Laboratory model blast and in-situ rock blast tests were conducted to determine blast-induced stress wave propagation characteristics under different explosive types, different loading conditions and different mediums. Dynamic numerical approaches were conducted under the same conditions as experimental tests. Stress magnitudes at mid-point between two blast holes which were detonated simultaneously increased up to two times those of single hole detonation. The rise time of maximum stress in a decoupled charge condition was delayed two times that of a fully charged condition. Dynamic numerical analysis showed almost similar results to blast test results, which verifies the effectiveness of numerical approaches fur optimizing the tunnel blast design. Dynamic numerical analysis was executed to evaluate rock behavior and damage of the contour hole, the sloping hole adjacent to the contour hole in the road tunnel blasting pattern. The rock damage zone of the sloping hole from the numerical analysis was larger than that of the contour hole. Damage in the sloping hole can be reduced by using lower density explosive, by applying decoupled charge, or by increasing distance between the sloping hole and the contour hole.
In modal analysis, the mode shape reflects the vibration characteristics of the structure, and thus it is widely performed for finite element model updating and structural health monitoring. Generally, the acceleration-based mode shape is suitable to express the characteristics of structures for the translational vibration; however, it is difficult to represent the rotational mode at boundary conditions. A tilt sensor and gyroscope capable of measuring rotational mode are used to analyze the overall behavior of the structure, but extracting its mode shape is the major challenge under the small vibration always. Herein, we conducted a feasibility study on a multi-mode shape estimating approach utilizing a single physical quantity signal. The basic concept of the proposed method is to receive multi-metric dynamic responses from two sensors and obtain mode shapes through bridge loading test with relatively large deformation. In addition, the linear transformation matrix for estimating two mode shapes is derived, and the mode shape based on the gyro sensor data is obtained by acceleration response using ambient vibration. Because the structure's behavior with respect to translational and rotational mode can be confirmed, the proposed method can obtain the total response of the structure considering boundary conditions. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method, we pre-measured dynamic data acquired from five accelerometers and five gyro sensors in a lab-scale test considering bridge structures, and obtained a linear transformation matrix for estimating the multi-mode shapes. In addition, the mode shapes for two physical quantities could be extracted by using only the acceleration data. Finally, the mode shapes estimated by the proposed method were compared with the mode shapes obtained from the two sensors. This study confirmed the applicability of the multi-mode shape estimation approach for accurate damage assessment using multi-dimensional mode shapes of bridge structures, and can be used to evaluate the behavior of structures under ambient vibration.

This study dealt with developing a new approach for finding properties which might represent rut resistance characteristics of asphalt mixture under static loading. Two aggregates, a normal asphalt (pen 60-80) and 5 polymer-modified asphalts were used in preparation of 12 dense-graded mixtures. Marshall mix design was used in determination of OAC and each mixture at the OAC was prepared for a newly-developed Kim test on Marshall specimen (S=10cm) and gyratory specimen (S=15cm), and for wheel tracking test. Kim test used Marshall loading frame and specimens were conditioned for 30min at $60^{\circ}C$ before loading through Kim tester an apparatus consisting of a loading column and a specimen and column holder Diameter (D) of column was 3cm and 4cm with each column having different radius (r) of round cut at the bottom. The static load was applied at 50mm/min in axial direction of the specimen, not in diametral direction. The maximum load ($P_{max}$) and vertical deformation (y) at $P_{max}$ point were obtained from the test. A strength value was calculated based on the $P_{max}$ r, D and y by using the equation $K_D = 4P_{max}/{\pi}(D-2(r-\sqrt{2ry-y^2}))^2$ and is defined as the deformation strength ($kgf/cm^2$). The values of $P_{max}$/y and $K_I=K_D/y$ were also calculated. In general the leading column diameter and radius of round cut were significant factors affecting $K_D$ and $P_{max}$ values while specimen diameter was not. The statistical analyses showed the $K_D$ had the best correlation with rut depth and dynamic stability. The next best correlation was found from $P_{max}$ which was followed by $P_{max}$/y and $K_I$ in order.

