Objective: This study investigates user performance and user perceptions of dynamic Chinese text displays (Leading display and RSVP display) when users search for target information. Background: Today, information searching with dynamic displays is widely used in TV programs, on Internet advertisements, for traffic information systems, and more. Method: A human factors experiment was conducted to compare both displays. Eighteen subjects participated in evaluating two simulated interfaces for the leading display and the RSVP display. Results: The results show that the leading display was better in terms of search time and certain subjective measurements (Easiness, frustration, anxiety). The latter results are consistent with the conclusions of other research efforts showing that dynamic displays are more effective and efficient when reading information. Conclusion: The leading display is more useful for Chinese users in terms of both information searching and information reading. Application: This study helps design dynamic displays written in Chinese texts.
A sub-field rearrangement driving method has been proposed to reduce a DFC (Dynamic False Contour) phenomenon in plasma display panels. The proposed driving method expresses 256 gray levels with 16 sub-fields, while conventional one uses only 8 sub-fields. Notwithstanding the increase in the number of sub-fields, the display time is similar to the conventional 8 sub-fields driving method by appropriate choosing selective writing and selective erasing for sub-fields.
PDP(plasma display panel) represents the gray levels by the pulse number modulation technique that results in undesirable dynamic false contours on moving images. This paper proposes a LUT(Look-up table) based error diffusion algorithm for reduction of the dynamic false contours. A quantitative measure of the dynamic false contours is defined first. The measure of the dynamic false contours is calculated through simulation of every gray level combination of two consecutive frames. Based on the calculated measures, a modified gray level for a pair of gray levels of two consecutive frames is chosen to reduce the dynamic false contours. The chosen gray levels serve as contents of a gray level conversion LUT. Given a pair of gray levels of two consecutive frames, the gray level of current frame is modified based on the gray level conversion LUT. The new gray level is displayed on PDP. An error diffusion algorithm is, then, applied to compensate for the differences in the gray levels.

Dynamic visual acuity is used as an important factor to measure athletic performance in sports field. A study on visual acuity testing system using non-see head mounted display (NST-HMD) was conducted recently. However, the NST-HMD has a problem that the sense of space felt by the subject differs from the actual environment. This is because the view is blocked so that it is only implemented in a virtual space. This paper proposes a dynamic visual acuity testing system using optical see through head mounted display (OST-HMD). To do this, OST-HMD and NST-HMD comparative tests were conducted using existing K-D (King-Devick) charts. Experiments were performed on 30 subjects and their visual acuity was measured and analyzed by parametric statistics and one-sample T-test. The results of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed OST-HMD. This study is expected to use the visual inspection and training equipment of OST-HMD.

The safety and reliability of nuclear power plant operations relies heavily on the plant operators ability to respond to various emergency situations. It has become standard industry practice to utilize simulators to improve the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants operations. The simulators built for Younggwang#3,4, which is the basic model of the Korean Nuclear Power Plant design, has been developed precisely for this purpose. Dynamic Model and Display Model are developed under US3(UNIX Simulation Software Support System) environment in simulator for Younggwang#3,4. Since these two models are developed under each own operating system, it is necessary to develop a method for transporting data between these two systems. This paper descirves communication environment between Dynamic Model and Display Model, and addresses a file generation method for the Display Model, which will be necessary for designing MMI of MCR(Main Control Room) in the furture.
In this paper, we propose a new metric called "dynamic gamma" to quantitatively evaluate the dynamic temporal response of an LC display device. The widely-used response time and corresponding 3-D bar graphs cannot fully describe the dynamic characteristics of an LC panel [1], and using response time to compare different LC panels and assessing the dynamic features of LC panels is difficult. On the other hand, the new metric MPRT mixes an LC panel's slow temporal response with its hold-type display effect. The proposed new metric, dynamic gamma, and corresponding 2-D plots, are arguably more suitable for quantitatively characterizing the dynamic characteristics of an LC panel, so comparing two LC panels becomes easy. Furthermore, dynamic gamma has the unique property that it can be used to quantify the limitations/capabilities and to assess the effectiveness of an overdrive mechanism for a particular LCD. In the paper, two LC panels using different technology are analyzed and compared using this new metric.
For reducing DFC(Dynamic False Contour), we propose a new PDP driving method by rearrangement of sub-fields. The proposed method constructs a frame using 16 sub-fields for expressing 256 gray levels. Although the number of sub-fields increases, the display time increases compared to the conventional 8 sub-fields driving method. This increase in display time is achieved by properly using both selective writing and selective erasing for each sub-field.
High dynamic range (HDR) technology has been drawing attention in the field of imaging and consumer entertainment. As tools for capturing and creating HDR contents, encoding, and transmission evolve to support HDR formats, various display capabilities are being developed and increased. Hence, there is need for remapping native HDR imagery for display on lower quality legacy standard dynamic range (SDR) displays. This operation is referred to as tone mapping. In this paper, we present a sectional tone mapping method by Lenzen, and expand upon a tone mapping approach to improve temporal stability while maintaining picture quality. Compared to the existing block-based sectional tone mapping, our method uses the edge awareness-based tone mapping. We estimate the performance of the objective metric on temporal flickering. The experimental result shows that the algorithm maintains a smoother relationship between the output luminance values, and this reveals success in reducing halos and improving temporal stability with adopted edge aware filtering.
Tone mapping operator is designed to reproduce visibility of real-world scenes such as HDR images on limited dynamic range display devices. This paper presents and implements compare and to estimate some tone mapping algorithms commonly used. The evaluation is performed by applying tone mapping operators on 7 HDR images, and by presenting the results with subjective estimation. Reinhard tone mapping algorithm is the best in the visual experimental results. The goal of this work is to discuss what is visible of high dynamic range on a normal display device and to determine to which better algorithm is. This work motivates us to make more progress through the new proposal of tone mapping operator on future work.

This paper presents a dynamic association and natural interaction method for multi-displays composed of smart devices. Users can intuitively associate relations among smart devices by shake gestures, flexibly modify the layout of the display by tilt gestures, and naturally interact with the multi-display by multi-touch interactions. First of all, users shake their smart devices to create and bind a group for a multi-display with a matrix configuration in an ad-hoc and collaborative situation. After the creation of the group, if needed, their display layout can be flexibly changed by tilt gestures that move the tilted device to the nearest vacant cell in the matrix configuration. During the tilt gestures, the system automatically modifies the relation, view, and configuration of the multi-display. Finally, users can interact with the multi-display through multi-touch interactions just as they interact with a single large display. Furthermore, depending on the context or role, synchronous or asynchronous mode is available to them for providing a split view or another UI. We will show the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed approach by demonstrating implementation results and evaluating the method by the usability study.
