems.

The NCF control algorithm for an active suspension system was proposed and investigated. The NCF algorithm using spring dynamic variation force and suspension relative velocity was applied to the 1/4 vehicle model and numerical analysis was performed. Vehicle's performances such as vehicle displacement, vehicle acceleration, suspension deflection, tire deflection and absorbed power were calculated and compared with those of the passive, semi-active and LQR active suspension system that use full state feedback. Numerical results show that the proposed NCF active suspension system has superior performance compared with the passive and semi-active suspension system and has very similar performance compared with the LQR active suspension system. So the proposed NCF algorithm is considered as a highly practical algorithm because it requires only one displacement sensor in a 1/4 vehicle model.

In this paper, a dynamic centrifuge model test was conducted on a 24.8-meter-deep excavation consisting of a 20 m sand layer and 4.8 m bedrock, classified as S3 by Korean seismic design code KDS 17 10 00. A braced excavation wall supports the hole. From the results, the mechanism of seismically induced earth pressure was investigated, and their distribution and loading points were analyzed. During earthquake loadings, active seismic earth pressure decreases from the at-rest earth pressure since the backfill laterally expands at the movement of the wall toward the active direction. Yet, the passive seismic earth pressure increases from the at-rest earth pressure since the backfill pushes to the wall and laterally compresses at it, moving toward a passive direction and returning to the initial position. The seismic earth pressure distribution shows a half-diamond distribution in the dense sand and a uniform distribution in loose sand. The loading point of dynamic thrust corresponding with seismic earth pressure is at the center of the soil backfill. The dynamic thrust increased differently depending on the backfill's relative density and input motion type. Still, in general, the dynamic thrust increased rapidly when the maximum horizontal displacement of the wall exceeded 0.05 H%.

One of the objectives to prevent building pounding between two adjacentstructures is to considerseparation distance or decrease relative displacement during seismic excitation. Although the majority of building codes around the world have basically suggested some equations or approximately recommended various distances between structuresto avoid pounding hazard, but a lot of reportsin zone of pounding have obviously shown thatsafety situation or economic consideration are not always provided due to the collisions between buildings and the cost of land, respectively. For this purpose, a dynamic MDOF model by having base isolation system is numerically considered and using various earthquake records, relative displacements are mathematically investigated. Different equations to determine the value of damping ratio are collected and the results of evaluations are listed for comparison among them to present a new equation for determination of impact damping ratio. Presented equation is depends significantly on impact velocity before and after impact based on artificial neural network, which the accuracy of them is investigated and also confirmed. In order to select the optimum equation, hysteresisloop of impact between base of building and rubber bumper is considered and compared with the hysteresis loop of each impact, calculated by different equations. Finally, using representative equation, the effect of thickness, number and stiffness of rubber bumpers are numerically investigated. The results of analysis indicate that stiffness and number of bumpers have significantly affected in zone of impact force while the thickness of bumpers have not shown significant influence to calculate impact force during earthquake. For instance, increasing the number of bumpers, gap size between structures and also the value of stiffness is caused to decrease impact force between models. The final evaluation demonstrates that bumpers are able to decrease peak lateral displacement of top story during impact.
One of the key tools in assessing the seismic vulnerability of the structures is the use of fragile functions, which is the possibility of damage from a particular damage surface for several levels of risk from the seismic movements of the earth. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of two categories of earthquake events on the fragile curve (FRC) of the steel construction system. In this study, the relative lateral displacement of the structures is considered as a damage criterion. The limits set for modifying the relative lateral position in the HAZUS instruction are used to determine the failure modes, which include: slight, moderate, extensive and complete. The results show, as time strong-motion increases, the probability of exceeding (PoE) increases (for Peak ground acceleration (PGA) less than 0.5). The increase in seismic demand increases the probability of exceeding. In other words, it increases the probability of exceeding, if the maximum earthquake acceleration increases. Also, 7-storey model in extensive mode has 20 and 26.5% PoE larger than 5- and 3-storey models, respectively.
Both static pile load test with load transfer measuring system and the pile dynamic load test are performed to estimate the skin friction and behavior characteristics of a large drilled shaft. And the numerical modeling of large drilled shaft is performed by applying the FDM program. Since the magnitude of friction resistance depends on the relative displacement between soil and shaft, load and displacement at the arbitrary depth along the large drilled shaft are estimated to analyze the correlation. According to the measuring results of load transfer, unit skin friction along the large drilled shaft was fully mobilized at gravel layer in the middle of shaft and the frictional resistance transmitted to bedrock was relatively small. Also, even for the same drilled shaft, the results of PDA and static load test are different with each other and the difference is discussed.
This study describes the effect of ground water table on the dynamic analysis of single piles subjected to earthquake loading. The dynamic numerical analysis was performed for different dry and saturated soils with varying the relative densities of surrounding weathered soils (SM). The test soil was a weathered soil encountered in the engineering field and bender element tests were conducted to estimate the dynamic properties of test soil. The Mohr-Coulomb model and Finn model were used for soil, dry and saturated conditions, respectively. These models validated with results of centrifuge tests. When compared with the results from the soil conditions, saturated cases showed more lateral displacement and bending moment of piles than dry cases, and this difference caused from the generation of excess porewater pressure. It means that the kinematic effect of the soil decreased as the excess pore water pressure was generated, and it was changed to the inertial behavior of the pile.

In this study, three types of combined isolator consisting of High Damping Rubber Bearing (HDRB) and wire isolator were developed for Uninterruptible Power Supply system (UPS). The dynamic characteristics of the combined isolator were investigated through one-axis shaking table test. The input acceleration were generated in accordance with ICC-ES AC156 code. Scale factors of the input acceleration were designed to be 0.5-2 times the required response spectrum defined in ICC-ES AC156. Based on the test results, damage and dynamic characteristics of the UPS were investigated: including natural frequency, damping ratio, acceleration time history response, dynamic amplification factor and relative displacement. Based on that, it was found that the combined isolator developed in this study could improve the seismic behavior of the UPS, in particular, the response acceleration.
As one type of power quality (PQ) disturbance sources, high-speed rail (HSR) can have major impacts on the power supply grid. Providing timely and accurate warning information for PQ problems of HSR is important for the safe and stable operation of traction power supply systems and the power supply grid. This study proposes a novel warning approach to identify PQ problems and provide warning prompts based on the monitored data of HSR. To embody the displacement and status change of monitored data, multi-features of different sliding windows are computed. To reflect the relative importance degree of these features in the overall evaluation, an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used to analyse the weights of multi-features. Finally, a multi-features similarity algorithm is applied to analyse the difference between monitored data and the reference data of HSR, and PQ warning results based on dynamic thresholds can be analysed to quantify its severity. Cases studies demonstrate that the proposed approach is effective and feasible, and it has now been applied to an actual PQ monitoring platform.

Structures with additional frictional damping system have strong nonlinearity that the dynamic behavior is highly affected. by the relative magnitude between frictional force and excitation load. In this study, normalized response spectra of the structures with non-dimensional friction force are obtained through nonlinear time history analyses of the mass-normalized single degree of freedom systems using 20 ground motion data recorded on rock site. The variation of the control performance of frictional damping system is investigated in terms of the dynamic load and the structural natural period, of which effects were not considered in the previous studies. Least square curve fitting equations are presented for describing those normalized response spectrum and optimal non-dimensional friction forces are obtained for controlling the peak displacement and absolute acceleration of the structure based on the derivative of the curve fitted design spectrum.