The mechanical fastening has some advantages in respect of the fastening strength and disassemble of the fastened parts. However, at the same time it has some dangerous factors, can cause fatigue crack initiation and propagation due to not only the static loading such as cargo and passengers but also the dynamic loading like vibrations which occur in the engines and the propellers. For this reason, the strength evaluation for the mechanical fastenings along with the sophisticated and detailed mechanical design and the safety evaluation should be executed, In this paper, we were carried out experiments to study fatigue crack growth paths in structures containing the multiple circular holes. It was investigated that how circular holes are affected on fatigue crack growth paths using the specimen consists of A5052-H112, which is widely used as the ship materials. It was found from the experimental results that the fatigue crack as if it is drawn to circular holes when crack tip approach to circular holes. However, it did not go into circular hole if there is the next circular hole. Therefore, the clarification of mechanism on the fatigue crack initiation and the propagation in structures containing the multiple circular holes can be expected in this study.
The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is a numerical technique used in dynamic analysis to simulate the fluid-like behavior of materials under extreme conditions, such as those encountered in explosions or high velocity impacts. In SPH, fluid or solid materials are discretized into particles. These particles interact with each other based on certain smoothing kernels, allowing the simulation of fluid flows and predict the response of solid materials to shock waves, like deformation, cracking or failure. One of the main advantages of SPH is its ability to simulate these phenomena without a fixed grid, making it particularly suitable for analyzing complex geometries. In this study, the structural damage to a masonry arch bridge subjected to blast loading was investigated. A high-fidelity micro-model was created and the explosives were modeled using the SPH approach. The Johnson-Holmquist II damage model and the Mohr-Coulomb material model were considered to evaluate the masonry and backfill properties. Consistent with the principles of the JH-II model, the authors developed a VUMAT code. The explosive charges (50 kg, 168 kg, 425 kg and 1000 kg) were placed in close proximity to the deck and pier of a bridge. The results showed that the 50 kg charges, which could have been placed near the pier by a terrorist, had only a limited effect on the piers. Instead, this charge caused a vertical displacement of the deck due to the confinement effect. Conversely, a 1000 kg TNT charge placed 100 cm above the deck caused significant damage to the bridge.

The present work has been developed the interpretation processor including the behavior of material failure and the separation phenomena under transient dynamic loading (the operation of explosive bolt) using AUTODYN V4.3, SoildWork 2003 and TrueGrid V2.1 programs. It has been demonstrated that the interpretation in ridge-cut explosive bolt under dynamic loading condition should be necessary to the appropriate failure model and the basic stress of bolt failure is the principal stress. The use of this interpretation processor developing the present work could be extensively helped to design the shape and the amount of explosives in the explosive bolt having a complex geometry. It is also proved that the interpretation processor approach is an accurate and effective analysis technique to evaluate the separation mechanism in explosive bolts.
The School Bus Routing Problem(SBRP) seeks to plan an efficient schedule of a fleet of school buses that must pick up student from various bus stops and deliver them by satisfying various constraints; maximum capacity of the bus, maximum riding time of students, arrival time between a school's time window. By extending the existing SBRP, we consider a case study of SBRP with allowance of mixed-loading and dynamic arrivals reflecting the school bus operation of university in Korea. Our solution procedure is based on constructing the initial solution using sweep algorithm and then improving solution within the framework of the evolutionary approach known as efficient meta-heuristics. By comparing the various scenarios through the constraints relaxation for reflecting the real operational strategies, we assess the merit of our proposed procedure.
To overcome the limitations of current evaluation procedures for floor vibration under crowd loading, two kinds of uncertainties associated with individual time lag differences and the complex behavior of crowd should be taken into account. The complex behavior of crowds has yet to be fully described, even though individual differences can be dealt with statistically. This paper proposes time lag considered (TLC) crowd model based on a probabilistic approach. The load reduction factor, which reflects the effect of a general degree of synchronization among crowd, is proposed. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to determine various crowd behaviors by using the TLC crowd model proposed. The TLC crowd model can rationally treat the energy loss of various crowd patterns. This indicates that it may be used as a theoretical basis in refining dynamic load factor of crowd loading.

Offshore structure may be considerably vulnerable to fatigue failure while initial flaw propagates under cyclic loading, so crack propagation analysis/fracture/yield assessments about initial flaw detected by NDT are necessarily required. In this paper, case studies have been conducted by flaw assessment program using engineering criticality analysis (ECA) approach. Variables such as flaw geometry, flaw size, structure geometry, dynamic stress, static stress, toughness, crack growth rate, stress concentration factor (SCF) affected by weld are considered as analysis conditions. As a result, the safety of structure was examined during fatigue loading life. Also, critical initial flaw size was calculated by sensitivity module in the developed program. The flaw assessments analysis using ECA approach can be very useful in offshore industries owing to the increasing demand on the engineering criticality analysis of potential initial flaws.
Seismic ground response analysis is one of the most important issues in geotechnical earthquake engineering. Conventional seismic site response and free field analysis of layered soils does not consider the effect of surcharge mass which may be present on the top layer. Surcharge mass may develop extra inertial force to the soil and, hence, significantly affect on the results of seismic ground response analysis. Methods of analysis of ground response may also be categorized into time domain and frequency domain concepts. Simplicity in developing analytical relations and accuracy in considering soil dynamic properties dependency to loading frequency are benefits of frequency domain analysis. In this part of the paper, seismic ground response is analyzed using transfer function method for soil layers considering surcharge mass on the top layer. Equation of motion, wave equation, is solved using amended boundary conditions which effectively take the impact of surcharge mass into account. A computer program is developed by MATLAB software based on the solution method developed for wave equation. Layered soils subjected to earthquake loading were numerically studied and solved especially by the computer program developed in this research. Results obtained were compared with those given by DEEP SOIL computer program. Such comparison showed the accuracy of the program developed in this study. Also in this part, the effects of geometrical and mechanical properties of soil layers and especially the impact of surcharge mass on transfer function are investigated using the current approach and the program developed. The efficiency and accuracy of the method developed here is shown through some worked examples and through comparison of the results obtained here with those given by other approaches. Discussions on the results obtained are presented throughout in this part.
