Obelisks are historical monuments. There are several obelisks dating from ancient Egyptian period, located around various parts of the world. The city of Istanbul is a home to the Obelisk of Theodosius at the Hippodrome. Due to the expectation of a large event in the near future, the evaluation of seismic response of the Obelisk gets importance. Therefore, in this study structural dynamic behavior of the Obelisk was investigated using discrete element approach. Nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed using real and synthetic time series. Real and synthetic ground motions analyzed from this study seems consistent with the earthquake hazard levels that would be expected at the site of the Obelisk in the occurrence of an event of moment magnitude above 7.0 near Istanbul. Results are evaluated in terms of variation of displacement, relative displacement of adjacent blocks, normal stress and shear stress in time.
A functional suspension model is proposed as a kinematic describing function of the suspension, that represents the relative wheel displacement in polynomial form in terms of the vertical displacement of the wheel center and steering rack displacement. The relative velocity and acceleration of the wheel is represented in terms of first and second derivatives of the kinematic describing function. The system equations of motion for the full vehicle dynamic model are systematically derived by using velocity transformation method of multi-body dynamics. The comparison of test and simulation results demonstrates the validity of the proposed functional suspension modeling method. The model is computationally very efficient to achieve real-time simulation on TMS 320C6711 150 MHz DSP board of HILS (hardware-in-the-loop simulation) system for ECU (electronic control unit) evaluation of semi-active suspension.

A functional suspension model is proposed as a kinematic describing function of the suspension that represents the relative wheel displacement in polynomial form in terms of the vertical displacement of the wheel center and steering rack displacement. The relative velocity and acceleration of the wheel is represented in terms of first and second derivatives of the kinematic describing function. The system equations of motion for the full vehicle dynamic model are systematically derived by using velocity transformation method of multi-body dynamics. The comparison of field test results and simulation results of the ADAMS/Car demonstrates the validity of the proposed functional suspension modeling method. This model is suitable for real-time vehicle dynamics analysis.
This study presents a steel container crane movement analysis and assessment based on structural health monitoring (SHM). The accelerometers are used to monitor the dynamic crane behavior and a 3-D finite element model (FEM) was designed to express the static displacement of the crane under the different load cases. The multi-input single-output nonlinear autoregressive neural network with external input (NNARX) model is used to identify the crane dynamic displacements. The FEM analysis and the identification model are used to investigate the safety and the vibration state of the crane in both time and frequency domains. Moreover, the SHM system is used based on the FEM analysis to assess the crane behavior. The analysis results indicate that: (1) the mean relative dynamic displacement can reveal the relative static movement of structures under environmental load; (2) the environmental load conditions clearly affect the crane deformations in different load cases; (3) the crane deformations are shown within the safe limits under different loads.
To gain insight into the wind-induced safety concerns associated with attached tower cranes during the construction of super-tall buildings, a 606 m level frame-core tube super-tall building is selected to investigate the wind-induced vibration response and fragility of an outer-attached tower crane at all stages of construction. The wind velocity time history samples are artificially generated and used to perform dynamic response analyses of the crane to observe the effects of wind velocity and wind direction under its working and non-working resting state. The adverse effects of the relative displacement response at different connection supports are also identified. The wind-resistant fragility curves of the crane are obtained by introducing the concept of incremental dynamic analysis. The results from the investigation indicate that a large relative displacement between the supports can substantially amplify the response of the crane at high levels. Such an effect becomes more serious when the lifting arm is perpendicular to the plane of the connection supports. The flexibility of super-tall buildings should be considered in the design of outer-attached tower cranes, especially for anchorage systems. Fragility analysis can be used to specify the maximum appropriate height of the tower crane for each performance level.

Since the engine and reduction gear in a naval vessel are usually supported by the mounting system separately, the misalignment between the input shaft of the reduction gear and the output shaft of the engine should occur caused by ship motion. In this study, this misalignment is estimated from the linear static analysis assuming that the phase of movements of the engine and reduction gear at low frequency range is same and the dynamic effect is not affect to them. Through comparing the relative displacement of the engine and reduction gear calculated from linear static analysis to that from dynamic analysis as well as experiment, the assumption in this study could be verified.
The dynamic crack growth in ductile steel is investigated by means of the impact loaded 3 point bending (3PB) specimens. Results from experiments and numerical simulations are compared to each other. A modified 3PB specimen designed with the reduced width at its ends has been developed in order to avoid the initial compressive loading of the crack tip and also to avoid the uncertain boundary conditions at the impact heads. Numerical simulations of the experiments are made by using a finite element method (FEM) code, ABAQUS. The high speed photography is used to obtain the crack growth and the data of the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD). The direct measurements of the relative rotations of two specimen halves are made by using the Moire interference pattern.
Static and dynamic penetration tests of reinforced concrete (RC) slab specimens are described and discussed. The experimental study was aimed at a better understanding of mechanisms that are involved in dynamic penetration, through their identification in static tests, and by establishing their relative influence in similar dynamic cases. The RC specimens were $80{\times}80-cm$ square plates, and they were made of 30 MPa concrete. The non-deforming steel penetrator was a 50-mm diameter steel rod with a conical nose of 1.5 aspect ratio. Impact penetration tests were carried out with an air gun, which launched the projectiles at velocities of up to 300 m/sec. The static tests were conducted using a closed loop displacement control actuator, where the penetrator was pushed at a constant rate of displacement into the specimen. The static tests reveal important mechanisms that govern the penetration process and therefore contribute to a better understanding of RC barriers resistance to non-deforming projectiles impact.
This study investigates a new optimal placement method for viscous dampers between structures in order to prevent pounding of adjacent structures with different dynamic characteristics under earthquake effects. A relative displacement spectrum is developed in two single degree of freedom system to reveal the critical period ratios for the most risky scenario of collision using El Centro earthquake record (NS). Three different types of viscous damper design, which are classical, stair and X-diagonal model, are considered to prevent pounding on two adjacent building models. The objective function is minimized under the upper and lower limits of the damping coefficient of the damper and a target modal damping ratio. A new algorithm including time history analyses and numerical optimization methods is proposed to find the optimal dampers placement. The proposed design method is tested on two 12-storey adjacent building models. The effects of the type of damper placement on structural models, the critical period ratios of adjacent structures, the permissible relative displacement limit, the mode behavior and the upper limit of damper are investigated in detail. The results of the analyzes show that the proposed method can be used as an effective means of finding the optimum amount and location of the dampers and eliminating the risk of pounding.
In this paper, the equations of motion are constructed systematically for multibody systems containing closed kinematic loops. For the displacement analysis of the closed loops, we introduce a new mixed coordinates by adding to the reference coordinates, relative coordinates corresponding to the degrees of freedom of the system. The mixed coordinates makes easy derive the explicit closed form solution. The explicit functional relationship expressed in closed form is of great advantages in system dimension reduction and no need of an iterative scheme for the displacement analysis. This forms of equation are built up in the general purpose computer program for the kinematic and dynamic analysis of multiboty systems.
