  • This paper presents dynamic responses of disk flutter and bump in HDD slider. The slider is modeled for three degree-of-freedom systems, which are capable of lifting, pitching, and rolling motions. In numerical analysis, loads from air pressure, preload and static moments from the slider, and stiffness and damping coefficients of the suspension are considered for investigating the dynamic characteristics analysis. The numerical results are presented as functions of typical parameters such as a disk velocity, stiffness and damping coefficients of the suspension, and skew angle.

  • An accurate finite element (FE) model of a structure is essential for predicting reliably its dynamic characteristics. Such a model is used to predict the effects of structural modifications for dynamic design of the structure. These modifications may be imposed by design alterations for operating reasons. Most of the model updating techniques neglect damping and so these updated models can't be used for accurate prediction of vibration amplitudes. This paper deals with the basic formulation of damped finite element model updating method and its use for structural dynamic modifications. In this damped damped finite element model updating method, damping matrices are updated along with mass and stiffness matrices. The damping matrices are updated by updating the damping coefficients. A case involving actual measured data for the case of F-shaped test structure, which resembles the skeleton of a drilling machine is used to evaluate the effectiveness of damped FE model updating method for accurate prediction of the vibration levels and thus its use for structural dynamic modifications. It can be concluded from the study that damped updated FE model updating can be used for structural dynamic modifications with confidence.

  • In this paper. the dynamic characteristics of a super high-speed tilting-pad air bearing(TPGB) used in a turbo expander with high expansion ratio are analyzed. The dynamic behavior and stability of a rotary system supported by two journal air bearings are investigated numerically. The transient response of the shaft is obtained by simultaneously solving the equation of motion of the shaft and the dynamic Reynolds equation. The stiffness and damping coefficients of the bearing are calculated from the loading coefficients of the bearing are calculated from the loading capacity. shaft velocity and displacement by using a curve fitting method. The natural frequencies of the 1st and 2nd rigid modes can be calculated from these coefficients. The theoretical method of a rigid rotor system is verified by experimentsut.

  • Hydropneumatic suspension unit is an important part of tracked vehicles to absorb external impact load exerted from the non-paved road and the cannon discharge. Its absorption performance is strongly influenced by both damping and spring forces of the unit. In this paper, we numerically analyze the damping characteristics of the in-arm-type hydropneumatic suspension unit (ISU) by considering four distinct dynamic modes of the ISU damper: jounce-loading, jounce-unloading, rebound-loading and rebound-unloading. The flow rate coefficients determining the oil flow rate through the damper orifice are decided with the help of independent experiments. The wheel reaction force, the flow rate at cracking and the damping energy are parametrically investigated with respect to the orifice diameter and the wheel motion frequency.

  • In this paper the linearzed stiffness and damping coefficients of tilting pad thrust bearing are calculated by the perturbation method. The coefficients are obtained for a wide range of pivot positions. The effects of exciting frequency and pad mass on stiffness and damping coefficients are investigated. Critical frequencies due to the tilting motions of the pad are presented and are shown to be strongly influenced by the pivot position and pad mass.

  • In this study, nonlinear vibration analysis of the cylindrical orthotropic porous thin plate under V-shaped tension distribution with wire impact damping is considered. We make dynamic model of the plate under the tension using commercial FEM code and reduce the number of its degrees of freedom using dynamic condensation. The dynamic model of wire is obtained as lumped mass model from string equation. And then we analyze the nonlinear vibration of the plate including the impact phenomenon between the plate and the wire using the reduced mass and stiffness matrices of the plate and lumped model of the wire. The contact phenomenon between them can be described by impact contact elements composed of contact stiffness coefficients from Hertzian contact theory and contact damping coefficients from restitution coefficient between them. And we discussed the results of nonlinear vibration analysis for variations of their design parameters.

  • This paper describes that the leaf spring damper (LSD) developed by authors can be controled by side clearance between side covers and leaf springs. The test rig and two prototype dampers with different side clearance were manufactured. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of side clearance on the damping of the leaf spring damper. The stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained from the displacements and the reaction forces generated by rotating the eccentric shaft. All dynamic coefficients are plotted with the excitation frequency which is adjusted by rotating speed of the shaft.

  • In spite of a large amount of previous research, detail study on modified mass in proportional damping system is not well understood. It is common to predict structural dynamic design parameters due to the change of mass, but to predict the amount of modified mass and the location where the mass is being modified are rarely found in previous literature. Such inverse problem required detail analytical study in order to understand structural modification in proportional damping system. This paper predicts the modified mass and the modified mass location in proportional damping system using sensitivity coefficients and iterative method. The sensitivity coefficients are obtained from the change of eigenvectors due to mass modification. This method is applied to a horizontal beam and three degree of freedoms system. To validate the predicted changing mass and its location, the obtained results are compared to the reanalysis result which shows good agreement.

  • A steady prediction method is presented to compute dynamic damping coefficients for axisymmetric projectiles. Viscous flow analysis is essential to the steady method using a zero-spin coning motion in the inertial coordinate frame. The present method is applied to compute the pitching moment and the pitch-damping moment coefficients for the Army-Navy Spinning Rocket. The results are in good agreement with the parabolized Navier-Stokes data, range data, and unsteady prediction data. Predictions for Secant-Ogive-Cylinder configurations are performed to investigate effects of afterbody geometries. To investigate the geometrical effect and flow physics, the longitudinal developments of the coefficients are examined in detail.
